Three people were killed and 14 injured Thursday after a gunman drove through two Kansas towns randomly taking shots at people before opening fire at his workplace, police said.

The assailant, identified by police Friday as Cedric Larry Ford, was armed with an assault rifle and semi-automatic pistol during the "mass shooting" in Newton and Hesston, nearby towns about 30 miles north of Wichita, authorities said.

The shooting spree spanned six miles and covered three crime scenes — lasting just 26 minutes from when the gunman shot and injured a person at about 5 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) and stole a truck, until the first police officer on the scene shot him dead.

Ford was killed at Excel Industries, a lawn-care company in Hesston where he worked.

Fifteen of the victims were shot inside the building — including all three who died, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton first said at a news briefing Thursday night. Five of the wounded remained in serious condition overnight.

Walton told NBC News early Friday that Ford used the assault rifle during the rampage, but did not appear to fire his pistol.

The sheriff, when asked about a possible motive, said a deputy had served the shooter a protection from abuse order at Excel around 3:30 p.m. It was the second such order he had received after failing to show up in court, Walton said.

Walton at a news conference Friday morning declined to detail who requested the protection order, saying the investigation was still in its early stages. A report in the Wichita Eagle, a local newspaper, said Ford's "live-in girlfriend" filed a written petition for protection from abuse on Feb. 5.

The sheriff said it's possible the court order incited the workplace carnage.

"We always say it won't happen here. Well here it is. It happened here," Walton told NBC News. "We'll get through it. It's a good community of good, strong people."

The FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene but the sheriff said the incident was not related to "terrorism."

Kansas law doesn't require a permit to buy long guns or handguns, which don't have to be registered.

An ATF official said they were investigating how Ford obtained the weapons.

Court records showed that Ford, 38, was a felon who previously lived in Miami and was on probation with a series of convictions in Florida, including burglary in 2000.

He had a criminal record stretching back to October 1996, when he was charged with carrying a concealed firearm when he was 18 years old, the records showed.

Law enforcement officials first became aware of Thursday's incident after being called to reports of two people shot and injured — one in the shoulder and one in the leg — on different streets across the two towns.

The gunman then drove north toward his workplace, where he shot another person in the parking lot, Walton said.

By the time the first police officer arrived at the scene, the gunman was "actively shooting at any targets that came into his sights," Walton added.

The officer — a member of the Hesston police force who was not named — went in alone, killed the gunman and "saved a lot of lives," the sheriff said.

Walton said the shooter would have fired "until he was out of ammo. I don't know how much he had. … He was just shooting indiscriminately."

Another officer who arrived, Hesston police Sgt. Chris Carter, told reporters Friday morning that his adrenaline kicked in as he entered the building, where about 200 to 300 people were inside. Some of his relatives work at Excel, he said.

"What crossed my mind was finding the bad guy, protecting everyone else who was there," Carter said. "Overwhelming. But we're on auto-pilot. We're trained for these. We just do what we're trained to do."

Carter, who was driving a pickup truck, managed to help one of the victims. Walton hailed Carter as "another hero."

A couple of hours later, Newton police and a SWAT team converged on a home in a Newton trailer park where the gunman was believed to have lived.

Walton told reporters that the shooter's roommate was inside and refusing to engage with officers — but when officials obtained a warrant and returned at 10 p.m., they found the property empty, NBC station KSN reported.

One of those injured at Excel Industries was Dennis Britton, who was shot in the right buttock and suffered a fractured right femur, according to his father.

Dennis Britton Sr., also an Excel employee, told NBC News his son "made eye contact with [the shooter] when he walked away," and that he "heard a clap and hit the floor" after being shot.

"It's rough, I'm not going to lie to you," Britton said. "He was like all the rest of them there. He's a family man. He's got three kids and one on the way."

Martin Espinoza, who works at Excel, was in the plant during the attack, he told the AP. He heard people yelling to others to get out of the building, then heard popping, then saw the shooter, a co-worker he described as typically pretty calm.

Espinoza said the shooter pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger, but the gun was empty. At that point, the gunman got a different gun and Espinoza ran.

"I took off running. He came outside after a few people, shot outside a few times, shot at the officers coming onto the scene at the moment and then reloaded in front of the company," Espinoza said. "After he reloaded he went inside the lobby in front of the building and that is the last I seen him."

Meanwhile, Excel's President and Chief Executive Paul Mullet said he did not know when the plant would reopen, his first priority being the victims' families.

"Excel family is deeply saddened by the horrific event that occurred yesterday," he told reporters Friday. "Our hearts go out to our employees and their families."

Kansas officials began paying their respects Thursday evening.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback called the shooting a tragedy Friday, and told reporters that it was too soon to discuss any need for stricter gun control laws.

There is an exception to ever rule, and the rule this breaks is that it is always white men who are mass murderers in America.

It's rare,but sometimes minorities do it,too.

No race has a lock on crazy. It can happen in any group.

Wrong, but Dim hacks like you do make it possible for the shooters to look like victims because you are implying the murders were the fault of the guns and the governors, not the animals pulling the triggers.

