We oppose everything

By kos
Wednesday Nov 09, 2016 · 10:01 AM CST

When President Barack Obama was first elected, Republicans made no bones about their desire to obstruct absolutely everything on his agenda. They didn’t even care if it was their own agenda. As soon as Obama adopted it, it was the second coming of communism—from the Heritage-created, Mitt-Romney implemented Obamacare, to Republican James Comey’s nomination to the FBI, to traditionally bipartisan transportation spending, to the Senate’s Gang of 8 immigration reform effort.

Their obstruction became so blatant, they even refused to perform their Constitutional duty to advise and consent to Barack Obama’s final Supreme Court justice pick. And did they suffer anything for it? Of course not. They won big in 2010, and again in 2014. And they won big last night.

Not only did obstruction help hamper Obama’s agenda, but just as importantly, it sent a message to base Republicans that their party actually gave a shit. It let them know that their party would fight for them, even if everyone else thought they were being assholes. It didn’t matter. That singular focus on obstructing Obama and the Democrats said they cared.

If Trump wants to pass a new Voting Rights Act, or renominate Merrick Garland, then we can work with him. Anything else, he can go fuck himself. Infrastructure spending? Let him get the votes from his own caucus. Anything else he might propose, even if we might agree with it? Let him get the votes from his own caucus while we hurl metaphorical molotov cocktails from the sideline.

They broke it, they own it.

Show our people we are fighting for them, and they’ll fight back for us in return. We are the fierce opposition. And as such, we need to oppose. Full stop. From Day One.

Damn, they are taking this kind of hard. And the GOP caucus is adequate for the House and Senate. They may invite the nuclear option in the Senate doing away with supermajority cloture.

They may invite the nuclear option in the Senate doing away with supermajority cloture.

Invite it? The Republicans should cite the precedent and use it EVERY DAMNED TIME the Democrats filibuster.

There is a REASON that rule was left untouched for almost two centuries, and that REASON was that the majority could foresee the day they were in the minority again and really NEEDED to stop something. So, no matter how important something was, the majorities over the centuries resisted the urge to win by violating the filibuster.

But under Obama, when the Democrats held the Senate, Harry Reid went nuclear to get something through, something the Democrats decided was "crucial".

They broke the tradition. The tradition will not be "restored" by the Republicans' refraining from doing the same thing. If the Democrats get power, they will just do it again, because THEY think that EVERYTHING is important, and they're entitled.

Well, Trump just won in an unpredicted landslide BECAUSE the people are fed up. The Republicans held the Senate BECAUSE OF Trump. So, everything that the Republicans do NOW really IS crucial. They need to enact sweeping law changes that embed what the people want on each thing into law. The Democrats should not be allowed to obstruct ANYTHING.

EVERY time they try, the Republicans should go nuclear, and simply turn the Senate into a majority vote chamber. Force march the whole agenda through, RAPIDLY, and nuke the filibuster.

The Democrats will have no means to resist anything. Get it all in place, and actually make things better, and the Democrats won't get power again. This election was for the future. Trump won it. That victory must be secured by decisive law changes, without delay. The filibuster is a delay. Nuke it every time. Force march through the entire legislative agenda in 100 days.

I can't recall ever having POTUS advised by the Senate for a SCOTUS selection; only being demanded their consent. Anyone?

sorry but I have to call you on this piece of unmittigated B/S. 2008 turnout was unprecedented, this was mediocre, so landslide it isn't. What you had here was apathy where the democrats didn't turnout as they had before. Dump didn't win, Dilliary lost.

If the people were so fed up more of them would have voted, the real news is that people in the rust bucket states are fed up and changed their allegience but elsewhere apathy

sorry but I have to call you on this piece of unmittigated B/S.

Unmitigated BS?

Trump was expected to lose by 6. He won, and he won big.

The Republicans were expected to lose the Senate. They only lost one seat, thanks to Trump's coattails.

The Republicans held the House easily.

And come early next year, they will have the majority of the Supreme Court once again, on account of this win.

This was a political revolution.

You may want to trivialize it, because you may not want to see Trump force march America through his agenda, but it's not trivial.

Thanks to Harry Reid's idiot move of gutting the filibuster in 2013, the Democrats no longer have the ability to stop or even substantially slow Republican legislation in the Senate.

The only think that can slow Trump down now is Republicans fighting with him.

They have been doing that all year. He trounced them. The Democrats, including the media, have thrown everything they had at him. He broke them. He broke the Clintons. They're done, and if Obama doesn't pardon them, they're going to jail.

Trump broke both parties and took state after state back from the Democrats.

Before this election, most of the power was in Democrat hands, and they were expected to win easily. Now, the Democrats don't have the ability to stop anything, the media is discredited, and Bill and Hillary Clinton are broken and staring at prosecution and prison.

You don't want to call that a landslide? Everything changed.

Fine. Keep your word "landslide". I'll just call it what it was: and earthquake, and a revolution.
