Title: Trump mocks intel agencies about ‘so-called’ Russian hacking

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter Tuesday evening to deride the US intelligence agencies due to brief him on alleged Russian hacking of American political groups.

It was his latest attack on a key body he will rely on as commander in chief and again put him at odds with the agencies’ unanimous conclusion that Russia hacked Democratic Party groups and individuals to interfere in the US presidential election.

Trump suggested that intelligence officials postponed an ” ‘intelligence’ briefing on so-called ‘Russian hacking’ ” that they were set to deliver to him this week because they might need more time “to build a case.” He called the alleged delay “very strange.”

Trump said last week that he would receive an intelligence briefing on the Russian breaches this week and suggested it would come early on, telling reporters on New Year’s Eve that they would know more about the subject “Tuesday or Wednesday.”

But US intelligence officials disputed Trump’s tweet alleging a delay.

Top US intelligence officials have been scheduled to brief Trump on the full report on Russian hacking President Barack Obama ordered once it was completed, but the meeting was not set to take place until later in the week, according to US officials.

The meeting was never scheduled for Tuesday, as even Obama has yet to receive the full-fledged briefing on the Russian hacking, one US official said.

And a US intelligence official told CNN that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper was never scheduled to be in New York City, where Trump is, on Tuesday — and was perplexed about the “delay” Trump claimed was taking place.

Trump on Tuesday did receive a classified intelligence briefing — the Presidential Daily Briefing — which Trump has elected to receive only sporadically. But it did not dive deeply into the Russian hacking.

US officials briefed on the matter said Clapper, National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, FBI Director James Comey and CIA Director John Brennan are scheduled to attend the meeting with Trump providing him details on the Russian hacking.

While Obama met with the heads of US intelligence agencies in his first weeks as president-elect, Trump has yet to do so eight weeks after he was elected, which US officials said was due to Trump’s scheduling conflicts.

Instead, the President-elect has repeatedly questioned their assessment of Russian cyber activity.

Before the election, when 17 US intelligence agencies issued a public statement concluding that Russia orchestrated the hack of the Democratic National Committee, Trump immediately cast doubt on those conclusions, arguing it was impossible to distinguish between a Russian government operative and “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.”

After Obama then slapped a series of sanctions on Russia, Trump issued a statement calling for the country to “move on to bigger and better things” and then tweeted praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin for not retaliating against the sanctions.

Trump continued his skepticism on New Year’s Eve, telling reporters once again that it “could be somebody else.”

“I know a lot about hacking. And hacking is a very hard thing to prove,” he said.

He added that he also knows “things that other people don’t know, so they can’t be sure of the situation.”

On Tuesday, Russia again denied intervening in the US election campaign.

Reacting to a US intelligence official who told CNN the administration traced the hack to specific keyboards, which featured Cyrillic characters, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov said: “I don’t understand what this means exactly but Cyrillic characters can be used everywhere.”

“Once again I reject any possibility that official Russia can be involved in any way,” he added.

In December, Peskov said it was “indecent” of the US to “groundlessly” accuse Russia of intervention in the US election campaign.

The intelligence agencies work for the President. He does not work for them. It is remarkable that they should want to meet with the President-Elect on their schedule, as opposed to changing their schedules to accommodate his.

This is very stupid on their part, a dead-end power-play that can only irritate the new commander- in-chief before he enters office. Yes, it is true, for 15 more days Obama is their boss. Yes, it is true, for 15 more days, they do not have to accommodate Trump.

But then they will have to. And then they will face 8 years of the command and control by a man they have publicly defied.

One area where Trump will very likely clean house is the CIA. They are used to having cooperative Presidents, but THIS incoming President rejects their anti-Russia agenda, and he is going to force the agency to knock that off. They have already retaliated by trying to break him, during the election, and since with this Russian hacking business. He will break their balls instead, forcing them to change the agenda to follow him. HE is THEIR boss, not the other way around.

So, they have 15 more days to deny that reality and act with a degree of power over him - but then it is over, and many of their careers are over. The CIA works for the President. They are under his command and they serve at his pleasure. Not the other way around. This Obama CIA has tried to take on Trump. It will be first agency where he will clean house.

Trump is smart - the very first agency that he praised all over the place, and lavished personal attention on its agents, was....the Secret Service. They already love the guy. He understands that he is going to gore some oxen, including in agencies that have a nasty historical habit of killing people. Trump already has better relations, including personal relations, with the Praetorian Guard than any President in our lifetimes, and perhaps ever. This will serve him in very good stead as he attacks the CIA and brings it firmly to heel and under his command.

The CIA simply does not want to give up its war with Russia. It has been so long, is so long entrenched, and has seen casualties on both sides. They truly hate Putin (for embarrassing them over and over) and they hate the Russians. That's THEIR policy, and they think of themselves as knowing more than the rest of us. In a sense they do - they know more secrets.

But continued war with Russia is not in AMERICAN interests, and therefore it shall end EVEN THOUGH that means letting Putin "get away with it" in the Crimea, and in Iran and in Syria. It is in our interests that Putin have a firm hand in Syria and Iran - WE certainly cannot control those countries. And the notion that we were going to overthrow the Ukraine and Syria, install puppets and close the Russians out of the Mediterranean was always a fantasy more worthy of teenage Risk players than reasonable adults.

A lot of people don't like the idea of making peace and alliance with Russia to handle the broader issues of the day, such as Muslim jihad and the rise of China. Trump's Russia initiative is Nixon going to China. The CIA doesn't like it, doesn't understand it - it violates 60 years of institutional tradition and the long-developed professional belief of its agents.

But in the end, CIA agents are civil servants. They are NOT politicians. They are NOT elected. They are NOT independent actors who get to set American policy. They have behaved that way in the past, and it has led us into one disaster after another. They work for the President, and they SHALL do the President's bidding, not their own.

They don't believe that the normal rules of "Who's boss" apply to them. They are about to find out with Trump. Which is why Trump was smart to establish such strong relations with the Secret Service from the first day they were assigned. Because unfortunately there are rogue elements in the government that require us to have a Secret Service to counter. Changing the CIA against its will is one of those places where a real Praetorian Guard really loyal to Trump could matter.
