KNOXVILLE - (KNOXVILLE) Authorities have charged an Oak Ridge woman with first-degree murder in the death of her almost 3-month old daughter after the infant died in April of a drug overdose. Heather Renee Keylon, 31, was arrested and booked into the Knox County Jail on Saturday. She is being held in lieu of $1 million bond. Keylon faces six counts, including felony murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect, in the death of her daughter, Skylar Brewer, according to a Knox County grand jury indictment returned March 8.

Addicts need treatment. Her medicine did not cause the problem. The mother’s addiction to drugs was the problem but maybe not the root cause. Had there been no addiction, there would have been no suboxone. Would the mother have given the baby something else just as dangerous? This is an unknown. The mother’s addiction may not even have been the root cause of the problem. What caused her addition may have been the root cause. Having the drugs illegal did not stop the process in her problem. Would making the drugs legal help or hurt more with her problem? Who knows. Could drugs being legal and more accessible have caused her problem to develop sooner. Again, who knows. Lots of questions and no answers … Do you have any?

Do you have any? I know that the answer is not that we should no longer treat patients who are dependent on opiates, lest they feed their medicine to babies. Beyond that, only more questions - such as: did she drug her baby because he was again showing symptoms of neonatal abstinence syndrome, or simply because he was being a baby? A government strong enough to impose your standards is strong enough to ban them. A toxicology report says the baby had suboxone in her blood when she died. Suboxone is typically used to treat patients who are dependent on opiates.
