We all know that some states provide more individual liberties to their residents than others, but have you ever wondered how free your state really is? The Libertarian think tank known as Cato, can give you an answer to that question. They recently published a list that ranks each state based on how free their residents are, which is updated annually. Unsurprisingly, the most left leaning states were often found to have comparatively little freedom. New York was ranked the least free, followed by California, Hawaii, and New Jersey. However, several conservative states also ranked quite poorly, including Mississippi, Kentucky, and West Virginia. This year New Hampshire lived up to its state motto, “Live Free or Die”. It was ranked as the most free state, followed by Alaska, Oklahoma, Indiana, and South Dakota. The economic policies of these states seemed to have the most significant bearing on how the states were ranked. New York was criticized in the report for having a tax burden that is twice as high as the national average. Cato predicts it will remain the least free state for “many years to come.” New Hampshire on the other hand, had one of the lowest tax burdens, second only to Alaska. Of course, the financial policies of our state governments weren’t the only metrics used to determine how free each state is. Personal freedoms like gun rights, marriage rights, and the right to indulge in drug use and gambling played a large role in the study. I must admit being from Texas their state regulations have gotten out of control in the last 10 plus years. I know some of it has been federal government guidelines but damn they need to stop and let the construction guys catch up! Even the inspectors can't keep up and if they can not keep up how the hell are the construction companies going to keep up? Texas is going the way of all large population states. More over crowding progressive morons to go willie nillie with laws because it makes them feel better! BTW if you haven't noticed I despise progressives for the damage they have done to the world!
The rankings are very different based on the type of freedom. For example, Texas ranks 49th, almost dead last, in PERSONAL freedom, while several of the northern states that rank low overall on "freedom" rank quite high on PERSONAL freedom. Those states have higher business regulation and taxes, but they leave individuals alone. Personal freedom is certainly the kind I value most. New Mexico sits right next to Texas, and is number 1 in personal freedom. I'd much rather live in a state where the state wasn't going to bother me for what I personally do, than to live in a state where businesses are left free to do as they please but the cops will be riding my ass for whatever.
That's a shame - Texas used to be a state where people were proud of their independence. Both Nevada and Alaska still look pretty good though. Interesting. Will study this later after I get back home.
