Donald Trump and Derek Jeter on the same ticket? (USATSI)
Donald Trump is of course leading the fray when it comes to the GOP presidential nominee. The apparent likelihood that he'll square off against the Democratic nominee (Hilary Clinton or Bernie Sanders -- probably the former) in the general election has led to speculation on Trump's running mate.
And that brings us to the baseball hook for this dispatch, which involves the beloved future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. Take it away, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd ...
Asked in Cuba about talk he could be Trump's running mate, Jeter smiled and said, "That sounds like too much work." All right. To be sure, Trump's candidacy seems to have some traction among retired former Yankees, but this one seems to strain credulity. Jeter's never really provided much of a window into his political beliefs, and it's hard to see someone as polished and image-conscious as The Captain attaching himself to someone as controversial as Trump has been of late.
As it happens, Jeter once owned a condo in Trump World Tower in New York, but he sold not long before the Yankees fell to the Tigers in the 2012 ALCS. Jeter, of course, suffered a broken ankle in Game 1 of that series and was sidelined until July of the following year. Regarding those seemingly unrelated events, here's an old tweet from Mr. Trump himself ...
Derek Jeter had a great career until 3 days ago when he sold his apartment at Trump World Tower- I told him not to sell- karma?Hmm.
Anyway, Vice-President Jeter? Developing!
