By that I simply mean that workers at all levels can be caught up in any sort of malfeasance or incompetence and not only retain their jobs, but apparently profit from their actions. We’ve told you the story of the executive who ran her department into the ground and was punished with a plush gig in the Philippines. Then there was the Albany, New York administrator who was found to have drugs addicts on staff who were stealing the medication of the veterans and was fired, but somehow got her job back at full pay. And, of course, who could forget the Arizona VA chiefs who cooked up the scheme to keep veterans on phony waiting lists where some of them literally died without seeing a doctor, but will keep their positions with full pay and benefits for as much as two more years. But today we may finally have the story which tilts the pinball machine once and for all. This one takes place down in Puerto Rico where one diligent VA worker found herself unable to report to work for an extended period of time. She was held up, you see, by an inconvenient inability to get a pass out of prison to make it into the office. (Daily Caller) When veterans at the Puerto Rico VA hospital come to the social work department seeking counseling and guidance, the secretary greeting them, Elizabeth Rivera Rivera, will be wearing a GPS monitor ankle bracelet, a condition of her probation. Rivera was driving around Puerto Rico in the middle of the night on a Monday with Rolando Rio Febus and robbed a couple at gunpoint. Rivera was charged with armed robbery and her companion with armed robbery and gun charges. Rebus’ bail was set at $2 million due to multiple previous arrests on gun charges. Bail for Rivera was set at $100,000, which she could not pay, leaving her to miss work while she sat in jail. Well, that’s understandable at least. I mean, who among us hasn’t been out for a bit of late night carousing with our friends and somehow wound up holding somebody up at gunpoint. Hey… it happens. If I only had a nickel for every time… But seriously, now. We rejoin our story after Ms. Rivera has gotten out of the slammer only to find that she’s been fired from her job. I know, right? I was shocked also. Some employers can be so unreasonable. But not to worry… she took her case to their union reps for resolution. You get three guesses as to what happened and the first two don’t count. A Department of Veterans Affairs employee in Puerto Rico was fired after being arrested for armed robbery, but her union quickly got her reinstated — despite a guilty plea — by pointing out that management’s labor relations negotiator is a registered sex offender, and the hospital’s director was once arrested and found with painkiller drugs… Employees said the union demanded her job back and pointed out that Tito Santiago Martinez, the management-side labor relations specialist in Puerto Rico, who is in charge of dealing with the union and employee discipline, is a convicted sex offender. Martinez reportedly disclosed his conviction to the hospital and VA hired him anyway, reasoning that “there’s no children in [the hospital], so they figure I could not harm anyone here.” The union’s position — that another employee committed a crime and got away with it, so this one should, too — has been upheld by the highest civil service rules arbiters, and has created a vicious Catch-22 where the department’s prior indefensible inaction against bad employees has handcuffed it from taking action now against other scofflaws. The union defense is brilliant here. A previous employee was also convicted of serious charges and is still employed, so it would be grossly unfair to fire anyone else who is similarly sent to jail. It’s perfect, really. At this point one of the VA workers could literally shoot someone in the parking lot and still get their job back as soon as they get home from prison. It’s just baked into the cake. You are all now invited to smash the screens on your computers. You deserve a new one anyway. And hey… maybe we can get the VA to pay for it. Just when you think you've found the worst VA story ever, they manage to top themselves. It's like their real mission is to kill or neglect veterans, not provide them with any help. Which is why a lot of the doctors that work for the VA work there. They can't buy malpractice insurance because theirs was cancelled due to them being incompetent,and they can't get a job as a doctor working anyplace else. I am having eye lens replacement surgery,and using Medicare to pay for most of it,and paying out of my pocket for the balance,even though I could have had the surgery done for free at a VA hospital. I am spending at least $800 out of pocket that I didn't have to spend if I had the surgery at the VA hospital. My last and final (I hope) operation at a VA hospital was several years ago,when I had a "growth" (I am an Agent Orange vet,so anytime I have a lump,it is called a "growth" instead of a