Friday evening’s Donald Trump rally in Chicago was broken up by a foul- mouthed mob that infiltrated the hall and forced the cancellation of the event to prevent violence and bloodshed.

Brownshirt tactics worked. The mob, triumphant, rejoiced.

And the reaction of Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and John Kasich?

All three Republican rivals blamed – Donald Trump.

With his “dangerous style of leadership,” Trump stokes this anger, mewed Rubio, “This is what happens when a leading presidential candidate goes around feeding into a narrative of bitterness and anger and frustration.”

Rubio implies that if Trump doesn’t tone down his remarks to pacify the rabble, he will be responsible for the violence visited upon him.

Kasich echoed Rubio: “Donald Trump has created a toxic environment (that) has allowed his supporters and those who sometimes seek confrontation to come together in violence.”

But were the thousands of Trump supporters who came out to cheer him that night really looking for a fight? Or were they exercising their right of peaceful assembly?

Cruz charged Trump with “creating an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discord,” thus offering absolution to the mob.

Friday night cried out for moral clarity. What we got from Trump’s rivals was moral mush that called to mind JFK’s favorite quote from Dante: The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in time of moral crisis maintain their neutrality.

As news outlets have reported, Friday’s disruption at the University of Illinois-Chicago auditorium was a preplanned assault.

Behind it were the George Soros-funded MoveOn.org, Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, Hispanics hoisting Mexican flags and cop-haters carrying filthy signs to show their contempt for police.

People for Bernie, a pro-Sanders outfit, tweeted, “[This] wasn’t just luck. It took organizers from dozens of organizations and thousands of people to pull off. Great work.”

Now, Sanders did not order this assault on the civil rights of Trump supporters. But MoveOn.org has endorsed him, and “Bernie” signs and T-shirts were everywhere among the disrupters. Hence, he has a duty to disavow this conduct and those who engaged in it.

If Sanders refuses, he condones it, and is morally complicit.

Can one imagine how the media would pile on Trump if working-class white males in Trump T-shirts invaded a Hillary Clinton rally and shut it down?

Can one imagine how the networks and cable TV channels that host town halls with the candidates would react if hell-raisers sneaked into their audiences and shouted obscenities during discussions?

The keening over the First Amendment would not cease for weeks.

Some of us have been here before and know how this ends.

When the urban riots broke out in the ’60s, Hubert Humphrey declared that, if he lived in a ghetto, “I could lead a pretty good riot myself.”

At his 1968 convention in Chicago, radicals baited and provoked the cops in the front of the Conrad Hilton, and as this writer watched, their patience exhausted after days of abuse, Chicago’s finest tore into the mob and delivered some street justice.

“Richard Nixon,” wrote Hunter S. Thompson, “is living in the White House today because of what happened that night in Chicago.”

Hunter got that one right.

That fall, Humphrey was daily assailed by the kinds of haters now disrupting Trump rallies. Everywhere he went, they chanted, “Dump the Hump!” At times, Humphrey came close to tears.

That fall, Humphrey realized the monster he helped nurture.

My tormentors, he said, are “not just hecklers, but highly disciplined, well-organized agitators … some of them are anarchists, and some of these groups are destroying the Democratic Party and destroying this country.”

In 1970, when President Nixon sent U.S. troops into Cambodia to clean out Viet Cong sanctuaries, and students rioted, Ronald Reagan called them “cowardly fascists,” and declared, “If there’s going to be a bloodbath, let it begin here.”

Not much Cruz-Rubio-Kasich equivocating there.

When radicals stomped down Wall Street desecrating Old Glory, construction workers came down from the building sites they were working and whaled on them.

Union president Peter J. Brennan was soon in the Oval Office – and in Nixon’s Cabinet. “Secretary Bunker,” we called him.

Prediction. Given their “victory” in Chicago, MoveOn.org and its allied nasties will try to replicate it, again and again. And as Americans came to despise the ’60s radicals, they will come to despise them.

And, as in the 1960s, the country will take a turn – to the right.

America has changed from the land we grew up in. But she is not yet ready to allow ugly mobs screaming obscenities at Trump and his folks inside and outside that hall in Chicago, or their paragons like socialist Bernie Sanders, to take over the country.

Those raising hell in the street in Chicago and that convention hall are unfit to be citizens of this democratic republic.

For as Edmund Burke reminded us, “Men of intemperate minds can never be free. Their passions forge their fetters.”

How Bernie Sanders supporters shut down a Donald Trump rally in Chicago

03/12/16 10:18 AM—Updated 03/12/16 12:00 PM

By Alex Seitz-Wald

When Ja’Mal Green, a prominent black activist and Bernie Sanders supporter in Chicago, saw that Donald Trump was coming to the University of Illinois Chicago, he knew what he had to do. “Everyone, get your tickets to this. We’re all going in!!!! ?#?SHUTITDOWN?,” he posted on Facebook last week.

Little did he know they actually would shut it down.

[...]

And as the repeated chants of “Ber-nie” demonstrated, it was largely organized by supporters of Bernie Sanders, the Democratic presidential candidate who has struggled to win over black voters, but whose revolutionary streak has excited radicals of all colors.

“Remember the #TrumpRally wasn’t just luck. It took organizers from dozens of organizations and thousands of people to pull off. Great work,” tweeted People for Bernie, a large unofficial pro-Sanders organization founded by veterans of the Occupy movement and other lefty activists.

