The first years as a buzzards up colonel entertaing dignitaries in Washington who wanted to say they had met him. After retiring from the service with pay, he futzed around as a subversive U. S. Senator for many years. After graduation from the Naval Academy near the bottom of his class, he should have been put to work in a navy gally in charge of making mashed potatos. In stead, since his father and grandfather were Admirals, he was placed in a series of airplane cockpits, some of which he destroyed.
