Donald Trump began his first day as the all-but-rubber-stamped Republican presidential nominee by declaring that his likely opponent Hillary Clinton 'should suffer' for putting classified documents on a private email server as secretary of state.

'She should not be allowed to run in the election,' Trump said in a phone-in interview on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' program the morning after his chief rival Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out of the race.

'She should suffer like other people have suffered who have done far less than she has,' Trump declared.

'Bernie Sanders said she's got poor judgment. And she does. You look at the email scandal. She shouldn't even be allowed to run.'

Trump reflected on Cruz's stunning reversal on Tuesday night, pulling out of the White House contest after a 53-37 drubbing in the Indiana primary.

Trump said he may soon abandon his ironclad policy of not raising money for the presidential contest, but insisted that he would only be asking big-ticket donors to contribute to the Republican National Committee – not to his campaign.

'I’m going to be making a decision over the next week,' he said, opening the door even to the possibility that he might embrace the assistance of outside super PACs.

'The question is – I do love self-funding. I don’t want anything for myself, but we do need money for the party.'

'Do I want to sell a couple of buildings and self-fund? I don't know that I want to do that necessarily, but I really won't be asking for money for myself,' he said.

Trump said he's mulling the question of who his vice presidential running-mate will be, saying that while 'it's too soon' to talk about specific names, he was leaning toward choosing a traditional politician who can help him interface with Congress.

'I have the business – let’s call them – talents, and I think I'll probably go the political route,' he said.

'Somebody that can help me with legislation and somebody that can help me get things passed and somebody that's been friends with the senators and congressmen and all so we don’t have to go the executive order route as much as Obama did, you know, where he can’t get anything approved so he just keeps signing executive orders.'

Trump confirmed later on ABC's 'Good Morning America' that he would limit himself to picking a Republican.

Reflecting on the need for party unity, he said on 'Morning Joe' that 'I don't think it’s imperative that the entire party come together. I don't want everybody. I don't even want certain people that were extraordinarily nasty. Let them go their own way.'

'I've been saying for a long time that there are some people that I almost don’t want their endorsement, Republicans — I really don't,” he said.

'Because it was too rough, and they were too nasty, and I don't think it’s going to matter, frankly.'

Asked if he wanted Cruz's endorsement, Trump paused.

'Well, I think it would be nice,' he said.

He needed someone he could count on to be as destructively subversive as he is and carry it out with humorous defiance and feminine showmanship. Obama and Hellery are one and the same.
