United States News Title: If Americans Stop Criticizing Our Government, We’ll Stop Being American There is a giant push by governments and mainstream corporate media to censor criticism of the American government as somehow helping Russia. Thats honestly one of the most anti-American, pro-Communist kinds of bullshit Ive ever heard. In reality, dissent is one of the most uniquely American values. As someone born and raised in the U.S., who has lived here my whole life, and who values the Constitution and the rule of law, Im furious that idiots are pushing a Soviet version of censorship which would destroy what our forefathers fought and died for: freedom. Im pissed off that theyre trying to destroy what makes us Americans. As Georgetown history professor Michael Kazin wrote in the Washington Post: Now, as throughout its history, the most effective way to love our country is to fight like hell to change it. It is not the function of our government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the government from falling into error Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it. The citizen who sees his societys democratic clothes being worn out and does not cry it out, is not a patriot, but a traitor. All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. To stand in silence when they should be protesting makes cowards out of men. All that is necessary for the forces of evil to prevail in the world is for enough good men to do nothing. Liberty has never come from government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of government. The history of liberty is a history of resistance. The history of liberty is a history of limitations of government power, not the increase of it. Those who are willing to trade freedom for security deserve neither freedom nor security. Activism is the rent we pay for living on the planet Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. The great glory of American democracy is the right to protest for right. I criticize America because I love her. I want her to stand as a moral example to the world. I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually. The article is saying that now that Trump is President, it's patriotic to criticize our government.
It always has been. Not to bootlickers like you though. Your ignorant belief that flag-burning is not protected by the 1st Amendment is just one example.