He also makes it easy for citizens to buy weapons so they can defend themselves against Democrats with guns.

WHY do you have a problem with this?

Mindless babble.

Are you also tired of hearing about innocent "civilians" (ain't we ALL civilians if we are not in the military? What do you insist on sounding like a mindless parrot on this issue?) saving their lives and the lives of others by using their guns to stop a murderer from doing more killing?

Or is your primary concern for the lives of the murderers? You can't have it both ways,so make up your mind.

BTW,I AM better trained and more effeective than probably 90 percent of the police.

Well,it ain't like that is the first time you have been wrong. At one time I was a career US Army light weapons man,and since then have been a gunsmith. I have probably shot more weapons and sent more rounds downrange than some small police departments.

And as law-abiding citizens, we vote on the issue...

No,you don't. Voters don't get to nullify the Bill of Rights. Not even the feral government has the right to do that, and any that try are criminals. What does "Shall not be infringed" mean to you in the alternate Dim universe you live in?

All in favor of letting professional law enforcement do their jobs, say "aye" All opposed to delusional amateurs shooting up the neighborhood also say "aye"

You really need to get out more.

I choose to rely on myself to defend myself, thank you very much.

This ain't the Wild, wild west...

Nor is it Utopia.

Not going to happen. Not now,not ever. I will ALLOW and EXPECT them to do their jobs IF they happen to be around when/if I need help, but since I got out of the army and off the teams,I depend on nobody but myself to protect me and mine.

That's what they get paid to do.

Do you live in some sort of dream world where all the cops are competent, and you have your own personal pair following you around every where you go?

BTW,the 2nd Amendment has NOTHING to do with self-defense,since that is a universal right that NO ONE has the authority to take away from you. It exists PURELY to defend our nation against a corrupt government that would seek to take over our nation and remove our rights. In case this isn't real clear to you, cops are government employees, and the ones most likely to stomp on your rights.

I take back my charges you are delusional. You are just old-fashioned stupid. There is no other explanation for someone so clueless that they think cell phones and protests will take down a government that controls all the media outlets as well as the military because they have usurped the power of the people and set aside the Bill of Rights and the rest of the US Constitution.

Has it ever occurred to you dumb-asses that any government that usurps the Bill of Rights will removing the rights after eliminating the 2nd Amendment? Just how are you going to accomplish these mass protests when it is suddenly illegal to criticize the government or assemble in groups bigger than 3 or 4?

Then again, fools like you want to see the 2nd Amendment removed and are obviously convinced you will retain your other rights. This, from a government that already arrests people for "hate speech".

The man who said sexual intercourse is bad and leads to constipation.

A fool who supported honor killings of mens daughters if they were raped.

The man who forcefully cut the hair off of a woman to punish her for not agreeing with him.

When he basically called the blacks of South Africa niggers. Here is a quote

"“Ours is one continued struggle against degradation sought to be inflicted upon us by the European, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir, whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife with, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness.” (Sept. 26 1896 (CW II p. 74))

An interesting way of saying "HE DIDN'T HAVE ARMS to free India from British rule,so he had to beg the United Nations to lean on GB in order to get them to go away.

It no doubt escaped the attention of your pea-sized brain that people who don't have arms CAN'T take over a government and have to rely on others to get their rights for them.

Tell us all,Brainac, who is going to secure our rights for us if we let retards like you who can't even understand the difference between the word "RIGHTS" and the word "PRIVILEGES" start deciding which of our RIGHTS are PC enough for the government to ALLOW us to retain them, and which much be eliminated "for our own good"?

After all,Gandhi didn't free India from GB. The UN did. Mostly because they are composed of a bunch of little piss ant countries that are jealous of any country with enough power to pretty much stand on their own.

Are you so mentally challenged that you see the UN stepping in to pressure America to re-instate our Bill of Rights, when none of the UN member countries ,with the exception of Russia, even have one themselves?

Not only don't individual citizens have any control over what the UN does, but neither do entire nations. And YOU explect THEM to be concerned about YOUR rights? You won't have any rights under UN rule they don't give you.

ISLAM MEANS SUBMISSION!

Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)

American Indians had open borders. Look at how well that worked out for them.

My vote don't mean jack-squat after Citizens United anyway, pinhead... so what's the difference?

If you don't like it, go to Patagonia. I'm staying here.

Ahhh,so you are a Citizen of the wurld and consider the UN to be your government!

That explains a lot.

"We iz da wurld......

we iz da peep-pulls......"

If you don't like it, go to Patagonia.

That's typical of what passes for "logic" with you loony One-Worlders. I think you should go to India. LOTS of One World socialist slaves there that agree with you,and LOTS of trains. You may have to eat and live in the local trash dump, but that's a reasonable price to pay to be a part of the "Weeze all Wun!" movement, right?

I'm staying here.

You wouldn't be if I had my way. I'll pull your citizenship in an instant, and truly make you a "Citizen of the World" by dropping you off at UN headquarters and telling them to keep you fed and watered.
