Tell me what you know about AR-15's. Which ones would you guys recommend?
The AR-15 is manufactured by Colt. When you say "AR-15" I assume you mean "rifles similar in design and function to the AR-15", which opens the selection quite a bit.
First, price. Under $1,000 or over $1000? You can find many under $1,000 ($700-$900) which will get you a basic direct gas impingement(DI) rifle. I've fired my son's LE6900 ($899) and it's a nice quality rifle from Colt. The LE6920 is a full featured rifle that goes for around $1300.
But I've seen a trend from manufacturers moving away from DI and offering a next generation gas piston system. The rifle runs cooler and cleaner and is consequently more reliable. But it's a $500 premium.
I assume you're right-handed and don't need ambidextrous controls. My checklist would be:
-- Short-stroke gas piston operated -- 1:7 twist, chrome-lined barrel -- 2 MOA accuracy (standard for a battle rifle) -- Adjustable stock -- Removable iron sights -- QD sling attachments -- Full-length picatinny top rail (Mil Spec 1913) -- Additional rails at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock.
