Title: Southern Baptists see 9th year of membership decline

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Southern Baptist Convention lost more than 200,000 members in 2015 — the ninth straight year of decline for the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

Membership stands at 15.3 million, down from 15.5 million in 2014, according to denomination statistics released this week. Baptisms also fell by more than 10,000 to just a little more than 295,000.

Baptisms are an important measure for the Nashville-based denomination because of its strong commitment to evangelism.

After the numbers were announced, some denominational leaders emphasized the positive news that the number of Southern Baptist churches increased last year by 294, mostly due to new churches started by SBC pastors.

But Executive Committee President and CEO Frank Page refused to put a positive spin on the declines, exclaiming in a news release, “God help us all! In a world that is desperate for the message of Christ, we continue to be less diligent in sharing the Good News.”

Mainline Protestant and Roman Catholic churches started to experience significant declines in the 1960s and 1970s, said Mark Chaves, a professor of sociology at Duke University who studies religious trends. Significant decline for many more conservative Protestant denominations has become apparent only in the last decade or so.

“There’s just a national trend of declining religious involvement, and conservative churches are not immune to it, as they thought they were for a while,” he said.

Comparing membership numbers across denominations can be difficult, since different groups report them differently. Chaves said he relies primarily on attendance estimates from large national surveys. The Southern Baptists say their average weekly attendance was 5.6 million last year, a decrease of about 97,000 from 2014.

Some denominations have stopped publicly reporting membership numbers altogether rather than admit their churches are shrinking, but the Southern Baptists survey their churches each year and release the results.

“That’s because we believe the admission of a problem is the first thing needed to correct it,” Page said.

He expects the numbers to bring calls for a new emphasis on evangelism and discipleship at the denomination’s annual meeting next week in St. Louis.

“We live in an anti-institutional, anti-church age, where people are opting out of organized religious activities,” Page said. He thinks new types of churches will arise to meet that trend.

“God help us all! In a world that is desperate for the message of Christ, we continue to be less diligent in sharing the Good News.”

Wrong! God expects us to be involved and not just attend church and say Amen. The churches in this country have enough members if everyone would stand together the direction of this country could be changed over night. God helps those who help themselves.

I do not go to church every time the doors are opened, but I love Jesus Christ. I am only human and fail Him daily. I believe Jesus is the Son of God, was born of a virgin, was crucified on a cross, died for my sins and rose from the dead and that He loves us dearly, and is faithful to forgive us of our sins. But He says that if you deny me in front of your friends I will deny you in front of my Father. Can I get an Amen!

Willie, do you believe in God and His Son, Jesus Christ?

Willie believes in reverse racism... and lacks the ability to have thick skin. This leaves him self important towards your confederate flag waving or your religious nativity scene on public property.

If something offends that piece of shit (like my language), he will do the libtarded thing and support laws or site regulations that limit people's freedom to fly a flag, express religious beliefs or the most important freedom of all, swearing.

I used to... but evangelical christian bigotry & hatred convinced me that they're just an ancient and outdated superstition intended to brainwash people into obeying cult opinions.

I think the new(relative terms) fade is to go non denominational. It start at least from the 80's and has gotten bigger.

I think what you see is Christians seeing mega churches and CEO type leaders in million dollar houses send money to foreign land while people around them are in need. People just get cynical after they grown up. I think it tends to hit in your 40's.

BTW I am a Christian and I have a strong faith but find big organized religion has been hijacked by non believers and crazy people.

Most of the people in America seem to have lost their mind. It's like living in a parallel universe that has veered sharply left at the last fork in the road,.
