Not entirely true, Europe was at just as great a threat from communist aggression as was the US, in fact greater threat because of the vast territory commanded by the Soviets in Europe after WWII. They had taken over the baltic states, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Checkoslovakia, Bulgaria, eastern Germany and made things difficult for Austria.The soviets truly believed you keep what you conquer. Half of Europe was under soviet domination with soviet forces at the borders of free countries and the communists ruled in Yugoslavia, Albania with an insurgency in Greece. In this reality NATO was needed to make western Europe a baston and Trump is right, rich nations like Germany should pay for their own defense, this is not 1945.
