They border on being obsessive about cleanliness and odors. Probably because they have lived so close to one another for so many centuries. They do smell different than westerners,or at least the women do when they get sweaty. I have no idea or interest in how the men smell. They smell different because of the different diet. They eat very little red meat,and as a result they actually stink LESS than westerners when they sweat. Or at least that was my impression. Your actual mileage may vary. I guess that would depend on his diet. Not that it isn't usually easy to tell a Japanese-American from one that was born and raised in Japan. I have a friend who is a first generation American. His mother and father were both born and raised in Japan,and neither was over 5'4".
