2 Walmart stores in southeast Missouri to close Friday, October 21st 2016, 10:12 am CDT Saturday, October 22nd 2016, 8:58 am CDT Written by Alycia Dobrinick MISSOURI (KFVS) -

Walmart has announced that its stores in Piedmont and Caruthersville will be closing in early 2017. Additional Links Bootheel mayor, residents 'devastated' by closing of Walmart

According to a Walmart spokesperson, the company made the decision not to renew the lease for those locations.

Associates learned of the decision on Friday, October 21.

The company released a statement about the decision:

“After careful review of a number of factors, we have made the difficult decision to not renew the lease at our Caruthersville and Piedmont stores. We care deeply about our associates impacted by this decision and our priority is to take care of them. Our goal is to find them as many opportunities to continue to serve our customers as possible.”

Betsy Harden with Walmart said the company hopes to place employees at other locations.

If that is not possible, eligible employees will be offered severance packages.

Both stores are set to close on January 20, 2017.

According to Walmart, the Piedmont store employees 75 people and opened in 1987. The Caruthersville store has 85 employees and opened in 1977.

According to the Piedmont Chamber of Commerce, the next closest major shopping location is in Poplar Bluff or Fredericktown, both are about a 40-minute drive.

The Chamber said Piedmont currently has a Town & Country and Dollar General location in town. Both can be used for shopping.

The Chamber board and City of Piedmont will meet in the coming weeks to discuss what they will do next. They said it's still a big shock for the community.

Stores closest to Caruthersville include one in Dyersburg about 22 miles away and one in Kennett that's about 23 miles away.

The Caruthersville mayor said he plans to help employees find new jobs.

Looks like this "recovery" is getting to Walmart.

I do not go to church every time the doors are opened, but I love Jesus Christ. I am only human and fail Him daily. I believe Jesus is the Son of God, was born of a virgin, was crucified on a cross, died for my sins and rose from the dead and that He loves us dearly, and is faithful to forgive us of our sins. But He says that if you deny me in front of your friends I will deny you in front of my Father. Can I get an Amen!

Got a letter from my bank today - beginning in mid-December they'll be charging ATM fees for the first time since I've been with them.

I guess I'll walk in the door once or twice a month to get my walking around cash.

sounds like reality has reached some parts of the world, what was profitable 30, 40 years ago may not be profitable today, we once had a Kmart in this town, it's long gone, sometimes cheap and nasty doesn't cut it

You're just jealous because you're not an American. You wish you were but you aren't. You can only participate in American forums but not the political process. Poor you.

Not so, once I thought americans were good people, but as an adult, I see the harm they do, not only to others, but to each other. This farce you call a political process is a nonsense, elect a group of people who will choose a candidate already chosen by the people, gooblygook. You say poor you but in fact I say shame on you, how could you accept these people as candidates for high office? and as soon as one election is over you start the process all over again.

You're stupid.

Each state has a say so.

You would have California vote fraud ruling the country.

No, the stupidity is that that exists in an eighteenth century system of government designed to never allow anything to change. This cumbersome monolith is just a talk fest masquarading as democracy. It is actually a very primitive form of decision making since the only opinions that are heard are those of the candidates. Endless talk, made worse by technology

It isn't about states, or candidates but what is done.

No, the stupidity is that that exists in an eighteenth century system of government designed to never allow anything to change.

An eighteenth century system it may be, but you are missing a critical component to your statement. The U.S. is functioning as a democratic republic, not as a purely democratic state, and was originally designed as a republic state.

* Being a democratic republic retains a set of inalienable rights to the individual that the government cannot remove or violate.

* The People can vote, as individuals, for the candidates that they chose. This is not to be confused with the elitist methods of choosing the candidates present in modern political races; the major parties tend to be selective when choosing their standard bearer, but individuals and minor parties are also welcome to compete.

* The majority cannot remove the limitations set upon the government. (In recent times, subversive elements of society have worked at forcing the will of minority on the mass of majority through shaming, social engineering, and environmental conditioning. This is not to be confused with democratic processes as this is not how the U.S. was set up to be governed.)

* Laws are intended to be created through the people's will by representatives that they elect into office. This means that the candidate is expected to vote in the way that the people elected them to vote. (In the current political environment, everyone knows that the politicians lie about how they stand and vote differently from their stated platform. This is a corruption of the representative republic and the whole lot should be respectively purged for good measure.)

So you see, ParaCletus, that your backward view of the U.S. form of government is not very accurate. The system is designed to allow change, through elective votes from individuals. You must be thinking of a democracy, which accounts for more that half the world governments, whose method of changes come mainly from a majority of elite political groups (of which our political class has also effectively subverted and is attempting to impose their will upon us through corruption and deception). I can see where it seems to be the opposite, but it is not the way it was originally designed.
