Today's Brutal DDoS Attack Is the Beginning of a Bleak Future

William Turton
Gizmodo
Today 1:50pm

This morning a ton of websites and services, including Spotify and Twitter, were unreachable because of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Dyn, a major DNS provider. Details of how the attack happened remain vague, but one thing seems certain. Our internet is frightfully fragile in the face of increasingly sophisticated hacks.

Some think the attack was a political conspiracy, like an attempt to take down the internet so that people wouldn’t be able to read the leaked Clinton emails on Wikileaks. Others think it’s the usual Russian assault. No matter who did it, we should expect incidents like this to get worse in the future. While DDoS attacks used to be a pretty weak threat, we’re entering a new era.

DDoS attacks, at the most basic level, work like this. An attacker sends a flurry of packets, essentially just garbage data, to an intended recipient. In this case, the recipient was Dyn’s DNS servers. The server is overwhelmed with the garbage packets, and can’t handle the incoming connections, eventually slowing down significantly or totally shutting down. In the case of Dyn, it was probably a little more complex than this. Dyn almost certainly has advanced systems for DDoS mitigation, and the people who attacked Dyn (whoever they are) were probably using something more advanced than a PC in their mom’s basement.

Recently, we’ve entered into a new DDoS paradigm. As security blogger Brian Krebs notes, the newfound ability to highjack insecure internet of things devices and turn them into a massive DDoS army has contributed to an uptick in the size and scale of recent DDoS attacks. (We’re not sure if an IoT botnet was what took down Dyn this morning, but it would be a pretty good guess.)

In 2011, hacker collective Anonymous rose to fame with DDoS attacks that pale in comparison to today’s attack on Dyn. Instead of taking out an individual website for short periods of time, hackers were able to take down a major piece of the internet backbone for an entire morning—not once but twice. That’s huge.

Update 4:22 PM EST: Looks like this is probably going to get even worse before it gets any better. Dyn says they are being hit with a third wave of attacks. Dyn told CNBC the attack is “well planned and executed, coming from tens of millions IP addresses at same time.”

Department of Homeland Security launches urgent investigation as massive ongoing series of cyber attacks take down thousands of sites including Amazon, Spotify, Reddit and Twitter

  • Github, SoundCloud and PayPal also reported to be down
  • Some of Amazon's cloud services also believed to have been hit
  • Outage appeared to be primarily affecting web users on the US East Coast
  • Second wave of attacks began around 1PM ET
  • Department of Homeland Security 'investigating all potential causes'
  • The ongoing interruption of its network resulting from a DDoS attack
  • DDoS attacks are a primitive form of hacking using botnets - networks of computers that hackers bring under their control

By Libby Plummer For Mailonline Daily Mail [UK] Published: 08:32 EST, 21 October 2016 Updated: 16:03 EST, 21 October 2016

A massive co-ordinated series of cyber attacks has forced hundreds of major websites from Amazon to Twitter offline across the globe.

The Department of Homeland Security launched an urgent investigation into the crash, amid claims it could be a precursor to an attempt to disrupt the US Presidential election.

Internet service company Dyn, which controls the 'address book' of the internet for dozens of major companies, said that it had suffered its first denial of service (DDoS) attack shortly after 6AM ET (11AM BST), in an attack that mostly affected the east coast of the US.

It confirmed a second attack at 1PM ET, which appeared to be centred on UK servers, and later said 'several' attacks were underway on servers across the globe, with the west coast being particularly badly hit.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible and Gillian Christensen of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the agency was 'investigating all potential causes.'

Political commentor Keith Olbermann even raised the possibility it could be a precursor to an attack on election ay.

'Say, not to panic anybody, but what if the (attacks) today were practice for 11/8 ?' he tweeted.

yeaaaaah.... The DHS never investigated democrats before, why would they start now? the targets are random but nit that random and whats more some of those sites are favored sites by white hats and black hats to discuss things... reddit aint the site that would be targeted for lolz. not in a major op fasion at any rate. no this just looks like an excuse to blame russians and limit conversation...

and i dont thin it matters if somebody does this on election day (another dnc tip off right there) cause the voting machines cant be Ddosed. thats ignorant. the daily mail is ignorant... bad propaganda.

They shut down "a major piece of the internet backbone," not individual sites.

When you enter to vote, are people sitting at their with networked computers checking registration status?

Electronic voting

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Electronic voting (also known as e-voting) is voting using electronic means to either aid or take care of the chores of casting and counting votes. Depending on the particular implementation, e-voting may encompass a range of Internet services, from basic data transmission to full-function online voting through common connectable household devices. Similarly, the degree of automation may vary from simple chores to a complete solution that includes voter registration & authentication, vote input, local or precinct tallying, vote data encryption and transmission to servers, vote consolidation and tabulation, and election administration. A worthy e-voting system must perform most of these tasks while complying with a set of standards established by regulatory bodies, and must also be capable to deal successfully with strong requirements associated with security, accuracy, integrity, swiftness, privacy, auditability, accessibility, cost-effectiveness, scalability and ecological sustainability.

Electronic voting technology can include punched cards, optical scan voting systems and specialized voting kiosks (including self-contained direct-recording electronic voting systems, or DRE). It can also involve transmission of ballots and votes via telephones, private computer networks, or the Internet.

While you're out voting for Trump, your refrigerator, dishwasher, and toaster will be on the internet voting for Gary Johnson, Darrell Castle, and Jill Stein?
