Title: Amash Hints at 2020 Presidential Run

Representative Justin Amash (R-MI) hinted at a 2020 run during his speech at the Young Americans for Liberty National Convention. As one of the few libertarian Republicans in elected office, Amash is looking to continue the movement Ron Paul inspired.

Amash is one of the few remaining left in the Never Trump movement and is actively looking to back someone besides the Republican nominee.

Rare called him “the most high profile libertarian Republican in Congress after Senator Rand Paul” and one of the “two congressmen who are generally considered the most beloved by the Ron Paul-inspired liberty movement.”

It’s important that we have a strong libertarian voice running for president. And it’s important that we win. So, yes,” he told Rare in February when asked if he would run for President.

Amash ran for office back in 2010, winning 60% of the vote and became one of the youngest Representatives in Congress. He has won reelection twice, defeating his opponents by a wide margin. He is currently facing reelection against Douglas Smith who he will face in the general election.

And how would Amash do in the Republican primary? Ron Paul did well in 2012 though Rand Paul didn’t, dropping out after Iowa. Would an Amash run do better in courting libertarians and libertarian-leaning Republicans? It’s unknown considering that Senator Paul may run in 2020 as well.

If Amash were to run for the 2020 Republican nomination (that is assuming Donald Trump doesn’t win the presidency or proves to be an unpopular president) he would be likely be facing the same opponents who ran in 2016. Opponents such as Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) and maybe even Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) might jump into the race.

@Scottie_B_ When I'm president.

In any case, an Amash run would instantly receive much media attention. He’s young, he’s a minority (Arab-American), and a firebrand. He got national media attention when he organized a bipartisan group of Representatives in an effort to defund the NSA’s mass surveillance program. There’s also a website dedicated to drafting him for a 2020 run.

Amash would certainly be able to capitalize on the libertarian movement. The question is: how far will he go? Would he wind up short like the Pauls did? Or would he go all the way to the White House?

Looks like he is still in the Never Trump Movement with his continuing opposition to Trump ...

... assuming Donald Trump....proves to be an unpopular president ...

It appears that he is doing everything possible to make Trump an unpopular president so he [Amash] can run for president in 2020.

Trump attacked the Freedom Caucus first and without any cause.

What, now you're going to whine because someone has stood up to a notorious Twitter bully like Trump? Aw, pity the poor bully. Someone actually fought back against his ridiculous Twitter attacks.

I know you think it's wildly popular but the time when Trump can tweet something out is running out. People are gonna get sick of it, if they haven't already.

With all his tweeting, Trump is going to turn himself into the Twit President.

Your pic did not come through. It is visible to you because it is already in your browser cache so it just fills it in. But for those of us who have not visited that website, they have it blocked to keep other websites (and forums like LF) from hotlinking to their pix to force them to pay the bandwidth for pix being displayed on other websites.

Via another browser trick, I see it is a guy slamming down popcorn.

If you open this thread on another computer or force a full refresh of your browser (or flush its browser cache), you would get an empty photo frame on this thread which is what the rest of us are seeing.

Amother loud mouthed twerp with a mind like a teenager and a smiling face seeking to build his political future by becoming president. In the next few months they will pop up seeking the sacrifice of public service like dandelions.

I see the popcorn guy.

I thought this was a GIF. However, it is in WEBP format. That's a newer Google standard that they tried (and failed) to foist on the world. Google wants WEBP to replace JPG and AniGif.

My Google Chrome browser will display the WEBP popcorn guy. However, when I tried to load just the image into Firefox (by itself, not as part of the LF thread), the website apparently detected that I was on Firefox (who doesn't support WEBP) so they converted the file request into an AniGIF. Hence, I failed to notice it was WEBP since WEBP pictures are pretty rare. Websites seldom use it since they can only count on it working in fairly new versions of the Google Chrome browser (and Opera and Pale Moon browsers). Firefox says it will include support but they aren't actually doing it and might never include it.

The picture Gatlin linked was: https://media3.giphy.com/media/JCAOlnDdS5gNa/200w.webp#44

When I got the image to load, it gave me: https://i.giphy.com/JCAOlnDdS5gNa.gif

Which looks like:

In that format, it will work for everyone. Not just Chrome browsers.

So I was wrong. It didn't show the pic to me in Firefox but not because it wasn't in my browser cache and the origin site was trying to prevent hotlinking (which is usually the reason why pix don't show up on LF threads). Instead, it failed because it uses a new-ish file format by Google to foist their own WEBP format on the world to replace JPG/AniGIF.
