Maybe Americans really don't care. The Roman Empire was a pretty good gig for residents of Rome. Crushing out lives on the Empire, importing slaves - it made people who otherwise would just have been peasant farmers - like the Italians fell back into being once the Empire ended - this elevated the people in and around Rome to levels of pleasure and ease otherwise impossible to attain. America's Empire is not good for American freedom, but there is a great deal of prosperity here, and upward mobility for those who will serve the Empire (assuming they don't get killed or crippled in the process).
