Some lawmakers in New Jersey have proposed a bill that would have police in the Garden State cracking down even harder on distracted drivers.

And that means some big fines for something as simple as eating while you're behind the wheel. However, not everybody's on board with the proposed bill.

New Jersey has been involved in a constant battle to crackdown on distracted driving. Texting or talking on cell phones while driving is already illegal but some legislators believe that's not enough.

Penalties would be up to $400 for a first offense and a license suspension for multiple offenses. That may seem a little severe but perhaps not when you consider the consequences of distracted driving.

As expected the response from New Jersey drivers was mixed and passionate.

Similar bills introduced in the past have failed mostly because the elected officials couldn't agree on how severe they should be. And talking to New Jersey drivers, that may be an issue this time as well.

The assemblyman says several headlines are misleading saying drinking a cup of coffee behind the wheel or eating would be punishable offensives. He says the hope is to get people to pay attention and hopefully save lives.

I guess they think that those cup holders that manufacturers install in cars are just a decoration.

More revenue enhancement falsely being promoted as "public safety."

Has anybody ever aspired to someday live in New Jersey?

Grand,

Weren't there laws in that "very conservative state of NY" that you thought it was ridiculous you had to enforce?

From what I have read, you aren't allowed to pump your own gas in NJ.

Kookifornia, NJ and NY are three of the worse... and I, as a 19+ year cop, removed 40+ of my firearms from NYS before April 1st of 2014 and moved them into a very expensive gun vault in another state, so I wouldn't have been faced with the hypocritical act of arresting someone for a firearm possession like one I owned... and I was EXEMPT from the nysStupidAct, as a Leo... because I didn't retire until August of 2014... and i loath hipocracy

THEN, in August of 2014, I moved away from everyone I worked with, everyone I loved... every blood relative I knew, every friend I had... AND I LEFT THAT MOTHER FUCKING TYRANNICAL ASSHOLE STATE.

It doesn't happen often, but every time I drive through that asshole state, I've noticed that. I normally only go to NJ to see the Jets play when I get free tickets. Last season I was in MetLife Stadium for the Jets Vs Eagles game.
