In two weeks, Cruz will be a zombie candidate like Kasich

by nolu chan
April 5, 2016

I have used linked data from the NYT and 538. Using other sources may vary the data somewhat over who has how many delegates and how many are left.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/elections/primary-calendar-and-results.html

2016 Election

Will Trump Clinch The GOP Nomination Before The Convention?

We don’t know, but our survey of delegate experts suggests it’ll be close.

By Harry Enten and Nate Silver

In addition to Nate Silver’s and my estimates, we tried to include a diverse set of opinions from across the political spectrum. We also focused on analysts who have been following the delegate race closely and know the intricacies of the GOP’s delegate rules. Our panel included these people:

  • Adam Geller: founder and CEO of National Research Inc. and the lead pollster for Chris Christie’s presidential campaign

  • Daniel Nichanian: contributing editor to Daily Kos Elections and PhD candidate in political science at the University of Chicago.

  • Henry Olsen: senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center

  • Margie Omero: managing director at Purple Insights

  • Patrick Ruffini: co-founder and partner at Echelon Insights and chairman and founder of Engage

  • David Wasserman: House editor at the Cook Political Report and FiveThirtyEight contributor

The "expert" panel for 538 (not a Donald Trump fan club) estimates 71 (of 95) New York delegates for Trump.

Unless one can find a way to plausibly claim that Trump/Kasich combined will take less than 33 delegates, the Cruz campaign claim to a clear path to a majority will become a mathematical impossibility after April 19th.

After that, Trump will be running against not one, but two zombie candidates seeking votes for the sole purpose of locking the convention so that the GOP establishment can select the candidate for the voting public. That will be a very difficult sell.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/ny/new_york_republican_presidential_primary-4222.html

The Real Clear Politics Poll of Polls indicates the following average for New York:

53.3% -- Trump

21.3% -- Kasich

19.0% -- Cruz

+32.0 -- Trump

Estimating only 71 for Trump is being generous to Kasich/Cruz. Cruz is likely to be obliterated in the northeastern states. In two weeks, after New York, Cruz will be just another zombie candidate like Kasich.

In two weeks, if one believes Cruz, Cruz should drop out for the same precise reason that Cruz now claims Kasich should drop out.

Today is Cruz' last hurrah.

Imagine how much better off we would be if the Republicans were coalescing now around Trump and hammering away at Hillary now that she's at her most vulnerable.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Instead the Republicans have to pull their usual crap.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Instead the Republicans have to pull their usual crap.

The usual crap is to consolidate around the frontrunner, usually making them an inevitable nominee with growing party support after the Florida primary.

That hasn't happened. Trump faces much more intense opposition than even a Romney or a McStain.

As for tonight, I notice Trump is back in NYC. Not waiting to give a victory speech in Wisconsin.

Leaving the state early, before its polls close, is usually a bad sign. And those last-minute voters seem to resent it.

Assuming he gets the most votes.

He needs a majority not a plurality. Do you recall Bush v Gore? Gore received the majority of votes yet lost the election because of the rules. The RNC has rules.

So how do you define cheating Trump out of the nomination if he doesn't get the majority of the delegate votes? IMO cheating him or anyone else would be changing the rules to specifically beat them.

The RNC is not the Electoral College where rules can be changed ad hoc. Though it is worth noting that the Electoral College can act in a manner to cheat someone out of the election.

"There is no Constitutional provision or Federal law that requires EC Electors to vote according to the results of the popular vote in their States. Some States do require that their Electors cast their votes according to the popular vote. These pledges fall into two categories—Electors bound by State law and those bound by pledges to political parties.

Some State laws provide that so-called "faithless Electors"; may be subject to fines or may be disqualified for casting an invalid vote and be replaced by a substitute elector. The Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on the question of whether pledges and penalties for failure to vote as pledged may be enforced under the Constitution. No Elector has ever been prosecuted for failing to vote as pledged.

Today, it is rare for Electors to disregard the popular vote by casting their electoral vote for someone other than their party’s candidate. Electors generally hold a leadership position in their party or were chosen to recognize years of loyal service to the party. Throughout our history as a nation, more than 99 percent of Electors have voted as pledged."