[...]

“We wanted to show Trump that this is Chicago, and we run Chicago, and we’re not going to take this,” said Green. “We got better organizers here.”

[...]

A Facebook page was started to promote the protest. By the night of Trump rally, more than 11,600 people had RSVP’d on the page saying they would attend the event. Another 19,000 said they were “interested.” Organizers were shocked when Facebook’s analytics said the page reached more than 1.5 million users.

The page explained how to acquire tickets to the Trump rally, complete with links, instructions on where and when to meet, and exhortations to remain peaceful.

Jorge Mena, a undocumented graduate student at UIC, started a petition on MoveOn.org calling on the school’s administration to cancel the event. The petition garnered more than 50,000 signatures, and once brass at MoveOn, which has endorsed Sanders, caught wind of the UIC backlash, they wanted to help. MoveOn chipped in money to get signs and a banner printed and blasted out an email to members in the Chicago area encouraging them to join the protest.

[...]

Meanwhile, on the night of the Trump rally, organizers who planned to disrupt the event from inside had designated multiple rallying points around the venue to avoid arousing suspicion of authorities with large congregations. Some met at the Papa John’s, others at the Quad.

As activists slipped into the lines, they were told to blend in with the crowd and act natural.

Inside, about 100 protesters received coveted orange wristbands allowing them access to the floor. Even as organizers tried to maintain calm, some scuffles with Trump fans started right away, and police began removing people. Secret Service agents recognized Green and pulled him outside, he said, but he quickly changed into a friend’s hoodie and slid back in.

The plan was to wait until Trump took the stage, then wait for the applause to die down and have all the protesters erupt at once. But they never made it that far. Instead of Trump, an official announced the event was canceled.

At that point, “we just went crazy,” said Green.

Jedidiah Brown, another organizer, rushed the stage to rip up a Trump sign before being removed. He was put in a headlock by a Trump supporter and had a water bottle thrown at his head.

“It became a Bernie Sanders rally,” he said. Hundreds of supporters chanted Sanders’ name, and some carried signs for the senator. Brown guessed the vast majority of the diverse protesters were Sanders supporters.

A Message to the Valdosta State University Community

Dr. Cecil P. Staton, interim president of Valdosta State University, issued the following message to Blazer Nation today:

I would like to applaud the Valdosta State University community on how we represented ourselves yesterday during the visit of presidential candidate Donald Trump. Every four years our nation witnesses the drama of a presidential election with all of the associated emotion, passion and tension.

While some have asked why VSU would allow such an event, I am convinced that our campus and particularly our students are better informed for having this brief, up-close, birds-eye view of a presidential election. We endured for a day over-crowded parking conditions as well as the temporary inaccessibility of facilities due to heightened security. Protestors were able to make their voices heard in designated areas. Those who wished to attend stood in lines and passed through security screening. Some others, uninterested, were able to ignore the whole spectacle altogether. But for the first time in decades a major presidential campaign visited VSU and Valdosta and that is a good thing to have occurred.

One negative aspect of the event receiving considerable attention today was the removal of a number of people from the rally. While some are suggesting racial motives, law enforcement leaders are rejecting this claim (see: http://www.valdostadailytimes.com/news/local_news/police-chief-removal-of-youths-from-trump-rally-not-racial/article_b413b4f8-dfc3-11e5-868c-ebfa85fa78b5.html?utm_source=WhatCounts+Publicaster+Edition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Breaking_News&utm_content=READ).

While this is disturbing, it should be remembered that this was not a VSU sponsored event, but a private function. The Trump campaign, together with the Secret Service and other law-enforcement officials, had responsibility for such decisions, not VSU. As we reminded the campus via email last Friday, current federal law (HR 347) does not allow for protesting of any type in an area under protection by the Secret Service.

Fortunately today the sun is shining and our beautiful campus is more or less back to normal. There will be continued conversations about what took place here. But also remember that today is an election day. Attending a campaign rally or protesting is one thing, but the ultimate political act in our country is voting—voting our convictions and voting for the candidate of our choice. I encourage everyone to exercise this enormously significant right and responsibility.

For VSU, however, this is another occasion to be reminded of what a university really is. Our Blazer Creed summarizes it well. This is a community where we value free and open inquiry and discussion of ideas with civility, integrity, and citizenship. As a student and spectator of the political process in our country, I believe that all candidates and campaigns could learn from the Blazer Creed and benefit from following it as we do here at VSU.

Those raising hell in the street in Chicago and that convention hall are unfit to be citizens of this democratic republic.

For as Edmund Burke reminded us, “Men of intemperate minds can never be free. Their passions forge their fetters.”

The tactics in Chicago were the tactics on display in Maidan Square two years ago. I'm surprised that John McCain did not go for a photo op with the rioters in Chicago. He normally loves to have his picture taken with these sorts of thugs. The Soros rent-a-mob color coded riots have to our shores, courtesy of those who exported it.

These thugs, and more importantly those who finance them, they are an existential threat to our freedoms, not who's flag flies over some reef in the South China Sea. In keeping with the Ides of March recall that Caesar was to remain north of the Rubicon. Soros has brought his color coded mob violence across the Rubican like the legions of Caesar. Empire is the death of a republic, you cannot have both.
