French company Alstom unveiled the first-ever passenger train powered completely by hydrogen at this week’s Berlin InnoTrans trade show. The hydrogen train or “hydrail” will be put into service on Germany’s Buxtehude-Bremervörde-Bremerhaven-Cuxhaven line in Lower Saxony by December 2017. After two years in development, the “Coradia iLint” train offers a zero-emissions alternative to Germany’s existing fleet of diesel trains, thanks to a roof-mounted tank of hydrogen fuel. The hydrail is an electric train operating with a hydrogen fuel tank on its roof that powers a fuel cell to generate electricity. This train, and others like it to come in the future, are part of a big push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. The Coradia iLint will be the first of its kind to carry passengers along the railway, as most other innovations in hydrail technology have been focused on cargo transport. “Alstom is proud to launch a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean transportation which will complete its Coradia range of regional trains,” said Alstom chairman and CEO Henri Poupart-Lafarge, in a statement. “It shows our ability to work in close collaboration with our customers and develop a train in only two years.” Due to its electric engine, the Coradia iLint is much quieter than traditional diesel trains. Coradia iLint is a new CO2-emission-free regional train and alternative to diesel power. It is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, its only emission being steam and condensed water while operating with a low level of noise.

And it doesn't accomplish squat if fossil fuels are still used to produce the hydrogen to begin with... Greenhouse gas emissions are merely shifted from the train to the hydrogen production plant...
Did you know that you can drive throughout Denmark on hydrogen produced from renewable energy? And I'm guessing you've never heard about this- US media is ignoring the Hydrogen Revolution- and that is what it is Have you heard about Honda's Swindon UK Solar Hydrogen plant- later this year their Hydrogen car comes out and soon they will introduce their Home Solar Hydrogen system https://www.hydrogencarsnow.com/index.php/hydrogen-fueling-stations/honda-smart-hydrogen-fueling-station-unveiled-in-japan/ One would think these oil free green alternatives would be of interest to the US since it allows total energy independence. But maybe Washington DC doesn't want that.
Well good for Denmark... but that's still a rather small country, even by European standards... Globally, over 95% of hydrogen production is still achieved through the use of fossil fuels... So the fact remains: merely converting our vehicles to hydrogen fuel cells does not provide assurance that clean, renewable/sustainable energy sources will be used to produce the hydrogen.

Just because something has been done a certain way in the past does not mean that is the way it must be done in the future. In the past, most cookies were made with lard.