If they screw Trump out of the nomination. Assuming he gets the most votes. I will never vote for any Republicans forever.

I was there when the Bushites pulled the "McCain has a black daughter" robo-call in South Carolina in 2000. But I gritted my teeth and voted for Bush.

He turned out to be a turkey, and so did McCain, but I happily voted for Sarah Palin in 2008.

Come 2012, though, Romney was an outrage. I KNEW I was being lied to and screwed. But I ground my teeth down to nubs and stood there for a long time at the ballot - would I REALLY blacked the oval for that man?

I did. And regretted it by the end of the evening because he lost anyway. So, my compromise of my own character and my vote against my moral sense did nothing but sully me. The toad I voted for didn't win.

This year, I was staying home. But then came Trump. I AGREE with Trump on so many things. I'm happy and enthusiastic to vote for him.

Now I'm watching the Republicans be everything I loathed under Bush and Romney, doing it all AGAIN.

This time, I don't think they're going to get away with it. I think Trump will win the nomination and then go on to beat Hillary like a drum. I don't think the wall will get FULLY built in the end, because I don't think it will have to be. Once there's a guy in there who is serious and STARTS to build it, and to enforce, and to sanction, I think that all of a sudden there will be a reasonable cooperation by Mexico and others. Unable to stop it, they will be ready to make changes. But if they don't. the wall gets fully built. I don't see Trump backing down on anything. I do see him changing course if the effects of what he does improve a situation such that an optimal result can be achieved more swiftly and cheaply.

I could go on about my hopes - and let some posters here take shots at me for being a "fan-boi" and all that. So I'll cut it short.

I'm not a Republican, but I'll vote for the Republican named Trump, and if he moves things where he says he is going to, and the Republicans don't attack him and fight him every step of the way, I'll give credit where credit is due and give Republicans a chance.

But if they keep trying to screw him, and worse, if they succeed, they can all go fuck themselves and die in a hole for all I care.

I understand your fascination about tap dancing on your primers doing the funky boog-a-loo but, to be honest, you are going to extreme masochistic efforts. You could hurt your mom upstairs as you tap dance in the basement.

You should be considerate with your family that has housed you and cared for you all these years; don't you rememeber how your family has sheltered you while growing up leading you to the little short yellow bus for your special education? What about the facts that got you a job later on with a fake badge and a belt and hat emmulating a cop, even though you were a cross walk guard all these years?

man ... oh man ... you are a heart breaker. I know that it is not your own fault, however. But please don't tap dance on your primers in the basement anymore. Your mom needs some peace and quiet away from you.

He needs to stop Trump/Kasich combined from taking another 33 delegates. The cast of extras from The Walking Dead won't be enough. He will be another Kasich from mid-April until the primaries end in June.

If he tells the truth, very unlikely, all he could tell his supporters is to vote for Cruz to give him leverage against Trump to force Trump to adopt him as a VP candidate (if he can stop Trump from gaining a 1237 majority). The establishment will never adopt Cruz as their candidate.

No, a miracle has occurred.

Trump poses a serious threat to grabbing the nomination and dragging the entire GOP down to a Goldwater-scale defeat.

Cruz looks downright peachy, even to the Stain and Lady Lindsey (who used to joke that no senator would be prosecuted for murdering Cruz in cold blood). Now the Little Lady is hosting fundraisers and endorsing Cruz. Cruz hasn't changed his positions but Trump has scared the crap out of the GOPe.

he GOPe bureaucrats are better off if Hillary wins than if Trump or Cruz win.

That is their shortsighted error.

What they do not understand is that Hillary hates them. The GOP has bedeviled her life since Bill started to run for President. She and her family has been tormented and tortured and dragged through the mud by the GOP. There is not bonhomie there. She is not going to PROTECT the interests of the GOPe.

They THINK she will, but if she wins, she will have power. REAL power. Bone crushing power. More power than any President since LBJ.

