This was due to the Founders' correct perception of just how unjust and counterproductive and corrupt the use of treason charges against enemies had been in the monarchies of Europe. This is something that distinguishes us (to our credit) against other governments in general but especially in comparison to Europe's monarchies and even to the EU's modern parliamentary democracies. We forget too quickly the countries of Europe simply do not have freedom of speech and freedom of assembly and so many other things we take for granted.
