They are located in mass transportation centers all over the USA & Europe. Often, in Europe, there are special locations such as the postoffice that also facilitates the use of publick telephones.
To answer your question, they are on their way out with modern cellular technology.
Through the 90's, I was involved in some aggressive technical design about publick phones because of the Bell breakups which lead to so-called 'baby-bells.' The work lead into international recognition with some socialist nations buying products for publick payphone systems. We even created methods of capturing "too many rings" and "busy signaling" to recoup revenues on the publick phone system.
It was too cool! I designed voice recognition circuits and ways to deteckt the entry of coins already inthe box (publick payphone box) from the original insertion of coins whether a dime, two nickels, quarters, etc.
Yeah, some of us really KNOW where we were and where we are going. The future is not pretty because of these international conglomerates that are slow to accept change AND THEN wipe out those that have designed, manufactured and supported alternative approaches @the tyme of technology revolution.
The US government could care less about any of us for our accomplishments throughout our working lives other than one singular goal: tax money.
