“As we begin 2017, the most urgent threat to liberal democracy is not autocracy,” writes William Galston of The Wall Street Journal, “it is illiberal democracy.”

Galston’s diagnosis is not wrong, and his alarm is not misplaced.

Yet why does America’s great export, liberal democracy, which appeared to be the future of the West if not of mankind at the Cold War’s end, now appear to be a church with a shrinking congregation?

Why is liberal democracy losing its appeal?

A front-page story about France’s presidential election, in the same day’s Journal, suggests an answer.

In the final round next May, the French election is likely to come down to a choice of Marine Le Pen or Francois Fillon.

Fillon won practicing and nonpracticing Catholics alike by a landslide, and took 3 in 5 votes of those professing other faiths.

Le Pen wants France to secede from the EU and move closer to Vladimir Putin’s Russia. The five million Arabs and Muslims currently in France, the prospective arrival of millions more, and recent Islamic terrorist atrocities have all propelled her candidacy.

Fillon succeeded in his primary by identifying himself as a man of Catholic beliefs and values and an opponent of same-sex marriage and abortion. He does not repudiate secularism, but believes that the France that was “the eldest daughter of the church” should also be heard.

Together, what do the Le Pen and Fillon candidacies tell us?

France and Europe may be moving inexorably away from a liberal democratic, de-Christianized and militantly secularist America. If we are the future, less and less do France and Europe appear to want that future.

While our elites welcome the Third World immigration that is changing the face of America, France and Europe are recoiling from and reacting against it. The French wish to remain who and what they are, a land predominantly of one language, one culture, one people.

America preaches that all religions are equal and should be treated equally. France does not seem to share that liberal belief. And just as the Middle East seems to want no more churches or Christians, France and Europe appear to want no more mosques or Muslims.

Where America’s elites may celebrate same-sex marriage and “reproductive rights,” more and more Europeans are identifying with the social values of Putin’s Russia. Pro-Putin parties are surging in Europe. Pro-America parties have been facing losses and defections.

“Because human beings are equal, any form of ethnocentrism that denies their equality must be rejected,” writes Galston.

That may well be what liberal democracy commands.

But the 24 nations that emerged from the disintegration of the USSR, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were all built on ethnonational foundations— Croatia and Serbia, Estonia and Latvia, Georgia and Armenia, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

And was it not their unique ethnic identities that caused South Ossetia and Abkhazia to break free of Georgia?

Indeed, if what America has on offer is a liberal democracy of 325 million, which is multiracial, multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual, which celebrates its “diversity,” then where in Europe can one find a great party preaching this as the future their country and continent should embrace?

European peoples are largely fleeing from the future America preaches and promises.

Europe’s nations are rising up against what liberal democracy has produced in the USA.

Galston contends correctly that, “few leaders and movements in the West dare to challenge the idea of democracy itself.”

True, so far. But worldwide, Caesarism appears on the march.

Russia, China, Turkey, Egypt and the Philippines exemplify the new popularity of the strongman state. Western liberals initially cheered the Arab Spring, but what it produced curbed their enthusiasm. Free elections in Palestine and Lebanon produced victories for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Though Galston chastises the Polish and Hungarian governments as illiberal democracies, they seem to remain popular at home.

What, then, does the future hold?

The present crisis of Europe has been produced by the migration of tens of millions of Third World peoples never before assimilated in any European nation, and by the pollution and poisoning of these nations’ traditional culture.

This has caused millions to recoil and declare: If this is what liberal democracy produces, then to hell with it.

And if Europe is moving away from what America has become and has on offer, what is there to cause Europeans to turn around and re-embrace liberal democracy? Why not try something else?

In Brexit, the English were voting against the diverse liberal democracy that their capital of Londonistan had become.

Donald Trump’s victory represented a rejection of Barack Obama’s America. And whether he succeeds, what is there to cause America to look back with nostalgia on the America Obama came to represent?

Our Founding Fathers believed that democracy represented the degeneration of a republic; they feared and loathed it, and felt that it was the precursor of dictatorship. They may have been right again.

Historically, it has never been a winning proposition to bet against the United States of America.

Yes, American democracy DOES tend to dissolve ethnicity into a national ethos. It DOES tend towards liberal democracy, secularism, and personal liberty (marijuana legalization, gay marriage, etc.).

And yes, the existing religious and ethnic cultures of the WHOLE WORLD, including within America, have ALWAYS resisted all such movement. America has always been like this, and has always broken with the status quo, and the rest of the world has always been slower and more resistant. Conservative elements in America, too, have been like the rest of the world - resisting the American march towards liberal, libertarian, egalitarian homogenization.

We all know what conservatives hate about all of these things. Now let's consider the main advantage of egalitarian, libertarian liberalism, the "American Way" that the world, and many Americans, have always found so troublesome but that immigrants love.

