Donald Trump’s latest bombshell, claiming the Bush administration lied about weapons of mass destruction to get us into the Iraq War, is just him doing wheelies on the way to the nomination. He’s apparently decided it would be fun to taunt the entire GOP by demonstrating that he can say anything and his voters won’t care.

I wish he’d stop showing off, the little scamp, but maybe the GOP establishment will finally get the message that voters have been waiting a really long time for a candidate who would put Americans first. Not donors, not plutocrats, not foreigners, and certainly not foreign plutocrats (i.e., Fox News).

Trump is the first presidential candidate in 50 years who might conceivably: (1) deport illegal aliens, (2) build a wall, (3) block Muslim immigration, (4) flout political correctness, (5) bring manufacturing home, and (6) end the GOP’s neurotic compulsion to start wars in some godforsaken part of the world.

That’s all that matters! Are you listening yet, RNC?

There is not another candidate who agrees with Trump on all these positions. Maybe one issue, but not all of them — and if it’s immigration, they would be lying.

Even Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) still refuses to say he’d deport illegal aliens (unless they’re arrested for breaking some other law), build a wall (instead he talks about “border security,” which is code for: No Wall), or reduce legal immigration at all.

Trump is like a greatest-hits album. The two political parties are the record companies, refusing to put all the hits on one album and instead forcing us to choose between Republicans who will depress wages through immigration and bad trade deals, or Democrats who pretend to care about working-class Americans while sacralizing abortion and gay marriage.

Trump is right about President Bush not keeping us safe — though not about his “Bush lied” argument that makes me want to strangle him. This is what Trump said last October on “Coyote News Sunday” (FNC) about how things would have been different on 9/11 under President Trump:

“Well, I would have been much different, I must tell you. … I am extremely, extremely tough on illegal immigration. I’m extremely tough on people coming into this country. I believe that if I were running things, I doubt … that those people would have been in the country.”

And that was before Trump announced his plan for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration! (By contrast, as governor of Florida, Jeb! aggressively pushed a bill to allow illegal aliens to get driver’s licenses, less than three years AFTER 13 of 19 hijackers used Florida driver’s licenses to board the planes on 9/11.)

It is apparently considered less controversial to send a million troops to the Middle East than to stop printing visas for would-be terrorists.

It’s not just George W. Bush’s open-borders policy that cries out for re-examination. During a debate with Al Gore one year before the 9/11 attack — committed by Arabs on U.S. commercial airlines — he pre-emptively denounced the racial profiling of Arabs by airport security.

The Wall Street Journal proclaimed that “the ‘racial profiling’ issue might help Bush win Michigan.” (Good call, WSJ! Bush lost Michigan, anyway.)

In June 2001 — three months before the attack committed by Arabs on U.S. commercial airlines — the Bush administration undertook a study to ensure that Arabs were not being disproportionately stopped by airport security.

When U.S. Airways ticket agent Michael Tuohey laid eyes on Mohamed Atta on the morning of 9/11, he got a “chill” and thought to himself, “If this guy doesn’t look like an Arab terrorist, then nothing does.” But then, he says, he gave himself a politically correct “slap,” and handed Atta his ticket.

Atta proceeded to murder 3,000 Americans. But at least no undue scrutiny of Arabs was taking place at U.S. Airports!

The Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)s, Nikki Haleys, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)s, Jeb!, Zeppo and Shemp Bushes of the GOP say: “Vote for me — we may have a terrorist attack, but at least we’ll know we did the right thing!” Trump says: “I’m going to protect you.”

That’s why it doesn’t matter when Trump pops off and says things that are not conservative orthodoxy — or even true!

Even if you think Trump is a libertine, shallow narcissist, you know he will do what no other Republican will: Go to Washington, kick ass, mock political correctness, build a wall, deport illegals, bring manufacturing home, and end the GOP’s peculiar fixation with remaking the Muslim world.

This is our last chance. It’s similar to the “point of no return” global warming alarmists keep talking about, except our data isn’t fake.

At our current rate of immigration/transformation, if we don’t break the donor fever grip now, we never will. This kind of correction isn’t just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, it’s a once-in-a-millennium opportunity.

The GOP didn’t hear us with Eric Cantor, with the 2014 election or with John Boehner. After all that, they still gave us Nikki Haley and Paul Ryan. President Trump is the last and only message they will understand. (1 image)

"So just are they capable of lying about something like that on that scale?"

On what scale? What are they lying about? I'm happy to answer your question, but I don't know what the question is.

