I don't doubt they did. I think Obama did have a bigger crowd in 2009 certainly. Probably there were a lot of local Dem federal employees who turned out for him. You notice that they keep citing the ridership of the DC Metro on the days of these events. But doesn't that argue that a lot of the turnout is just some locals, a march on downtown and not an actual "march on Washington" comprised only of worried angry citizens from across the nation. The Dems can swell their crowd sizes with relatively local crowds, not just from the extremely Dem areas of the capitol but from the entire D.C. metro area and across the (heavily-Dem) eastern seaboard, especially Dem-heavy areas like Maryland and northern Virginia where a lot of federal employees live. I do think it likely that the libs had a bigger crowd on Saturday than Donald did on Friday. But I think Trump's Friday crowd really was mostly outsiders, not relative locals. We shouldn't be too impressed by crowd sizes anyway. That crowd in MI/WI/PA who handed the electoral college to Trump is the crowd we actually need to keep in mind. Let the Million Mommy Moron zombies march on D.C. in undead hordes but keep MI/WI/PA in mind for 2018/2020. I thought Trump and Spicer made a little too much of this overall. I can see why they would want to take the fight to the opposition media from day one but arguing crowd sizes seems a little small ball. It's usually better to keep the opposition off-balance by making news, not reacting to the media. A White House has a considerable range of tactics it can use against an uppity media. Maybe this was a call where Bannon carried the argument, over the more reserved Priebus/Kushner/Spicer faction. Bannon's role is a little mysterious but there was something Breitbartish about Spicer's hasty press conference. It just seemed like a Bannon thing to me, maybe with Kellyanne supporting Bannon on it. There was never any doubt that Team Trump will have to take the battle to the media sooner or later. It's a judgment call on picking which battle you want to fight and when. Supposedly, that is Bannon's job as advisor, that of a media and political strategist.

D.C. is about the only part of America that is even more Dem than even NY or CA. Hillary took 91% in DC, with Trump getting just over 4%. So there's plenty of local astroturf in D.C. and at colleges in the area where they can summon up their horde of zombies to prance for the cameras. Where's the surprise, really?
