Reflection on Pearl Harbor Share Today at 2:32pm On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan launched a surprise attack on the U. S. Naval Station at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in which thousands of Americans lost their lives and our naval fleet was severely damaged. The events of that day, which President Franklin Roosevelt vowed would “live in infamy,” proved for many Americans that aggressors would not simply ignore us if we ignored them. The attack on Pearl Harbor launched America into the Second World War, and our Greatest Generation did not hesitate when asked to sacrifice for their country. American men enlisted in droves, American women went to work in the factories that became our “Arsenal of Democracy,” and many Americans gave what little money they had to buy the war bonds that funded it all. They stormed the beaches at Normandy and fought on little known islands in the Pacific in the name of liberty. They don’t ask for our thanks, but I hope we will continue to give it because the sacrifice that began at Pearl Harbor is one of the many events that have defined the United States of America as “the last best hope of man on earth.” - Sarah Palin

Here's a phone call conversation you can laugh about. My house phone rang yesterday and instead of letting it go to voice mail, I decided to answer it. No one important ever calls the house phone and I usually never pick it up. The brief conversation I had reminded me of why I never pick it up. The conversation went like this: Caller: babble babble babble, Senora Jaramillo? Me: What? Caller: babble babble babble, Senora Jaramillo? Me: Excuse me? Caller: babble babble babble Senora Jaramillo? Me: Yeah, that's me but you're going to have to speak English because this is America. You can here my kids crack up laughing.... Then I here the click of the caller hanging up on me. I don't know what got into me. I get a lot of calls where the caller initially starts speaking in Spanish - they assume because of my last name that I will return conversation in Spanish. I used to politely ask them to speak to me in English, but I guess I'm a bit fed up with the calls.

These days all you need is a Spanish last name to get those calls. I don't know why people would automatically assume that just because somebody has a Spanish last name means they want their phone calls in Spanish.

They never like it when you turn the tables on them. I like the calls requesting I make a donation to some place I never heard of. They usually hang up on me right after I tell them if they donate to my non-profit, I will donate to theirs. Other times, I ask them if they would send me part of the donations to buy food and clothing for my children. I haven't tried the sales pitch thing yet. I'll need to remember that.
