Religion Title: Vice Presidential nominee's LDS rant against two-party "dolts": A word on voting from Scott Bradley himself To the editor: Recently, Geoff vonGermeten relegated me to “cult” status. He mistakenly stated that I did not vote in the last presidential election. While I did not vote for either Democrat or Republican because both candidate’s well documented historic positions on such critical issues as military adventurism, abortion, government-mandated health care, same-sex marriage, economic policy, climate change, internationalism, etc., made their potential administrations essentially indiscernible, all of Utah’s electoral votes went to the Republican. He laments that 11 million Republicans nation-wide did not vote in that election, and thereby threw the election to Mr. Obama. Perhaps, in future elections, those disenfranchised people hope for more of a choice than an echo. He refers to Doctrine and Covenants 98, wherein God endorses the United States Constitution, saying that “whatsoever is more or less than this cometh of evil,” and the admonition to seek out and uphold “honest men and wise men,” and “good men and wise men,” and “whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil.” While there are many ostensibly honest and good men, “wise” men are mentioned twice, reinforcing the importance of selecting “wise” men. Fortunately, in Doc & Cov 101:77-80 God informs us that He “established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose . . .” Apparently, the principles brought forth by those “wise” men are what defines their wisdom. Rare are such individuals today! But, if we can find somebody that strictly abides in those principles, we are justified in supporting them! In regards to Joseph Smith’s 1844 “third party” bid for the U.S. presidency, and the Saints’ unwillingness to vote for the dolts offered in their day by the existing two party system, it was stated in Nauvoo’s Times and Seasons (the church’s principle publication): “ ... we shall have the satisfaction of knowing that we have acted conscientiously, and have used our best judgment. And if we have to throw away our votes, we had better do so upon a worthy rather than an unworthy individual who might make use of the weapon we put in his hand to destroy us.” I wholeheartedly endorse and embrace the above-noted political counsel, and fervently pray for the day that it sheds its “cult” status and becomes “mainstream” so that we may restore the blessings of liberty and proper government that were bequeathed to us at such great cost. Joseph Smith said: “It is our duty to concentrate all our influence to make popular that which is sound and good, and unpopular that which is unsound. ‘Tis right, politically, for a man who has influence to use it. … From henceforth I will maintain all the influence I can get.” It’s about learning and applying correct principles!
