Title: Dear RNC: Trump Isn’t Jesus, and He’s Definitely Not a King, Either

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chair Sharon Day authored a Christmas press release that interrupted a restful holiday for some due to a misinterpretation suggesting a comparison of Donald Trump to Jesus Christ as “a new King.”

The release reads as such:

“Merry Christmas to all! Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind. Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King. We hope Americans celebrating Christmas today will enjoy a day of festivities and a renewed closeness with family and friends.

Even as we celebrate, we must also remember those among us who are less fortunate. Many on this day are without hope, and need the kindness and compassion of those around them. It is our prayer we will rise to meet the material, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals all around us, and what better day is there to love our fellow man than today?

As we open presents, enjoy Christmas dinner, and celebrate our own family traditions, we are mindful of our men and women in uniform. Many are stationed around the world today protecting our freedoms, and cannot be with their own spouses, children, parents, and siblings. We express the deepest gratitude for service that takes them away from celebrating with loved ones, and we ought to remember them in our thoughts and prayers not just on Christmas Day, but the whole year round.”

The National Review wrote a response to the dissenters suggesting that anyone upset about the sentence “Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King,” were simply theologically illiterate liberals.

Now, of course Priebus and Day were not comparing Trump to Christ, right? But who drafts their press releases?

First, just as with scripture, it is important to understand context. This press release came from the RNC: a national political organization that just recently had a populist presidential candidate elected to become the next President. To make any reference such as “a new King” that may leave even the slightest room for interpretation is better left not included.

Second, it is not theologically correct to refer to Christ as “a new King,” considering He is King from the foundation of the World. So no, it’s not just “eagle-eyed mainstream media theologians” who find error with the syntax, as the National Review suggested. Theologically groomed Christian libertarians take issue with it as well.

So do these fine folks:

Even further, when comparing last year’s Christmas RNC message to this one, the difference is slight, but notable:

“Each Christmas brings a chance to rejoice at the humble birth of the Child who brings a new hope,” said Chairman Priebus. “Over two thousand years ago in Bethlehem a Savior was born whose message is love and peace. As we gather with friends and loved ones, I want to wish a very Merry Christmas to all those who are celebrating.

“We also remember those who are suffering at this time of the year. Whether lonely, hurting, or struggling to make ends meet, all human beings need comfort as they endure hardship. Let us continue to embrace the charity and good will toward men that our Lord calls us to, and love our neighbors in need.”

“A very Merry Christmas to you and yours!” said Co-Chairman Day. “Like the shepherds who came to Bethlehem, we praise God for the good news. And like the wise men who came from afar, we strive to humble ourselves in the presence of the Prince of Peace. I hope we keep the joy of Christmas in our hearts well into the New Year.

“We also ask that God bless the men and women of our military who are away from their families during this season. We’re thinking and praying for them and their loved ones, and we give thanks for their heroism and sacrifice.”

No reference to “a new King,” but rather, “the Prince of Peace.”

As a last defense, any suggestion that this was “trolling” is not a justification. To use Jesus Christ as a tool for trolling, even with theologically illiterate liberals (as tempting as it may be) is a form of absolute blasphemy.

Finally, disregarding the theological error, this further illustrates how out-of-touch the RNC is with everyday Americans. It is very easy to misinterpret what was written, and that should have been known and expected, especially in a time when the media is starved for an easy target. Suggesting (even perhaps on accident) political leaders are divine is something I expect of the Left; not the RNC.
