Later today Donald Trump will likely pick Mitt Romney as his secretary of state. Not only is Romney an insider, he is also favorited by the neocons. During his failed presidential bid in 2011, Romney gave a speech at The Citadel in South Carolina. He told the cadets America should rule the world. “In an American Century, America has the strongest economy and the strongest military in the world,” he said. “In an American Century, America leads the free world and the free world leads the entire world.” “Here’s a guy who assembled a team of neocon retreads to write his foreign policy white paper, ‘An American Century.’ He allowed the title to be an obvious homage to the neocon Project for the New American Century, which in the 1990s built the ideological framework for the disastrous Iraq War and other ‘regime change’ strategies of President George W. Bush,” writes Robert Parry. “Romney even recruited Eliot Cohen, a founding member of the Project for the New American Century and a protégé of prominent neocons Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle, to write the foreword. And Romney still can’t get the neocon editors of the Washington Post to overlook his suggestion that the Afghan War shouldn’t be endless.” “Romney’s white paper makes clear that if he wins the White House, he is determined to reconstruct pretty much all of Bush’s foreign policy, complete with a renewed insistence on U.S. military dominance of the world and a full restoration of neocon influence in Washington,” Parry adds. Romney didn’t win the White House, but his cabal of neocons will take over the State Department if Trump selects him as secretary. Trump is also looking at Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis for secretary of defense. The neocons wanted him to run against Trump during the campaign. “Why are the neocons panting like a dog in heat for ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis? His speech today at the military-industrial complex funded Center for Strategic and International Studies tells the tale of the tape. What gets the Mad Dog all hot and bothered? War with Iran!” Daniel McAdams wrote in April. “In the Middle East, the future is going to be ghastly,” he said during his speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “We know that vacuums left in the Middle East seem to be filled by either terrorists or by Iran or their surrogates or Russia … In order to restore deterrence, we have to show capability, capacity and resolve.” “For all the talk of ISIS and Al Qaida everywhere right now… they’re a very serious threat. But nothing is as serious in the long term enduring ramifications, in terms of stability and prosperity and some hope for a better future for the young people out there, than Iran.” If you voted for Trump because you thought he’d bring the troops home and end the wars, you got bamboozled.