It is simply this: human beings are essentially interchangeable. Ethnic culture has zero economic value. Monuments, such as the great architecture of Paris, has value as tourist draws, but American (and other) tourists largely despise the ethnic French who live there (they also despise the ethnic North Africans who have moved in). Truth is, nobody else's culture is interesting or valuable once you get past the food. It's all just annoying and pointless tradition. Likewise, there is nothing in the world more useless than another man's religion, and nothing less interesting to talk about.

I am fascinated by my own interactions with God - so much so that I used to write about it. I was telling the truth, but NO ONE CARES. And if no one cares to listen to a guy actually talking about direct conversations with God and full-on miracles, most certainly nobody cares to listen to anybody else's hokey made up religious nonsense. Catholics care intensely about Catholicism. Jews care intensely about Judaism. Protestants care intensely about their particular flavor of Protestantism. Muslims, their Islam. And nobody cares, at all, about anybody else's religion. We all think that everybody else's religion but our own is a bunch of bullshit - and we're all mostly right too.

SOOOOO...what is American egalitarian libertarian democracy really all about? Reducing to zero the power and influence of everybody's culture - because it is all useless dreck, the dragging anchor of an inbred past - and reducing to zero the power and influence of everybody's ridiculous religious superstitions. The net result is a society that does NOT value ethnic culture, and does NOT value religious mysticism much at all - other than praising its OWN cultural norm (which is individuality, a singularly difficult thing on which to build any sort of MOVEMENT, but the most appealing "ethnic culture" ever devised - EVERYBODY in EVERY old, constrained, backwards, idiot culture yearns to be, first of all, king and in command, but failing that, to be FREE of all that crap. Nowhere except the Mormon hereafter offers the individual a crown, but America, alone, offers everybody from everywhere the second best: individual liberty, free of the ethnic and religious opinions of others.

That is immensely liberating to the INDIVIDUAL. And it is INDIVIDUAL geniuses, after all, who have discovered and invented everything. Ethnicities invent nothing. Religions are content with the way it was a thousand years ago and are the polar opposite of innovation.

America's draw is individual liberty. And individual liberty MEANS the wholesale corrosion of organized ethnic culture and organized religion. At the start, religion - a Protestant one - and culture - an English one - were strong, but individual liberty corroded it all. And that corrosion, America became IMMENSELY MORE POWERFUL and IMMENSELY WEALTHIER than it was at start.

By the end of World War II, the American ideal set had conquered the world, literally, in a military and economic sense. Of course, the ideals are highly corrosive to every other culture and religion, precisely because the American ideal essentially FREES individuals FROM their culture and their religion.

Pat Buchanan and conservatives really hate this, because they treasure culture and religion. But the strongest argument for the American dissolution of both into the egalitarian, libertarian, democratic individualism that the world, and much of America, so fears is that it is MORE SUCCESSFUL economically, militarily and organizational than any of its rivals. America is THE superpower, in every sense, because everybody came here from everywhere in order to be themselves unfettered. They found that the fetters are still there here, but less so, markedly less so. And MOST people LIKE IT THAT WAY. Freer, they are more creative, innovative, and more willing to take risks. The net result is a whole that is less than the sum of its parts, but greater than anybody else BECAUSE those individual parts have much more freedom of motion than in most other places.

Libertarians would remove all of the constraints, but that's not the American Way either.

The argument against Buchanan, and the French and Russian and Chinese and Arabic and Muslim and Jewish and Christian models is that over time America has been more successful - wealthier, more victorious, more innovative, than any of the alternatives. America is not a comfortable place for intellectuals, because there is ultimately no agreed upon standard of intelligence, or right, or anything else. There are just a set of rules, haphazardly, unevenly and often brutally enforced. They work overall to atomize humanity into individuals, each of whom is free to do as he damn pleases within the parameters of law.

Faced with this, all that culture or religion can do is stand outside and call in "You SHOULD follow ME!" And Americans, craving that stability, DO, to an extent. But that extent is only as far as they each individually WANT to. Thus you have generations of bishops lamenting that American Catholics are "Cafeteria Catholics" CHOOSING which parts of the religion they accept, and which parts they ignore. And there is NOTHING more horrifying to ANY authority than that: the notion that INDIVIDUALS ultimately have the veto over EVERYTHING that the organization desires, however "true" its true believers believe it to be.

They can't stand it. None of them can stand it. But America rolls on because the Big Motherfucker In Charge is the government, and ITS rules, and ITS rules, devised by people who want to be free of cultural constraints or religious constraints, don't give purchase to ethnic culture or religion to be able to call any shots.

This is immensely angering to conservatives of all stripes. But it is the reason that America is militarily, economically and culturally (in terms of appeal to individuals everywhere) number one and probably will remain so.

Like it or hate it (and Buchanan hates it), it is nevertheless so. Don't bet against the USA as it is configured, because you will probable lose. French election prediction: Fillon will win.
