WASHINGTON U.S. President-elect Donald Trump invited Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim last Saturday to his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida to smooth out the ill feelings between the two that arose during the U.S. presidential campaign, The Washington Post reported.
According to the daily, after their meeting was over, the president-elect described his meeting with Slim as a lovely dinner with a wonderful man.
The get-together was designed to open a friendly line of communication rather than delve into policy details, according to the Washington Post.
Slims visit to Mar-a-Lago came after one of Trumps closest advisers, Corey Lewandowski, made a secret trip to Mexico last Dec. 9 to meet with one of the richest men in the world.
It was Slim who apparently contacted Lewandowski following the Trumps upset election win to talk business and economic policy with the president-elect.
During the campaign, Trump accused Slim of using his influence with The New York Times to help Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton.
The now-president-elect said at the time that The New York Times reporters were not journalists, just corporate lobbyists doing the bidding of Carlos Slim and Hillary Clinton, and voters shouldnt let them decide the results of the election.
He added that Carlos Slim was the biggest shareholder of The New York Times, that as everyone knows he comes from Mexico, and that he gave piles of money to the Clinton Foundation.
Slim was very critical of some of Trumps campaign promises that won him the election, like building a wall on the Mexican border and pulling the U.S. out of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