Four planes crashed -- two into the WTC, one into the Pentagon, and one in Pennsylvania. The planes are missing. The people aboard are missing. It happened. So no, I don't think the government could pull off a lie like that and, furthermore, they didn't even try.

Speaking of that convoy of trucks that exited Iraq before the invasion ?

Know one Officer who personally watched the footage 'real time' and know of the reputation of the General officer screaming on a line to DC asking to release SF to intercept.

What both men honestly conclude is they don't know for sure what the cargo contained on the convoy, but given the origin of the departing vehicles, knew the purpose of those facilities.

Bottom line, we don't know for sure, but lost an opportunity to find out. I understand why the admin most likely declined intervention...we were still working a couple of 'hail Mary' diplomatic routes before military intervention (the invasion).

Why we did not pursue this course after the invasion is a blunder in itself and why many in the Military head shed to this day opine on as a huge dent in our strategic approach to the GWOT.

I looked at your link It is from 2008. That isn't prior to 911.

Sure it mentions things from prior to 911.

I'm loooking for original documents dated prior to 911 that have the word "al qaeda" in them.

Frankly that's a cop out. The links gave you the history of Al Qaeda. That the NYTs or WaPo did not write about AQ prior to 9/11 shows you how much the Bush1 and Clintoon admins kept that information close hold. Also shows how they bungled threat assessments.

Your assertion was that AQ was created after 9/11. That's false and I gave you the evidence to refute your claim.

I think you know the right thing to do now...

Some writing an article and talking about something is not a proof of anything.

It wouldn't be admitted in any courtroom.

It is not a cop out.

If they existed under that name it is documented somewhere.

Why did they suddenly use the name after 911? But never ever before?

At least not documented.

Don't feel bad everyone I ever put to this test has failed. Which makes me rightly or wrongly doubt the government story.

I can find articles about Hezzbolah, the PLO and everyone else. Just not Al Qaeda.

I have an acetylene-oxygen torch set out in my shop that melts steel all the time.

Why don't you just use some 2x4's and some kerosene?

For several reasons, mostly related to making precision cuts, where fires like you suggest are more for forging steel than cutting steel.

I do use rosebud tips and the cutting torch on occasion to weaken steel so I can use a hammer and anvil to shape it,though. Get it hot enough and you can bend it by hand if you have good gloves and can grab it a few inches from where the heat was focused. Steel weak enough to bend by hand has no structural strength at all. Let it cool and depending on the alloy some or even most of the structural strength will return once it cools.

Sometimes you have to quench it in various liquids or powders for precise periods of time to return all the strength, but I am dealing almost exclusively with raw steel, not the heat-treated stuff. I have welded heat-treated parts back together after annealing them though, and had them professionally heat treated afterwards, though.

You can even buy ovens designed for this purpose with digital timers if you do enough of it to be worth your while.

The Windsor Tower was built differently. Reinforced concrete was used in the core and below the 17th floor. Above the 17th floor was a central support system of concrete columns, supporting concrete floors with steel perimeter columns.

The steel perimeter columns melted and fell away 2 hours into the fire, leaving just the concrete core as shown in the picture below:

If the fire didn't bring down the WTC buildings, then what did and where's your proof?

I think the fact that the WMD were sold to Iraq by our NATO ally Germany had a lot to do with that.

History is often determined more by political considerations than reality.

August 14, 1996: State Department Calls Bin Laden One of Most Significant Terrorism Sponsors in the World

The State Department issues a fact sheet on bin Laden, calling him “one of the most significant financial sponsors of Islamic extremist activities in the world today.” The text ties bin Laden to funding specific attacks, such as the attempt to kill dozens of US soldiers in Yemen in 1992 (see December 29, 1992). The fact sheet is also mentions the term “al-Qaeda,” leading to the first media reports using that term the next day (see August 14, 1996). The fact sheet also contains details about bin Laden’s finances, such as the allegation that he co-founded the Al-Shamal Islamic Bank in Sudan in 1990 with a group of wealthy Sudanese and capitalized it with $50 million of his fortune. [US Department of State, 8/14/1996; New York Times, 8/14/1996] Much of this information appears to come from al-Qaeda defector Jamal al-Fadl. The CIA had just finished debriefing him weeks before (see June 1996-April 1997).

http://www.historycommons.org/context.jsp?item=a081496biggestfinancier

There's a reason for the 1996 mention of Bin Ladin. The Khobar Towers bombing.

When I first walked into the office of the Antiterrorism-Force Protection division, I saw a picture of Bin Laden and below a collage of photos from the Khobar Tower terror attack. That was 1997.

