Wisconsin's right-to-work law, championed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker as he was mounting his run for president, was struck down Friday as violating the state constitution.

Attorney General Brad Schimel, also a Republican, promised to appeal the decision and said he was confident it would not stand, noting that no similar law has been struck down in any other state. Schimel has not decided whether to seek an immediate suspension of the ruling while the appeal is pending, spokesman Johnny Koremenos said.

"We are confident Wisconsin's freedom-to-work law is constitutional and will ultimately be upheld," Walker wrote on Twitter.

Three unions filed the lawsuit last year shortly after Walker signed the bill into law. Right-to-work laws prohibit businesses and unions from reaching agreements that require all workers, not just union members, to pay union dues. Twenty-five other states have such laws.

The unions argued that Wisconsin's law was an unconstitutional seizure of union property since unions now must extend benefits to workers who don't pay dues. Dane County Circuit Judge William Foust agreed.

He said the law amounts to the government taking union funds without compensation since under the law unions must represent people who don't pay dues. That presents an existential threat to unions, Foust wrote.

"While (union) losses today could be characterized by some as minor, they are not isolated and the impact of (the law) over time is threatening to the unions' very economic viability," he wrote.

Foust noted that no other state court had struck down a right-to-work law on those grounds, but said he wasn't obligated to follow other states.

Republicans who backed the law dismissed the ruling, saying it will be reversed.

"Once again, a liberal Dane County judge is trying to legislate from the bench," Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said in a statement. "No one should be forced to join a union or pay union dues as a condition of employment."

The law's Democratic supporters hailed the decision as a victory for the middle class and working families.

"The extreme right-wing Republican agenda has been incredibly harmful to working people and businesses inWisconsin," said Democratic Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca.

Three unions — Machinists Local Lodge 1061 in Milwaukee, the Wisconsin AFL-CIO chapter and United Steelworkers District 2 in Menasha — brought the lawsuit. Erin Mediros, an attorney representing all three unions, didn't immediately respond to a voicemail Friday.

Phil Neuenfeldt, president of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, said the ruling was a "needed check on Scott Walker's attacks on working families."

"Right to work has always been unjust, now it's proven unconstitutional," he said.

Supporters of right-to-work laws say they give workers the freedom to choose whether to join a union. Opponents say the laws weaken unions by depriving them of the dues from workers who choose not to pay them, resulting in lower wages and fewer employee rights. They also say the Republican-backed law is intended to undermine unions' political power because unions tend to vote Democrat.

In 2014 the Indiana Supreme Court rejected two nearly identical challenges to that state's right-to-work law. Those lawsuits alleged that the law unconstitutionally required unions to provide services to nonunion workers without compensation.

The Wisconsin attorney general argued the law doesn't take anything from the unions since it technically doesn't remove any money currently in their accounts.

Walker launched his run for president just months after signing the law, and frequently mentioned it while campaigning. Months after taking office in 2011, Walker also signed a law that effectively ended collective bargaining for public sector workers.

Ummm, if the basis for the striking down of the law was that it violated WISCONSIN'S constitution, it wouldn't be relevant that no similar law had been stricken in any other state, as no other state has Wisconsin's constitution. It's a pretty desperate argument by the AG.

So here's a thought - appeal to the Federal Supreme Court on some grounds, and see what THEY say. I predict a 4-4 split in which the lower court's decision stands.

Losing control of the judiciary is a bitch, as Republicans are about to learn nationwide.

It is a state matter.

Here you have a very liberal county judge, trying to overturn the policies enacted by a popular governor and his party despite multiple recall efforts.

County judges are not the final repository of constitutional authority. They're just hacks.

This won't stand.

Unless a federal judge decides that it's a federal matter.

BTW, what is the partisan makeup of the Wisconsin Supreme Court? That is what will determine whether this decision stands or not.

One of the three major elections in WI since Walker's election was over the WI Supremes.

Walker's guy won, pretty easily too.

I looked it up. There are 5 conservatives versus 2 liberals on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, so you are right, this lower court action will be struck down.

