Opinions/Editorials Title: LibertyPost Is Back UP!! LP Notice: Downtime, Repairs and Everything. Source: Goldi URL Source: http://none Published: Aug 22, 2009 Author: Goldi Post Date: 2009-08-22 11:19:41 by Goldi-Lox Hello Everyone! We are FINALLY back online!! As you all know we have been offline since 8-12-09. Ten days is a long time, so let me tell you what happened. Around the end of July/Early August we had a failure of the internal fan on our server. Heat built up and over time it damaged various components. Eventually, we had a complete failure of the system and it shut down. Our Sysop went in and due to access time costs was only able to jerry-rig a new fan, and we crossed our fingers that no permanent damage had impacted the componenets. No such luck. After intermittent sputters, blurps, and heaves, it gave up the puter-ghost on 8/12/09. RIP --- What to do? We had posted a thread requesting donations to buy components to repair the server about a week before it died. We collected about $800 by the time of the total failure. We decided that rather than replace it piece by piece and have multiple failures and repair access, we needed to bite the bullet and replace everything. We considered a new server, as well, but... we had to install a new operating system test the OS with the new components test the software on the new OS repair the database Throwing a new server into that mix would delay startup at least another week or more. I think that would have been too long to be down. The quickest and best fix was to replace ALL the components, upgrade the operating system and then repair the database. During this time we posted the link for donations, and many LP members send funds. Fortunately, we got enough to pay the access fees for the 4 hour repair time which was $680. Parts were ordered and received. (There was another fiasco there, but bottom line is "don't order from NewEgg if you are in a hurry for the parts; Use TigerDirect!) The parts went thru a 24 hour burn in test before install. The OS could not be upgraded to the most current due to our software would not work with it, so the best iteration was 3 back from current. Once the hardware and software were a "go" then the LP software was installed. Once we reached that point it was about 8 hours beyond our anticpated uptime - so we made the decision to delay the start up overnight for testing and bring it up this morning. I posted several articles, deleted an article, did some background admin work, and everything seems to be working fine. We also got some additional funds to apply to our arrears. I added about $1000 of my money to the kitty as well. If you discover anything not working please post it onto this thread, and we will see if there is a fix. Please extend thanks to our Sysop, because he basically brought LP back from the dead.
