She doesn't have to perjure herself. She can just go get an abortion at will, and that is that. And the law will REMAIN that way too, unless the rape and incest exceptions are allowed in. It isn't that they're right, in you opinion or mine. But in the opinion of the vast majority of Americans, those two situations require an exception to any law restricting abortion. So if those situations are not carved out, you'll never get the people of this country to agree to stop abortion. With those exceptions, you can get a lot closer to a majority that will. Should we have firebombed civilians and nuked citizens in World War II? Should we maintain nuclear weapons today, when their use is purely retributive, against soft civilian targets, to inflict mass caualties? Those were, and are, the tools at our disposal to bring the mess to a speedy end and to keep the peace. Likewise, if you really want to end abortion, Trump's approach is the only way to start that has any hope of winning. Once the principle that abortion can be restricted is established, and abortion at will is pushed back, you'll save a lot of lives and can concentrate on the harder cases. If you take an absolutist, purist, hard-right position that is held by 10% of the electorate, it means that you'll just always lose, and not be able to save anybody. Trump's position stays within the limits of the possible. The absolutist position renders any progress impossible. If Trump's position were the endpoint, it would be an unacceptable goal. But as a starting point, a place where he can get political traction to start to move the ball, it's the only one that will work. I'm for winning battles for a change. To paraphrase Evita, better to win by admitting some sin, as in the bombing campaigns of World War II, than to lose with a halo.
