Now I really have seen everything.

This week, in the Utah nominating caucus, I will vote for Senator Ted Cruz.

Today, there is a contest between Trumpism and Republicanism. Through the calculated statements of its leader, Trumpism has become associated with racism, misogyny, bigotry, xenophobia, vulgarity and, most recently, threats and violence. I am repulsed by each and every one of these.

The only path that remains to nominate a Republican rather than Mr. Trump is to have an open convention. At this stage, the only way we can reach an open convention is for Senator Cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible.

I like Governor John Kasich. I have campaigned with him. He has a solid record as governor. I would have voted for him in Ohio. But a vote for Governor Kasich in future contests makes it extremely likely that Trumpism would prevail.

I will vote for Senator Cruz and I encourage others to do so as well, so that we can have an open convention and nominate a Republican.

First Lindsey Graham, now this. Surely Cruz will reject these overtures from the Washington cartel. Right?

Thank you, Governor! https://t.co/4zbAGaIGSH

— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) March 18, 2016

Kasich campaign advisor John Weaver responded with this pissy tweet: “Good to know Ted Cruz is the establishment, K-Street backed candidate. #HelloStatusQuo” Amusing, but also another small bit of evidence that Team Kasich is aligned with Team Trump. Trump will be bludgeoning Cruz with that same line of criticism every day for the rest of the race now.

If you read this post this morning, you know that Romney’s correct about Kasich wrecking the odds of a brokered convention. His decision to compete in Utah, despite the obvious damage it would do to the anti-Trump effort, might have left Romney feeling he had no choice but to speak up today and nudge establishmentarians to start using their brains and voting strategically the rest of the way. (Of note: Michael Leavitt, a former governor of Utah and a close Romney ally, endorsed Kasich a few days ago, a deeply stupid move if you’re aiming to stop Trump. Romney’s trying to counteract that here.) Given how quick Cruz was to thank Romney for his endorsement, presumably the timing was coordinated with his campaign, raising the possibility that Romney might appear in Utah on Cruz’s behalf over the next few days. That’ll only make it easier for Trump to demagogue Cruz as a RINO establishmentarian but the delegate math the rest of the way is harsh enough that Cruz can’t worry about that now. He can only hope his populist voters will stick with him as a push from Beltway Republicans moves some of Kasich’s voters his way to try to stop Trump.

Whatever else you do, though, don’t call this an endorsement. Re-read Romney’s statement and you’ll see that at no point does he suggest Cruz should be the nominee. He says that people should vote Cruz because that’s the only way to force a contested convention, which in turn is the only way to stop Trump. Who he wants to see nominated at such a convention is an open question … although, in practice, I think Trump and Cruz will end up with enough delegates that they can re-write the rules so that it has to be one of the two of them. (Again, re-read this morning’s post linked above and note the bit about Rule 40.) And Cruz surely prefers this sort of quasi-endorsement to the real thing: Given the way Romney phrased this, he can now say in interviews, truthfully, that he hasn’t been embraced by the establishment. What they’ve embraced is a brokered convention, the same as every other anti-Trumper in America has. It’s a strategic alliance, not a substantive one.

Update: C’mon, Donald. You can do better than this.

Failed Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney was campaigning with John Kasich & Marco Rubio, and now he is endorsing Ted Cruz. 1/2

Mitt Romney is a mixed up man who doesn't have a clue. No wonder he lost!

Now Romney endorses Cruz. Yeah, THAT ought to help Cruz! (Not.)

Now Romney endorses Cruz. Yeah, THAT ought to help Cruz! (Not.)

And yet, even with a reduced DRat turn out that actually voted DRat Hillary has far more votes to date than Trump.

One of the reasons, perhaps the most significant one by far, that Romney lost in 2012 is that many so-called conservatives and/or REPs stayed home and did not vote in the general election. How many conservative and REP voters today are saying Never Trump? Reports range from 20-50+%. What percentage of this group would actually have to stay home for Hillary to win? You have to suspend disbelief to think that there will be a significant number of DRats that will come out and actually vote for Trump. Trump is no Reagan.

Trump will overwhelmingly lose blacks, Hispanics and likely Asians in the general election. He will very likely lose the women vote by a significant margin. He will have a significant number of REPs stay home. So exactly where does Trump get enough votes to beat her? Whites males?

In spite of his public denial, I believe that Obama has in fact told insiders to coalesce, unify around Hillary. He would never do this if he didn't know that she is not going to be indicted. Hillary will be the DRat nominee.

Trump is nothing but a con man and shill for Hillary. It doesn't matter what happens at the REP convention, Trump has assured that the REPs will lose in November and perhaps has successfully destroyed to REP party as a political contender, much less force.

Ok, then Hillary wins.

That is not my preferred outcome, because I strongly favor Trump's positions on Russia, Trade and the Border, and because I believe that Trump is pro- life and will name justices like Scalia to the Supreme Court.

Hillary's policies on Russia and Trade are no different from any of the other Republicans, and we already know that Republicans won't close the Border.

Democrat positions on the Social Safety Net are better than any Republican's.

So, if conservatives are reasonable and accept Russia and trade policies they don't like, with Trump they'll keep a conservative Supreme Court and more conservative policies on everything from gun control to taxation.

But if conservatives stay home because "#NeverTrump", then they'll get Hillary.

I will be sad that Trump lost, but with Hillary, at least, I get no different foreign policy than the rest of Trump, and I get better Social Welfare policy.

So net-net I will be happy with Trump, and I'll be disappointed but relatively content with Hillary. But the conservatives who stayed home will get absolutely hammered. They will get a Supreme Court that is very liberal. They will get much higher taxation on the rich. They will get a Hispanic flood unabated that will render aging white conservatives less and less significant in all future elections. They'll lose their gun rights.

I'll get a full loaf with Trump and half a loaf with Hillary, but you'll get half a loaf with Trump and a beatdown from Hillary.

See, when the pro-lifers folded their arms and didn't vote for Romney, they ensured that Obama won, but they already knew from Romney's recent behavior that he wasn't pro-life, and wasn't going to do anything for their cause. Obama was no worse.

But for the rest of conservatism, Hillary is much, much worse than Donald Trump for them.

So the conservative's choice is much harder than the evangelicals. Evangelicals knew they were getting nothing either way, so they stayed home, but conservatives will get a lot with Trump - they'll just have to accept defeat on some issues. With Hillary, they will be defeated on EVERY issue.

But Trump voters like me will not be in the same boat as you.

If you vote for Trump, after the election you'll still get a lot of what you want. If you don't, and Hillary wins, you'll have nothing at all.

So for you, it's half a loaf or none. For me, it's a full loaf or half a loaf. For evangelicals last time, it was no loaf either way.

Unless of course he doesn't change his mind......again.......or decide that these are just negotiating points in getting a deal.

"If you vote for Trump, after the election you'll still get a lot of what you want. If you don't, and Hillary wins, you'll have nothing at all."

The same was true if you change Trump to Romney and Hillary to Obama. Guess what, many so-called conservatives and REPS stayed home. But you like what we got.

I'm a Trump supporter.

If the GOP screws Trump out of the nomination, I stay home and Hillary wins, and I still get half a loaf, because I agree with the Democrats on the social safety net.

But if the GOP conservatives stay home with a "NeverTrump", then they get Hillary and the back of the hand.

The only way that the GOPe gets half a loaf is with Trump. So their BEST case is my WORST case.

I'm enjoying this election season more than any ever.
