Vulnerable refugees from West Africa often arrive in the country with no money and no papers.

Migrants from West Africa are being openly traded in "public slave markets" across Libya.

As a departure point for refugees trying to get to Europe, migrants arriving in Libya from sub-Saharan Africa are particularly vulnerable due to a lack of money and little in the way of documentation.

Survivors have told the International Organization for Migration (IOM) how there are slave markets and private prisons all over Libya.

Mohammed Abdiker, IOM's head of operation and emergencies, told The Guardian: "The situation is dire. The more IOM engages inside Libya, the more we learn that it is a vale of tears for all too many migrants."

One survivor from Senegal spoke of how he was brought by smugglers across Niger in a bus to the southern Libyan city of Sabha, where he was due to risk a boat trip to Europe. When the middleman did not get his fee, the survivor was put up for sale along with other passengers.

He was taken to a prison where he worked without pay while the captors demanded 300,000 West African francs (about £380) before selling him on to a larger jail. Livia Manante, an IOM officer based in Niger, told The Guardian how migrants would be brought to a square where they were put up for sale.

A migrant prays on the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) after being rescued off the coast of Libya, in June 2016. The International Organisation for Migration says migrants from are being sold openly as slaves in Libya.Reuters

"IOM Italy has confirmed that this story is similar to many stories reported by migrants and collected at landing points in southern Italy, including the slave market reports."

Those who did not get their ransom paid were often taken away and killed while others would die of hunger and disease in unsanitary conditions.

"If the number of migrants goes down, because of death or someone is ransomed, the kidnappers just go to the market and buy one," Manente said.

IOM has helped repatriate 1,500 people back to West Africa so far this year where it is trying to inform people not to risk the journey to Libya where they face exploitation.

"Too often they are broken, brutalised and have been abused. Their voices carry more weight than anyone else's," IOM spokesman Leonard Doyle told the newspaper. (1 image)

Shitty 'cultures' are shitty. Keep them confined to shitty countries.
They've had hundreds of years to observe and learn how civilization is done, yet they still don't have a clue. Fine; screw 'em.
Yeah, it's harsh. Would you rather infest and infect normal Western countries with this 'culture'?

Until 150 years ago there was slavery in USA.

Who infected whom?

It doesn't matter what happened 150 years ago. Or 100 years ago. We are living in the here and now. I certainly acknowledge the challenging economic conditions that the overhang of slavery and segregation (in particular) wrought on American blacks.

But what that realization accounts for in terms of actual policy prescriptions is my belief in a high standard of public education across the US, and a high standard of law enforcement, the enforcement of NECESSARY laws for the social order, but the striking down of unnecessary and intrusive laws (such as the laws against pot use).

I recognize that history has an overhang. But the reason I want to treat people well in the present is not because any sense of debt or guilt - I have none. It is because of a Catholic sense of the equality of man before God, and the need to care for all of our Christian brothers and sisters.

I think that the best way to take care of people is through strong educational and social structures paid for by a strong economy.

Where, then, do African and Middle Eastern refugees fit into this? They don't fit into it much at all. I did not cause the problems that exist in the Muslim world. Islam did. I am willing to bring in CHRISTIAN refugees from these hell holes, but I am not willing to admit Muslim refugees. The REASON those lands are all hell holes is BECAUSE OF Islam. Islam is the evil that destroys everything. I am not willing to import the disease. I AM willing to bring all of the Christians OUT of those hell holes to better places where they can contribute to the advance of Christian civilization. Islam needs to be dealt with in its own homelands.

Very convenient way to avoid responsibility. Yes I kiled a man two years ago, but we are living in the here and now.

Yes I killed a man two years ago

The difference of course is that two years ago I myself did it, and I am conscious of my guilt.

But what happened 100 or 150 years ago I did NOT do, and I am only willing to accept some responsibility to the degree I think is reasonable - and I get to decide that. Those who would impose on me by pressing my guilt upon me are bound to be disappointed, because I have no sense of guilt at all for what people did a century ago. I know I am not guilty of it in fact, or before God. My institution - the US government - did something at some time. So there's a DEGREE of responsibility I am willing to bear, in the here and now, to try to address what was done then, but only a degree of it. And that degree is not enough to, say, derail current policiy, or the economy, or really, anything. If I "make amends" for the actions of past generations, it is an act of PURE charity. I am not actually guilty of anything they did, not before God, not in my own conscience, and not under the laws of men.

So, in truth, it doesn't matter what happened then, to me, except to the extent I let it matter. I will worry about what I have done, and in my leisure time, with extra resources, I will have a care to the past. But you're never going to be able to build a political platform against me based on my "guilt" for a past that I wasn't part of, because I have no sense of guilt whatever for what was done by others.

If I killed a man two years ago, I'm responsible. If my great grandfather ran a slave plantation in Virginia (he did, actually), I'm not at all responsible for that, and I feel no guilt about it. It's an interesting detail of history, nothing more. I do see the overhang of slavery today, and I support reasonable programs to address that - poverty relief, efforts to improve schools in poor black areas. But beyond that, some sort of personal guilt for reparations? Utter nonsense. Pfffft.

You guys are completely missing the point. The issue is "Shitty 'cultures'" and comparing them to non-shitty ones.

Well, cultures last longer than 150 years. When we talk about achievements of Western culture we should not limit ourselves to the last 10 or 50 years as the cultural revolutionaries do.

If Americans abolished slavery 150 years ago and some remote "shitty" corners (some could be in USA) still have it, it might mean that the later are 150 or 200 years behind or regressed back as we can do some day.

Do not become complacent and arrogant - "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty"

The shittiest countries are shitty because of Islam and Communism, not because of slavery. They have slavery because of their religion and their government. Their choices. We no longer have slavery because of our religion and our government, both of which are better.

They cannot repair themselves if they hold onto Islamism or Communism. They are doomed to be shitty because they have chosen shitty and stubbornly cling to it. That is not my responsibility. But if they gas kids, they get hit, to frighten them into not doing that anymore.
