A Sierra Leone man already facing deportation on felony charges was arrested early Saturday morning in Springfield after allegedly firing at a Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit, according to State Police.

Police said they received a report of Mohamed Fofanah, 35, driving just 10 miles per hour on Interstate 91 southbound at 12:15 a.m.

The vehicle he was driving was wanted for hitting three separate vehicles in traffic moments earlier, according to David Procopio, a spokesman for the State Police.

Fofanah exited the highway and abandoned his vehicle after crashing again, then walked toward Main Street, Procopio said.

K-9 Trooper David Stucenski and his canine partner, Frankie, found him. When Fofanah refused to stop and surrender his weapon, Stucenski deployed the dog, police said in a statement.

Fofanah allegedly fired one shot but didn’t hit the officer or the dog, who was able to subdue him, according to the statement.

He was treated for minor injuries at Baystate Medical Center and is being charged with attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, various firearm violations, leaving the scene of property damage, and mistreatment of a police dog.

Upon further investigation after his arrest, Fofanah was found to be in the country illegally and to have multiple felony charges against him in Connecticut, Procopio said.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against him while he remains in custody at the Hampshire County Jail and House of Correction and awaits deportation, according to Procopio.

Police are allowed to shoot dogs that threaten them, but anyone shooting at a police dog that is aggressively charging at them is charged with a crime.

Actually, shooting a police dog carries the same charges as shooting an actual police officer.

Some animals are more equal than others.

Stating a fact is "animosity"?

Federal Law Now Protects Canine Cops

For those tempted to punch a horse during a demonstration or kick a narcotics dog sniffing at your bag, the U.S. government has a new message: Keep your paws off or you will go to jail.

Harming these four-legged law agents is now a federal offense.

Under the Federal Law Enforcement Animal Protection Act, which went into effect this week, anyone convicted of purposely assaulting, maiming, or killing federal law enforcement animals such as police dogs and horses could be fined at least $1,000 and spend up to 10 years in prison. Previously, the animals were covered by a variety of state, rather than federal, laws.

Kid Shoots Retired Police Dog, Gets 23 Years in Prison. Cops Shoot your Dog and get Paid Vacation

It should not surprise you that the police in 2014 get away with slaughtering many household dogs, receiving paid administration leave instead of prison sentences.

In one of the most recent cases, an officer shot a dog that could in no way injure the cop, because there was a car window in between the cop and the dog. The cop killed the dog by shooting through the car window.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

It is estimated that hundreds if not thousands of dogs are shot and killed by police every year in the US.

There is of course no ‘official’ statistic because officials don’t quite care for statistics that prove the system to be immoral, and there are no advocacy groups that represent pets against police aggression.

Recently, a 17 yr old boy from Florida was sentenced to 23 years, a huge portion of his life behind bars for shooting a police dog. Correction – a retired police dog. He was only 16 years old at the time of the crime.

In this particular situation however, the 17 yr old had allegedly committed a burglary on a state trooper’s house, and he shot his dog inside the house. There is nothing morally okay about that in any way, but to send him to prison for a huge part of his young life, and seek no rehabilitation, is gross and immoral, and that is the very reason the US has the highest amount and rate of citizens incarcerated of any nation or empire in the history of the world.

*****

Then of course you have the cases where a cop kills a police dog - well, you know the drill.

If a Kid Can Get 23 Years in Prison for Killing a Dog, What About Cops Who Kill Dogs?

"We never see this kind of moral outrage from the state when police shoot dogs during SWAT raids and serving search warrants," Fleischman tells New Times. "If the state is going to give a child 23 years for shooting a dog, then there should be some moral consistency when police shoot dogs."

Although currently overshadowed by the issue of police shooting humans, dog shootings by police have gained attention in recent years. Official numbers are not kept by government agencies, but activists say the number could be as high as one dog killed by a cop every 98 minutes. That comes out to about 14 per day -- 5,110 per year.