tumor) removed from behind and slightly to the side of my knee. It looked to be the size of a golf ball,but was probably closer to the size of a marble because the fluid had it pumped up. Anyhow,I guess the operation went fine because they removed it,but what they did wrong was they forgot to reattach the blood vein that was supplying it and my leg with blood. They sewed me back up with the blood vein still in two peices and sewn up. The result was my leg swelled to the point where it burst,and then it got infected. I spent the next couple of months with the VA telling me to take 2 fluid pills a day to get the swelling to go down,and the only thing that happened was my leg started turning black and purple from the ankle to just below the knee. The VA's solution was they wanted to amputate my leg and give me one of the modern whiz-bang aluminum ones they give to Muddle Eastern vets these days. I told them to blow it out their asses because I was going to seek other options. Went to my local surgeon and he sent me to a doc that specializes in circulatory systems,and he told me that if we could get rid of the infection he could restore some of the circulation by performing a simple in-office varicose vein replacement procedure that would take maybe 45 minutes,but we had to get rid of the infection first to keep it from spreading. I spend a couple of months going to see this doc once a week to have a new "Uni-Boot" put on my leg. I Uni-Boot is simply a Ace bandage that has been impregnated with anti-biotics,and then wrapped up with a dry Ace bandage to keep it moist and dirt-free. The real trick was he also cut a piece of what looked like the neoprene from a divers suit that was the same size as my weeping wounds,and placed it directly over the weeping holes in my leg. This neoprene was impregnated with the metal silver,and silver kills bacteria like nobodies business. Every week when they took the bandages off,the whole front of my infected leg would be covered with a thick black paste of dead bacteria. IIRC,the neoprene patch with the silver cost me 130 bucks each time,but IMO I wold have probably lost me leg if it hadn't been used. IIRC,I spent about 6 grand out of pocket by the time it was over. The good news is I saved my leg. At least temporarily. I will probably still lose it as I age due to the poorer circulation that comes with age. Once we got the infection under control,I got a replacement vein ran down inside the leg right there in his office,and was on my way back home about 45 minutes later. The new vein didn't completely fix the poor circulation problem because the damage was already so severe before I left the VA to go look for a solution elsewhere,and if you look at my leg from the side it looks like something took a bite out of it up front. This meat just rotten away due to VA incompetence,and it's not coming back. I have to be careful to not bang the front of my leg against anything because there is no meat there to cushion the blow,and I get bruised and infected again. In fact,I am going through that again right now. VERY moderate infection compared to what I used to get,this one has just been weeping pus for the last couple of weeks. Which means I am stuck in the house until it heals. I know wear a hockey shin guard on that leg when I am working out in the yard or in the shop to protect it from anything flying,like rocks or other debris when cutting grass,or from banging it against anything by accident. All this because the VA didn't/doesn't offer varicose vein replacement surgery,and because they didn't offer it,they weren't allowed to advise me to seek it out. Already had one eye done last week,and went to the doc today for the final checkup. Believe it or not,but I could read every line on the eye chart except for the very bottom one,and I'm not sure I was ever able to read that one when I was a kid. Don't need reading glasses to read anymore,either. And I had the standard lens put into my eye,not the 1500 dollar one that amounts to a permanent contact lens with corrective vision I go back in to get the other one operated on next Wednesday. To: sneakypete (#9) That must be cataract surgery. I know guys who have gotten rid of their eyeglasses after it and are generally pleased and happy to have clear vision again. Most of them seem to be 65 and older. I get my eyes checked every so often and I'm still a 4-eyed geek. When I was young and vain I wore contact lenses. Several years ago, my wife came home & I was reading the evening newspaper with a magnifying glass, LOL. She told me I had to do something. So I went to a local Phar More, got a magazine off the rack, and went to the non prescrip reading glass rack. Took me about 5 minutes, found a pair that worked, and I was done. I still use the cheap reading glasses, for reading. For distance I am fine. I can still hit targets at 350 meters with irons. Glad your first eye turned out well, hope your 2nd one does as well.