And the REASON she will have such power is that from her first moments in office, among her first official acts, she will establish dominance over the Supreme Court of the United States.

Three Democrat women sit on the Supreme Court, plus Justice Breyer. They are strongly, reliably, consistently liberal Democrats in their votes. There is no Democrat Justice Kennedy, no Hamlet on the Dem side. The Democrats apply litmus tests and loyalty checks. They do not take chances with their nominees. Either Obama or Hillary will put the 5th Justice on that court, and for the first time since 1969 the Supreme Court will be controlled - DOMINATED - by Democrats. Liberal Democrats. Liberal, feminist Democrats.

And that control will cinch in tighter as time goes on, for Ginsburg and Breyer are both over 80, and can safely retire, and they will be replaced by Hillary's people. And then Kennedy, who is also in his 80s. He has always been unreliable. He will be replaced by a very reliable liberal Democrat.

Obama and Bush already showed how to command the country through Executive Order. Things that everybody thought could only be done through legislation have been imposed quite routinely by Obama and W before him. Congress cannot stop him either. Only the Supreme Court can. If Hillary controls the Supreme Court, the President's actions will NEVER be struck down by the court. Not ever. But the Republican rump in Congress will be.

Also, we should be clear. If Trump is robbed of the nomination, there are huge numbers of Trump supporters who will not turn out to vote, or who will vote Democrat in revenge. The Republicans will probably lose the Senate if they cheat Trump.

Clinton at one point had both houses of Congress, but no Democrat since LBJ has controlled the Supreme Court, and he didn't CONTROL it the way Hillary will.

9 of 13 Federal Circuits are already under Democrat control. More will be under Hillary.

Hillary is going to command power not seen in a Democrat since FDR's Administration after West Coast Hotel. There will be no check nor balance on her, and she HATES Republicans. She will destroy them.

She isn't going to back down on Obamacare, for example. No. She will ensure that the taxes and enforcement on the Republican donor class are ratcheted up.

The Republican Party has been on a jihad against the Clintons since 1992. What they fail to understand is that Hillary Clinton is a killer, and when she has power, she will USE IT, ruthlessly, to prosecute, imprison, and utterly crush the Republicans.

If Hillary Clinton wins this election, things will fundamentally change. The laws will change, the regulations, and the way that votes are counted and monitored. The Republican Party will never win the Presidency again. Hillary will complete their destruction and drive them into permanent rump status.

And the tax rates on the wealthy - the key Republican donors - will be screwed up through the roof.

THAT is what will break the cushy seats of the Republicans. Because the wealthy will shift their allegiance to Democrats in order to get protections and goodies. The Republican GOPe THINKS they will retain their cushy seats, but actually, they will be abandoned by the wealthy.

Hillary keeps score. Companies that gave money to Republicans will be cut out of government contracts, destroying them. Corporations will no longer be people too - and Republicans means of influencing elections will be cut off.

If Hillary wins, she is going to run the table and - very vindictively, with malice aforethought - target regulation and executive orders at specific Republican strongholds, businesses and people. The Kochs will be investigated, will be prosecuted, will be fined and destroyed and stripped of their wealth and power. Because Hillary will control the courts, and she will use them.

Mark my words. There will be no gridlock. There will be one party rule, and dissent will be crushed.

And from my perspective, that's fine. If the Republicans steal the election from Trump, I want them destroyed, prosecuted, and the wealth of the wealthy Republicans stripped from them and redistributed through the tax code to people who deserve it more than they do.

The bleating and screaming of the Republicans as this is done to them will be enjoyable to me. I hate them. I have said that many times. I will vote for them because of Trump, because HE is right. But if they screw him over and deprive me of my voice, I will enthusiastically stand aside and let the Democrats strip them of their wealth, their rights and even their lives - if they decide to fight.

America is in a revolutionary mode, and I'm French. Things can be settled peacefully, but if the ancien regime Republicans decide to pull the shit they look like they're going to pull, then I will be very happy to see them sent to the guillotine.

Literally.

When I say I hate them, I mean that I hate them enough to chop their fucking heads off.

