Tell me what you know about AR-15's. Which ones would you guys recommend?
" Tell me what you know about AR-15's. " That could take up a lot of space. Suffice to say that they are fine weapons.
" Which ones would you guys recommend? " Lot of choices. Colt, Bushmaster, Armalite, Knights Armament, Daniel Defense, DPMS, Rock River Arms, Windham Weaponry, Ruger, S&W, Sig Sauer, Double Star, and many others.
Be sure to get a flat top upper. You can take the carry handle off, and mount a scope. If you go that route, get flip up sights, in case your scope fails. Otherwise, you will have to reattach the carry handle. Mostly you will find them with 16" bbls. Everyone is infatuated with the shorter bbl, more tacticool. I prefer the longer bbl 20". Gives a longer sight radius with irons, more accurate, and the extra 4" will give more vel & energy on target. Plus with the 20", you can attach a bayonet. I would never want to use that, but in combat, I would never discard an option. For mostly long range use, get a 24" flat top. You will see a variety of bbl twist rates. Best go with 1/9. That will give the best performance with most ammo. Twist rate is very important.
If you buy one, buy at least 1,000 rd case of ammo, get brass cases, avoid the Russian steel case stuff. Get plenty of mags, and a spare parts set. Also, get a good set of web gear with pouches to carry your mags, and a sling for the rifle. Don't forget good cleaning gear. Don't get carried away with all the add on stuff. Some guys want to hang everything including a kitchen sink & microwave on the forearm. Keep it simple.
With AR's, you will get a variety of opinions, everyone has their own. Try to find a dealer that has a range where you can try one out. If possible, maybe you have some friends that have them, and know their shit, that can give you a lot of info. Search the net, there are plenty of forums dedicated to firearms, and specifically AR's. Try Fal Files Forums. You will find a wealth of info. They are a pretty good bunch, ask a question, they will be very helpful.
I am sure you will get some good advice right here at LF.
