Title: Pope Francis: ‘If I Speak of Islamic Violence, I Must Speak of Catholic Violence’

In a press conference Sunday, Pope Francis appeared to suggest that all religions are equally prone to violence and that Islam and Christianity are the same in this regard.

When asked by a journalist about the “barbarous assassination of Fr. Jacques Hamel” in northern France who was clearly “killed in the name of Islam” last Tuesday, the Pope replied that he doesn’t like speaking about Islamic violence because there is plenty of Christian violence as well.

In the brief press conference aboard the papal plane returning from Krakow, Poland, the Pope said that every day when he browses the newspapers, he sees violence in Italy perpetrated by Christians: “this one who has murdered his girlfriend, another who has murdered the mother-in-law… and these are baptized Catholics! There are violent Catholics!”

“If I speak of Islamic violence, I must speak of Catholic violence,” Francis said. “And no, not all Muslims are violent, not all Catholics are violent. It is like a fruit salad; there’s everything.”

In his response, Pope Francis seemed to suggest that jihadists killing innocent people in the name of Allah is not significantly different from a Catholic who kills his girlfriend or mother-in-law, presumably for motives unrelated to the Christian religion.

Francis acknowledged that there are “violent persons of this religion [Islam],” immediately adding that “in pretty much every religion there is always a small group of fundamentalists. Fundamentalists. We have them.”

The Pope asserted moreover that he knows how Muslims think, and that deep down they desire peace and harmony just as Christians do.

“I had a long conversation with the imam, the Grand Imam of the Al-Azhar University, and I know how they think,” he said. “They seek peace, encounter.”

“I do not believe it is right to identify Islam with violence. This is not right or true,” he said.

The Pope insisted that the Islamic State does not draw its ideology from the religion of Islam, but appeals rather to the emptiness of young people and a love for violence.

“How many young people, how many young people of our Europe, whom we have left empty of ideals, who do not have work… they take drugs, alcohol, or go there to enlist in fundamentalist groups,” he said. “One can say that the so-called ISIS, but it is an Islamic State which presents itself as violent . . . because when they show us their identity cards, they show us how on the Libyan coast they slit the Egyptians’ throats or other things.”

“But this is a fundamentalist group which is called ISIS… but you cannot say, I do not believe, that it is true or right that Islam is terrorist,” he said.

The Pope concluded by suggesting that Islamic terrorism does not stem from any violence inherent to Islam itself, but rather from other non-religious motives, such as poverty.

“Terrorism grows when there are no other options, and when the center of the global economy is the god of money and not the person,” Francis said. “You have cast out the wonder of creation — man and woman — and you have put money in its place. This is a basic terrorism against all of humanity! Think about it!” he said. (1 image)

He has a point, though not the one he is making directly.

The problem is that people - generically, all people - have no credibility when they are hypocrites. They can wax on loud and long about anything, but their listeners will be thinking of the bad things THEY have done.

The only to get past that is to not be human.

His Holiness is an idiot.

A government strong enough to impose your standards is strong enough to ban them.

I agree.

Which is why I also get annoyed when white men feel the need to complain of Muslim men having strong attraction to white women, when white males are notorious for going overseas to poor Asian countries to have sex with the girls.

It's the same in my opinion

It is not the same, because the white men who go have sex with Asians pay the Asians money and then leave. And if the Asian decides she doesn't want to continue the evening with the white man, she picks up and leaves. Maybe she doesn't get paid, but that's it.

Muslims beat women to death for disobeying them, and they saw off their heads.

There is a fundamental difference between men seeking out prostitutes and paying for them, and men who hack and murder their way through women who defy them.

Prostitution is a voluntary, consensual activity. (And where it isn't, it is still not generally a violent activity, from the perspective of the john and the hooker). If the male makes it violent, non-consensually, it's a crime.

In huge swathes of the world, there is no "consent" in a Muslim marriage, and there is no ability for the woman to escape a bad one.

Another key difference: when white men go and sleep with Asian women, for hire, they are not going over there AS Christians asserting a religious authority to engage in transactional sex.

When Muslim men beat and suppress females, they do so on the authority of imams' and mullahs' interpretation of the Law of Islam - they do so AS Muslims, asserting their Allah-given authority.

When men sleeping with Asian prostitutes is not a religious act. A Muslim man raping a non-Muslim slave or sawing off a head or beating his wife IS an EXPLICITLY religious act.

The distinctions are important.

I said 'Muslim' because I couldn't be arsed to bother typing out the distinction. I meant men, really, of Pakistani and Middle Eastern/North African origin having a lust for white women and white men complaining of that, when a lot of white men equally have a strong lust for Asian women.

A lot of white men overseas to SEA DO engage in sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of underage girls or women.

I know there's no religion in the latter

The religious difference is the key, though. Evil is evil, and men and women do evil. When evil is done as a systematized part of God itself, it is much more intractable.