Steal the election from Trump, and I will back Madam LaFarge to start prosecuting Republicans, imprisoning them, and sending them to the Gulag. Fuck them all.

Like we didn't know that all along.

Aen't you the ex-cop who told everybody that a cop has no obligation to potoect you or rescue you or otherwise intervene

I was referring to upper court case law, dopey. It's been deemed that the police aren't obligated to protect you, since it's impossible to do so 100% of the time. The ruling was a smart one since a moron like you would sue LE if the ruling was the opposite way and your weak liberal gunless ass was killed.... your family would be looking for deep pockets.

I'll tell you many case laws like Miranda or Roe vs wade... that doesn't mean I invented the concept, dummy.

I'm the infidel... Allah warned you about. كافر المسلح

It wasn't true all along, so if you "knew" it before, you were delusive.

Not "TL; DR" this time, I see.

I've known it for a long time.

Not "TL; DR" this time, I see.

I assume you know by now how limited my attention span (and perhaps most others here) really is.

You'd have more impact if you condensed your posts more and were more conversational. I am myself too longwinded in posts but you do manage to make me feel better about my own verbiage.

I will have no impact no matter what.

I am an independent who understands the Christian necessity of a strong social welfare state, posting on a website with conservative Republicans and paleo-conservatives. And when it comes to religion, I'm a Catholic posting on a site full of edgy old Protestants.

I will have no influence at all if I tell the truth.

I don't worry about it.

Raise your pom-poms all you want and rally for your choice.

Make all the fictitious claims you want. The arithmetic is undeniable. Cruz will be mathematically eliminated after the next primary. I need make no hand-wringing decision to observe the obvious.

That is their shortsighted error.

What they do not understand is that Hillary hates them.

They know perfectly well that Hillary hates them. Their essential interest is maintaining their own power within the GOP. Hillary does not threaten that as does Trump or Cruz.

What they fail to understand is that under President Hillary Clinton and a Clinton-nominated and dominated Supreme Court and federal appellate judiciary, the Republican Party will become a roach motel for its most cynical movers and shakers.

Want to be audited, investigated, and have all of the discretionary evidentiary judicial decisions go against you? Be a major GOP donor.

When the Clintons last held the IRS and FBI and CIA in their hands, they did so under a Republican Congress AND A REPUBLICAN SUPREME COURT.

Shift a key element: the Federal Judiciary, and turn it into Obama and Clinton appointees. It is to the judiciary that appeals are made when the Executive and Congress are at loggerheads. And since 1969, that has meant a Republican judiciary. Republicans often are faithless, but Democrats show a tenacious partisanship, particularly in the high judiciary.

Roberts betrayed the right, and so has Kennedy many times. Souter as well. When has Ginsburg, or Sotomayor, or Kagan, or Breyer, ever broken with the orthodoxy of the Left? Ever? They do not.

Imagine all of the investigatory tools of government turned upon the Republican donors with close air support from the Federal judiciary.

Gun rights? Easily constructed away. Political contributions by companies? Stricken. Union contribution to Dems? Enforced.

So, who will ultimately be hurt by Hillary Clinton and the Democrats? Not me. I will benefit quite a bit from democratic socialism. Rich Republicans will not escape: they will be fined, fleeced, stripped and probed.

And I'm fine with that.

They may think they will "maintain their own power within the GOP", but that will be the same thing as maintaining power in mob in Chicago after Capone went to prison. The GOP will be a roach motel - be prominent in it, and you will have a much higher likelihood of ending up broken and in jail than the average person. Hillary won't be taking prisoners, and she won't have to leave her enemies alone - the courts will back her. Congress will be neutered. Executive Orders, which the courts will uphold, will establish the laws and regulatory regime, and all Congress can try to do is shut down the government - which they have never been able to sustain and never will.

The Republican Establishment will bend the knee to Trump, or they will be cut to pieces by a victorious Hillary. Being a powerful Republican after Hillary wins will be like being a Menschevik after Lenin's coup, or a Dantonist after the victory of the Jacobins.
