I am using Firefox and for quite a while (actually since I have had this computer), something was hogging all the memory.

I looked in the Resource Monitor and there is a program called svchost.exe that was the problem.

At times it is using over a gigabyte of memory.

I have been ending this process with no problems for a while - the system sort of does a reset, but after a few minutes, everything is working normally.

Can this cause any long term problems?

Svchost.exe is a generic and legitimate Windows process that loads several other critical services for proper Windows operation. But in several cases users are complaining that Svchost.exe is hogging their CPU or Memory resources without obvious reasons e.g. at moments when the user doesn't run any programs.

The obvious solution would be to switch to linux.

The obvious solution would be to switch to linux.

If one does not mind blowing up his software collection and learning Linux.

First thing turn off Windows updates. svchost is a necessary program that is used to serve Internet connections. Windows update is needlessly using it to check if every obscure item needs to be updated every time you start.

Update you can do when YOU request it.

Most popular Windows programs have linux equivalents & your backup data can be easily migrated from one platform to the other... However, if you're not satisfied with the alternatives, there are also ways to run your old Windows software using linux:
