It was really quite stupid to insist publicly upon being a Communist in 1950s America. For the underlying philosophy itself was unworkable and untrue AND you got persecuted for it. The only reason to cling to a hated religion and suffer persecution for it is if there really IS your God behind it, and he really WILL eventually reward you for your longsuffering patience. Otherwise you're just like some guy who refuses to pay taxes, drive the speed limit or stop pissing in public: you're just going to get beaten up and jailed by the police a lot, because you won't obey the social laws.
