President Barack Obama is urging states to make it easier for people to vote in elections. Obama has told a group of Democratic governors at a White House meeting Friday that voting systems need updating to reflect the way people live today.
He has cited a law taking effect this year in Illinois, his home state, that he says will expand early voting and allow people to register and vote on election day.
Obama also has cited Oregon and California for being the first to adopt automatic voter registration.
Obama says he wants to focus on voting rights during this presidential election year because democracy's job is to make voting easier, not harder.
The governors are visiting Washington for the annual winter meeting of the National Governors Association.
