CRATER LAKE — Someone has stolen thousands of rounds of ammunition from a locked building at Crater Lake National Park, and the National Park Service is asking for the public’s help in finding the whoever is responsible.

According to a news release Friday from the Park Service, the rifle and pistol ammunition was stolen from a locked building in the park’s headquarters area. The ammunition was used as part of the park’s law enforcement program. Its theft is a felony.

Anyone with information that could help invesitgators is asked to contact the Investigative Services Branch by phone, text, website, email or social media. Callers can remain anonymous, although investigators are offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.

The ISB tip line is 888-653-0009; send a text to 202-379-4761; reply online at www.nps.gov/isb and click “Submit a Tip” or send email to nps_isb@nps.gov. A message can be left via Facebook at @InvestigativeServicesNPS or Twitter to @SpecialAgentNPS.

Gee, wonder who even knew the ammunition was there, and where it was stored ? Article did not say, but I would guess most of it was .40 S&W, 5.56 NATO, and probably some .30-06, or 7.62 x 51 NATO. Maybe some 12 ga 00 Buck.

Thousands of rounds ?? You could put several thousand rounds in the trunk of a car. Or are we actually talking a couple of truck loads ?

Wonder if they have any weapons missing ?

Who took it, and WHEN ? Maybe Yogi Bear took it ?

10,000 rounds of ammo stolen from Crater Lake National Park

[......]

The ammunition, which was a combination of rifle and handgun bullets, was taken from a building near park headquarters, park spokeswoman Jennifer Evans said.

The theft was discovered Monday morning when a ranger noticed a door in that building was open, and when he looked in he noticed the missing ammunition, Evans said.

That volume of ammunition was normal for the rangers, who use it for training, qualification and regular law-enforcement operations, Evans said.

[......]

This story has been censored from what it was a few days ago. Before the censors got to it....

The number of rounds stolen was 10,000.

Was GrandIsland involved with his many 50,000 rusted primers? Why would anyone have 50,000 primers in the first place?

" Why would anyone have 50,000 primers in the first place? "

You don't shoot much, or ever do you ? A lot depends on what kind of shooting you do - plinking, trap, bullseye, skeet, trap, 3 gun, USPSA, long range rifle, Cowboy Action Shooting, etc, etc. To be proficient in those disciplines, requires " mucho " practice. I have a friend that he & his wife compete in USPSA. She at one time was a national champion in the Womens Class. They expend thousands of rounds, each, yearly just to maintain their skill. To minimize their expense, most all of those people reload. To reload requires brass, powder ( different kinds ), projectiles ( bullets ) mind boggling varities, and, PRIMERS, of various types, and brands. Depending on what you are reloading ( rifle, shotgun, handgun ) then there are sub groups, ex: lg rifle, sml rifle, lg hand gun, sml hand gun, then further, there is the magnum category.

If all you do is shoot a couple boxes of .22 in a year, having a large number of components might seem extreme to you. I once met a surgeon that his hobby was a .50 cal machine gun. A quad 50 to be exact, mounted on a vintage WWII era half track. That baby really spit out some lead, LOL! Yes, he paid the tax, and was fully licensed & had his weapons registered with the ATF. You obviously would have a heart attack if you knew how much ammo that one man expended in a year, and at show demonstrations he participated at. He told me he mostly bought surplus ammo by the case ( being a surgeon, he could afford it ) I would think these days the supply of surplus .50 BMG is thin. Don't know what he does now. I met the Dr at Knob Creek, in Ky. If you can, you should go sometime. The main event is twice a year. You can see it on line. Look up Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot.

But go if you can. Observe, and talk to people. You should also go to a USPSA match. It would also be a good idea to go to a local trap / skeet shoot. It would give you a very interesting & illuminating education. Ever hear of Camp Perry ? Very famous rifle match, mostly service rifles. The guys that compete there, expend thousands of rounds each year to keep up their skills.

I don't know what kind of shooting GI takes part in, but as I have partially explained, having 50,000 primers is really not all that extreme, if one does much shooting at all, especially if one reloads. Of course, if you are stinking wealthy, you could just buy it by the case, and save time. LOL But go to some shooting events, and talk to people. You might learn something !

At one time, I use to load .45acp for USPSA shooters.... (thousands of rounds a month on a progressive RCBS press)... and I've competed myself.

I now just shoot/practice combat handgun A LOT.... and I Shot sporting clays, trap during winter and summer league events... and I do a fair share of long range rifle shooting.

" Bucky has the IQ of a chalkboard. "

LOL !

Yeah, after his naive question, I wasted too much effort trying to educate him on why people would want a lot of primers. Oh well.

His only experience with guns is when he used his "Roy Rogers" cap gun, LOL !!

I use to reload pistol & rifle with a Dillon progressive. Have not reloaded in several years. Got old, lazy, and preoccupied. But think I might again. Planning to build a LR 700 in .338, so may load up some loads for that, if I find some time & get it built. For shotgun, I just use cheap Lee Load All's. Cheap, but they work well.

I do not shoot competition. Did when I was in HS, and a bit in military. Nowdays I prefer banging around here on the farm, with family & friends. Lately , have mostly been shooting .22's. Fun, cheap, & easier to pack around. Sometimes I go to a local range, do some 600-700 yd "plinking".

BTW, I have never seen " rusted " primers, have you ? LOL ! Bucky probably thinks bullets, powder & brass rust also LOL !!

Stay safe, watch your 6 ;)

No... not if stored in a dark dry place. I actually have some IMR powders that I still use that are probably 40 years old. I know they'll still go BOOM. lol

I've got some .30-06 on en bloc clips, WWII vintage, way older than I am, that still perform well. Oldest components I have are some primers that are probably over 30 yr old. I may use some this summer.

Well, have fun, shoot straight... and stay safe.

Always. Stashed, and a stack of loaded mags, in pouches, right next to the ready rack! Never know when BLM / BP might take a wrong turn, and come out here. LOL ;)
