SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A "cyanide bomb" planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday.

Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, on Thursday afternoon near his home east of Pocatello when he saw what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground and touched the device, causing it to detonate.

The explosion sprayed the boy and his 3-year-old, 90-pound (40 kg) pet with toxic cyanide gas, according to the boy's mother, Theresa Mansfield.

“Canyon said there was a bang like a bomb, then an explosion of an orange substance that covered him and Casey, who was writhing in pain on the ground before he died right in front of Canyon,” she said.

Can you tell us why this kid was a dumb ass and his dog deserved to die?

"Can you tell us why this kid was a dumb ass and his dog deserved to die?"

From the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services:

"Wildlife Services policies and procedures are designed to minimize unintentional take or capture of domestic pets. It posts signs and issues other warnings to alert pet owners when wildlife traps or other devices are being used in an area for wildlife damage management".

" M-44s are spring-activated devices that release cyanide when they are activated through upward pressure or pulling. These devices are only set at the request of and with permission from property owners or managers."

If the signs were posted and the warnings issued and the kid ignored them when he was trespassing on other's property, that makes him a dumb ass. I feel bad for the dog and the fact that he had a dumb ass owner.

Well Whitey, you owe the kid an apology. Observe the News Broadcast in post # 10, you will be advised that there were no signs, no warnings, etc. The Wildlife Services effed up here. It is much better to shoot coyotes, or use other means. Around here, we shoot them. Using these M-44's was a real DUMB ASS move !!

I suspect somebody got a little boost to their "retirement fund " from a vendor for approving the purchase & use of these things.

Yeah. And they also said the cyanide bomb was a "few hundred feet" from the boy's house but then later said the bomb was 10 minutes away. So maybe there were signs. Maybe there weren't.

So maybe there were signs. Maybe there weren't.

The chances of us ever learning the truth via the Internet seems pretty damned slim.

Probably the local will get newspaper reporting on the full investigation of the case. But we'll never hear about it unless we follow up obsessively.

This is one of those stories that generates big headlines (and lots of click traffic) but you never hear the result of the full investigation. Generally, because the truth is never nearly as awful as the initial hysterical reports indicate. And yet we fall for these initial reports, despite the fact that we all know how often the first reporting on most anything is completely and flat-out wrong.

Even in the video you posted, the same news broadcast from the same news station reported that the cyanide bomb was a "few hundred feet" from the boy's house ... but then later said the bomb was 10 minutes away.

And I think the word "bomb" is a little melodramatic.

If you look back, I did mention it myself and compared it to many other well-known initial reports that turned out factually wrong. We can all name such cases where initial reporting was wildly wrong (e.g. Trayvon incident, Ferguson rioting, Gabby Giffords shooting, Boston Massacre, even 9/11, etc.).

Initial reports tend toward sensationalism just to draw clicks or viewers on the local news channel. So if a bunch of bored hack bloggers on Teh Interwebs decide that they can make clickbait titles and link to this story and rewrite in the most sensationalist way possible, they can drive big traffic to/from their sites and make money off it.

The Almighty Click meets the Almighty Dollar, so to speak.

And I think the word "bomb" is a little melodramatic.

Give Deckard a few hours and he'll come up with a version of this story that describes it as a "cyanide mini-nuke".