WTF happened to paragraph breaks here? Why do we have to spend 10 minutes scrolling down a blank page to get to the text and photos?

Hmm...you only get that kind of blank page if you're on a very small screen.

If your page width is less than 1040 pixels, you will get that long blank space that you have to scroll down for.

The cause is the article sidebar being rendered before the article is.

My articles are all posted within a table 720 pixels wide. This overcomes some of the problems the forum has with certain fonts and other features. It also keeps articles from getting so wide that they become hard to read on larger monitors. I do wish Neil would fix it and I do know where his code and template need to be altered. This stuff was set up back in 2002 and the web and browsers and monitors have all changed a bit since 2002. In fact, this site is officially broken due to its use of SPAN tags instead of DIVs. Back in 2002, no one cared much and they were mostly interchangeable but in 2016, all the main browsers rigorously enforce those layout tags.

What browser are you using? What is your screen resolution? Maybe I need to adjust my table. Do you get this on every thread, just on threads that I post, or just on this one thread alone?

When they had that election fight over their court, it was 4-3. Walker got to appoint another justice since then.

I am using the most current version of Mozilla, and have no idea what my screen resolution is other than "HD",which probably means nothing. I do know it is the same as it has always been, and I didn't always have this trouble. Seems like it has only been a problem the last week or so.

Maybe I need to adjust my table.

If you are asking me this, you are backing up. I don't even know what a table is in the sense you are talking about.

Do you get this on every thread, just on threads that I post, or just on this one thread alone?

Seems like every thread I open, regardless of who created it.

Screen resolutions are pixel resolutions. Back when you first had a computer, these were 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768. A more modern laptop would be 1400x900 or 1920x1200. I have a 24" monitor on my Mac and it is 1920x1200. If I shrink the width of the browser down to around 1040 pixels wide, then I get that same thing where I see a huge blank space and have to scroll down to the article.

You can find these display settings in your computer's system preferences and see what you have, just to make sure it isn't your screen resolution.

If you're on a tablet or smartphone, you could tell me what model and I could check it for you.

Another thing that can cause it is if you have set your browser to Zoom in, to make the text much bigger. Right now, my Firefox is fine but if I hit Zoom twice, then I do get the problem with the blank space like you do. You can generally find the Zoom setting in the View menu (in Firefox, use the View->Zoom->Reset menu item). A lot of times, seniors will set their Zoom high to make easier reading and then forget they have it zoomed in. The browser also remembers how you have it set so it will start up with the same zoom setting even after you shut it off or quit the browser. You have to set it back to normal zoom yourself. My mom used to forget she had it zoomed and I would remind her she had to lower the zoom back down for some websites so they would look right.

I would check the Zoom setting in Firefox before looking for the Display resolution settings if I were you.

Damned browsers. It's always something.

Not yet,but I plan to as soon as I get caught up on other stuff to the point where my mind is clear to think. I'm mostly posting during commercials while watching the Walking Dead right now.

I can save you some time. The undead never manage to eat the right people so it can finally end.

I notice at sites that followed the show with weekly articles (HotAir, The Atlantic), they've all said they've had it with the show after this season's finale.

It is a ridiculous show. The undead can only move about 1mph. People on crutches or in wheelchairs could easily outrun them.

Let me know when you get to the season finale. Worst cliff hanger.

Thought you would be watching Better Call Saul as you were a Breaking Bad fan IIRC.

Not a bad series. Oh and Senior Salamaca is featured in Better Call Saul

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

I don't care what the fan boi sites say,and never visit them.

The PREMISE is ridiculous. The show is great. Game of Thrones ain't exactly a documentary, and it's probably the best series to ever air.

It's on my list to watch when I get the time. I mostly stream all this stuff a season or two after it is current so I don't have to pay the big monthly fees to watch it as it first plays. I do get Showtime and HBO,but if it doesn't play on either of those I get it later. I have access to over 1500 channels,so there is never a time when I don't have something interesting to watch if I'm bored. Spent a couple of hours watching a historic RO church in Siberia being restored by volunteers a couple of nights ago.
