(AP Photo/Ronald Zak) ( ) Secretary of State John Kerry said in Vienna on Friday that air conditioners and refrigerators are as big of a threat to life as the threat of terrorism posed by groups like the Islamic State. The Washington Examiner reported that Kerry was in Vienna to amend the 1987 Montreal Protocol that would phase out hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, from basic household and commercial appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, and inhalers. “As we were working together on the challenge of [ISIS] and terrorism,” Kerry said. “It’s hard for some people to grasp it, but what we–you–are doing here right now is of equal importance because it has the ability to literally save life on the planet itself.” Kerry said that most of the substances banned in the Montreal Protocol have increased the use of HFCs and claimed that the coolant was thousands of times more potent than CO2. He added that the increase of HFCs has led to the trend of global climate change. “The use of hydrofluorocarbons is unfortunately growing,” Kerry said. “Already, the HFCs use in refrigerators, air conditioners, and other items are emitting an entire gigaton of carbon dioxide-equivalent pollution into the atmosphere annually. Now, if that sounds like a lot, my friends, it’s because it is. It’s the equivalent to emissions from nearly 300 coal-fired power plants every single year.” Members of the Montreal Protocol have met their obligations and have aided in the shrinking of the hole in the ozone, as well as created jobs and improved the quality of life, Kerry said. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy was also present at the negotiations and is serving as the lead negotiator for the United States. McCarthy has said that her goal is to enact the HFC agreement by the end of the year. New EPA rules along with the global deal would band HFCs in the United States and push for alternative chemicals for use in appliances. The negotiations are part of President Obama’s climate agenda to combat global climate change.

Ain't no big deal... Just about any gas can be used as a refrigerant: Ammonia, CO2, Methane, Butane, Hydrogen, Helium, Nitrogen, etc. etc. etc.
Thats good lets use ammonia for residential and light commercial ac and refrig appliances! LOL We can end western populations pretty fast! We can all move right back into the 3rd world mode.

Kerry went up the chain of command and pulled strings to get another purple heart citation. Three purple hearts hang in the walls of his office to impress visitors. Meh... it's no more dangerous than using natural gas, which is why some nervous nellies have all electric stoves, ovens, hot water and furnaces/baseboard heat. But if you're antsy about that stuff, I'm sure you could install an ammonia detector just like they have for smoke alarms & carbon monoxide.

Actually its much worse than ng. You can breath ng and not die. If ng builds up enough it can be explosive. It takes very little ammonia to harm you permanently. If ammonia was viable for residential or light commercial work it would be implemented. Businessmen are not stupid but can be greedy at times.
The entire argument over this ozone layer matter was about chlorine, and that it would affect the equilibrium between ozone being created and destroyed. Chlorine is dense, but these environazis still suggested it would be elevated to the stratosphere by winds. The whole ozone layer went away when these folks went with "climate change" as their latest crusade. If ammonia makes you soil your panties, then use some other substance as a refrigerent: methane, butane, propane, acetone, alcohol, etc. etc. The point is, there are plenty of substitutes available. Hell, you can even use water as a refrigerant.
The problem is climate change is bs and politically pushed to sucker the weak minded people.
It's all a part of unsustainable globalization. The Earth's resources are finite, and excessive growth & development pollute and damage our environment. Frankly, I think "climate change" is too feeble to describe the dire conditions that we'll be facing. Here in America, the "American Dream" is dead... our cities are headed for overpopulated, disease-infested, malnourished slums... Gated suburban communities won't provide any protection from the spread of the squalid filth & crime.. And Trump's Wall will be a totally ineffective bandaid... I personally believe that it's already too late to avoid this fate... But if they want to label their meager efforts "climate change", I got no problem with that... Afterall, it's the unregulated "free market" that's the root cause of this putrid contamination... and there's no reason to think that the unregulated "free market" will divert this tsunami of global decay.

I doubt water could ever be used as a refrigerant. A useful refrigerant needs to be a gas at ambient temperatures and then easily converted to a liquid through compression. That's what was originally used before GM & DuPont began producing freon in the 1930s. And in fact, is still in use in large scale industrial applications (food processing industry) because it's highy efficient.
The biggest drawback is safety concerns due to leakage. But it is non-flammable and lighter-than-air, so it should dissipate quickly in well ventilated areas. Plus today's manufacturing quality control is vastly superior to the 1910s, '20s & '30s when residential ammonia refrigeration was in use... so there should be less leakage than there was back then.

I did, however, gain a little insight when I worked for an A/C factory back in the '80s...
Other engineers focus their entire career in this area (not just design and manufacturing, but also the various A/C-refrigeration repair companies for residential and commercial systems)
ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) has something like 50,000 members... I'm sure they already figured out what refrigerant they'll switch to if HFCs are restricted.
