When House Speaker Paul D. Ryan released a video laying out his familiar theme that politics should be fought on ideas and issues, the Drudge Report’s headline was: “Paul Ryan launches his first campaign ad.”

A dream of some Republicans is that Mr. Ryan will rescue them from a fiasco in the presidential election. That is unlikely. As states assemble delegates for the party convention, there are already demands that no votes be cast for someone who did not run.

It would be rational to turn to Gov. John Kasich of Ohio or Mr. Ryan, who might win the election, but neither the season nor the Republican grass roots seem to reward rationality.

Prior to the US War Between the States, the Whig party was the "conservative branch" of political ideals and principles. It morphed to the Know Nothing party and then some jerk grabbed Abe Lincoln to form the Republican party that later created the War between the States.

Today, we are seeing the demise of the Republican Party. It is the TERRORIST PARTY, now. I am glad to see the Republican carcass be kicked to the wayside. Vote Scruffy in 2016!

Drudge has become a Trump propaganda mill. It's blatant.

I wonder how much Trump paid him to destroy his own reputation. I know Drudge's influence has waned over the years as other internet venues have risen. I suppose this is just how he cashes out on his franchise.

[The Whigs] morphed to the Know Nothing party

No. The Know Nothings were the American Party. If they were around today, they would be Pat Buchanan and Donald Trump. Know Nothings were anti-Irish immigrants, anti-Chinese immigrants. They had much of the such rhetoric you hear from Buchanan and Trump. The Whigs of the era were not nearly as anti-immigrant.

So you might draw some parallels with this modern campaign but Whigs were not Know Nothings. In the modern context, the Know Nothings would be the Reform Party, the same party Buchanan ran as for prez under. And the same party that Trump toyed with running for prez under several times, some years back.

I'm guessing less than Cruz paid National Review to go after Trump.

No one had to pay them a dime. They hated his guts from day one.

Buckley on Trump (RedState):

This is not Trump’s first rodeo. In 2000, Trump made a run at the Reform Party’s nomination for the Presidency, and this is what Buckley had to say about the Donald back then:

When he looks at a glass, he is mesmerized by its reflection. If Donald Trump were shaped a little differently, he would compete for Miss America. But whatever the depths of self-enchantment, the demagogue has to say something. So what does Trump say? That he is a successful businessman and that that is what America needs in the Oval Office. There is some plausibility in this, though not much. The greatest deeds of American Presidents — midwifing the new republic; freeing the slaves; harnessing the energies and vision needed to win the Cold War — had little to do with a bottom line.

When Buckley labels Trump a demagogue, it would be comparable to opinions he expressed about Pat Buchanan years back, another Reform Party candidate.

BTW, you guys do recall that Trump is an old Reform Party candidate for prez, don't you?

I recall that he formed an exploratory committee, but not that he was an official candidate.

Buckley made that statement back in 2000 -- 16 years ago -- when our National Debt was $5 trillion. Think it applies today?

Seems to me we need a businessman as President. Career politicians certainly aren't hacking it.
