Title: Has anybody else had or heard of this kind of sleep pattern?

For years now this has been the way I sleep:

I fade off and have some kind of dream and then wake up. It's very seldom a disturbing dream. It's just a boring forgettable dream. This happens again and again over the course of the night.

I probably wake up at least 10 times a night.

You could have sleep apnea. Most hospitals have a sleep center where they wire you up and you spend the night.

Insurance will cover it if your doctor recommends it.

I probably wake up at least 10 times a night.

You probably aren't getting much of or enough of deep REM sleep.

Do you have any periods where you stay asleep at least a few hours? If not, maybe not so good. Staying asleep for at least a few hours between 10pm and 2am is a Good Thing (maximizes your body's HGH production).

You may have some variety of sleep deprivation.

Are you doing any microsleeping? I used to when I worked alone in the middle of nowhere and had little to do on a night shift. I did it deliberately, holding a pencil between my fingers, like it was a cigarette. I would drop off for a few seconds, my fingers would relax enough for the pencil to slip, it would hit the floor and clatter a bit in my dead-quiet workspace and I'd wake up, feeling surprisingly refreshed, as though I had napped for several hours.

Human sleep patterns are still a mystery in many ways. There is a lot more treatment available now. Even our small town hospital offers sleep disorder diagnosis via an overnight stay.

You slept on the job? I'm calling the Labor Secretary's office first thing in the morning.

The vast majority of dreams are meaningless. In certain psychiatric disorders, the patient may have vivid recurring dreams that indicate the underlying disorder.

For normal people, dreaming tends to be pretty random and is mostly just the brain's way of transferring short-term memory to intermediate memory and transferring intermediate memory to long term memory.

We all have those dreams like "where the hell did that come from" or, like the ones you describe, "that's boring as hell". But they rarely mean anything. Just the brain doing its memory housekeeping tricks as we are in REM sleep.

You slept on the job? I'm calling the Labor Secretary's office first thing in the morning.

Only 4-5 seconds at a time. At a remote location in the wilderness.

I only mentioned it because the Wiki page on sleep deprivation mentioned microsleeping. Back in the Eighties, I had never heard of it but I was doing it. Now all these years later, I learn it is called microsleeping.

My brain does several other odd sleep tricks too. I avoid exploring them any for fear I might develop a serious sleep disorder.

So is getting drunk, but you may not feel so good when you wake up.

The herbs are much easier on the system, really.

If you have sleep apnea; side sleeping is best because it helps keep your airways open.

If you are sleeping on your back, make yourself sleep on your side.

It will be hard to do at first because you will tend to gravitate to your old sleeping position on your back.

Please remember to let me know if this works for you.

Edit: Try both sides. You may find that you find one side better than the other.

Press a finger against one nostril to fully close it.
Breathe deeply through the other nostril.
Reverse the procedure with the second nostril.
Do you feel nostrils are fully clear for breathing?
Also, are you a mouth breather and do you snore?

Do you have any periods where you stay asleep at least a few hours? If not, maybe not so good. Staying asleep for at least a few hours between 10pm and 2am is a Good Thing (maximizes your body's HGH production).

4 hours sleep minimum is what the Army preaches and teaches when in a high optempo situation. It is estimated (according to Army swag experience) most can sustain such over a 96 hour period of 4 hours of sleep. Of course the body is put to stress and eating patterns are irregular as well. Probably why I am a mess after doing this quite often over a 26 year period. :)

Where the 96 hours comes in, is the Army tested this during annual unit evaluations where the evaluation time period is 96 hours.

Now if they did such at a unit National Training Center (NTC) rotation, they could get a good gauge of sleep deprivation, physical and mental stress over a two week period as a unit is usually under stress and high optempo for two weeks. There is a one day 'reset' period from live fire to force on force scenarios which most leaders sleep through. One such rotation my Battery commander passed out from exhaustion on day 6 of the 14 days. He was worthless the next 3 days and yours truly was the executive officer, so picked up his command duties and also did my job of herding the cats and counting beans and bullets. I was up for three days straight while he was down for the count and only got those refreshing cat naps you mentioned.

When he came back all fresh and started issuing orders, the First Sergeant told him to sit down, eat a meal as I was ushered into a makeshift tent and 'ordered' by the First Sergeant to sleep with an NCO posted to make sure I stayed in the fart sack (sleeping bag) for 7 solid hours. I guess the First Sergeant realized he could lose the commander for a few days but not me. :)

Of course the weather was horrible in the Mojave desert that December. It rained, sleeted and snowed (when we reached higher altitude) the entire two weeks with a nice strong wind to boot.

Good prep though for future combat deployments as I worked 18 hour days or more in a command post when I was a LTC. Different type of stress, physical conditions much better.

You make it all sound horrible.     : )

I think the high stress environment for young active military-age men and how it affects their sleep needs is probably a bit different than typical civilian sleep pattern problems. Even so, the military tests provide some basic data that is useful.

Hey Brutha,

That's quite a sleep-deprivation exercise. No doubt -- the Army pushed you to the Outer Limits in several ways.

This exercise is a necessary but excellent one with which to gauge the limit of cogent command. Am I to understand that 4 hours TOTAL sleep within a 96 hour eval-window is the accepted max? WITHOUT so much as a mini-nap? Your Battery Commander went the extra 24 hours before wiping out.

After that, you then were asked to step into command and went 72 hours straight without a wink until you were ordered to sleep? By chance did you find your decision-making actually oddly became easier after 48 hours of n0-sleep? Do you wonder how much longer you could have gone? CONCLUSION: It was determined that two COs can sufficiently handle a week or so without normal sleep.

I wonder how the body reacts to sleep during sustained battle-stress and the adrenal rushes? Is the body capable of adapting and create "pockets" of 5-15 minute naps that suffice? Are you able to illuminate on he subject at hand, Pete?

Try:

1) L-Theanine (very effective at quietig an over-active mind)
2) Magnesium L-Threonate (new form of Magnesium relaxes muscles, penetrates the blood-brain barrier, AND doesn't rush you to to bathroom :-/
3) Sublingual Melatonin
4) Limit liquid
5) Don't do any internet a minimum of one hour before bed

You are asking this of a guy that could sleep standing up in a formation,or even riding in the back of a deuce and half up a dirt road?

My simple soldier philosophy from Day One consisted of these rules.

1:If there is no reason to stand, why aren't you sitting?

2:If there is no reason to sit,why aren't you laying down.

3: If there is no reason to be awake, why aren't you sleeping?

4:The army will provide you with all the discomfort you need. There is no good reason to make it easier for them.

Oooohh...That's juuuust a tad different, eh? ;-)

But you really don't get those 4 hour blocks every 24 hours. Well the Soldiers do and some NCOs but the officers usually not. So you are basically doing a 96 hour marathon without sleep trying to catch a cat nap. But it is only 96 hours and as a 20 something, that's fine.

Best time to catch a cat nap during an Exercise Evaluation is during the chemical attack phase. You suit up put the mask on, and you could be standing up sleeping and nobody would know. :)