Maybe the American people did not know squat about AQ and Bin Laden before 9/11 but those of us in the AT-FP and Counter-Terror community knew all too well.

I was sitting in a lecture auditorium listening to a retire General tell us the US Army would eventually downsize to 300K given our long period of peace and security. An hour into his lecture he was rudely interrupted by a LTC asking him to cease his brief and let him pipe in a feed from CNN and Fox News. It was 9/11/01 and I was currently a student at the Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth KS.

As we all watched the coverage of the attacks most left the auditorium as the post commander ordered the post closed and everyone to depart. I stayed a bit longer with my instructor to view most of the coverage. The General came up to us and said "go home" and we headed to the door when he said "who could do this."

I told him without hesitation that if this was a terror attack the only organization with global reach that could accomplish this would be Bin Laden's AQ. He chuckled and said, "no way has to be someone like Saddam." I laughed and said "no it's Bin Laden."

The next day my instructor gave me the floor in the small group classroom to present a briefing on Bin Laden and AQ.

So Stone, those of us who were tracking AQ and Bin Laden for 7-10 years before 9/11 knew, still know they were around for quite some time.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

Some people would say and this is just off the top of my head.

Fire doesn't melt steel. Even if it was hit by a plane.

That it is a weird coincidence that the fighters at Andrews Air Force base happened to be on Patrol over the Atlantic Ocean far from being able to respond to 911. How lucky for the terrorists that the defense was out of town.

I wonder why the government changed the mission of Andrews AFT on like sept 12, 2001. What a weird coincidence.

No flight recorder audio between pilots and air traffic control ever released. Weird.

Paper passport found in rubble. Strange.

Poofs of smoke blowing out the side of the buildings. That's kind of strange.

Say what the FAA was required to shadow any plane that went a few thousand feet off course. I'm not sure of the actual distance but it wasn't a state away.

Man those terrorists must have been feeling lucky to take a long route across Ohio and looking around instead of going straight to target. They must have thoughat Allah was with them that day.

I looked for the debris from the crashed flight over Pennsylvania. It seems to have vanished.

I looked up the size of the planes and the pentagon. Do it yourself. Look at the pics. The hole doesn't appear big enough. Maybe there is a reason but that is an unanswered question.

So what do you expect a thinking person to think. Oh just a bunch of coincidences. I better not say anything or some people who watched the TV said that is moonbattery.

They offer nothing absolutely nothing. Then call people moonbats like they are some kind of genius. But in fact they are being what they accuse Trump of.

I see it took well over 20 years for you to finally give in to the propaganda of the tinfoil crew who frequent your site.

Trust me. The American government is too stupid to pull off such an operation and keep it a secret.

The military is not stuffed with 'yes men' ready to violate the very Constitution they swore to uphold.

You will just have to face the reality that many ME Arabs who just happen to be Muslim hate our guts and blame us for everything going wrong in their world.

They have the same mentality as the Western leftists and why they get along so well.

The Plane that hit the Pentagon?

Yes, I know an eyewitness to watching the plane hitting the Pentagon. A friend who just came back from an early doctor's appointment showing up late for work. He was on I-395 while he saw the passenger plane drive into the very 'wedge' of the Pentagon where his wife works.

Praise be to God she had a nasty smoking habit and was on the other side of the Pentagon on a smoke break.

Her bad habit saved her life that day.

Obviously, if you and other 9/11 CTers are to believed someone 'got to' my friend and changed his story.....

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. Here is a passage from Clarence Thomas dissent of the Hamden v Rumsfeld decision . In it he references some of the time line I gave you yesterday. No it is not dated before 2001. But he and his staff did their research before he wrote this dissent .

Moreover, the President’s determination that the present conflict dates at least to 1996 is supported by overwhelming evidence. According to the State Department, al Qaeda declared war on the United States as early as August 1996. See Dept. of State Fact Sheet: Usama bin Ladin (Aug. 21, 1998); Dept. of State Fact Sheet: The Charges against International Terrorist Usama Bin Laden (Dec. 20, 2000); cf. Prize Cases, 2 Black, at 668 (recognizing that a state of war exists even if “the declaration of it be unilateral” (emphasis in original)). In February 1998, al Qaeda leadership issued another statement ordering the indiscriminate—and, even under the laws of war as applied to legitimate nation- states, plainly illegal—killing of American civilians and military personnel alike. See Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders: World Islamic Front Statement 2 (Feb. 23, 1998), in Y. Alexander & M. Swetnam, Usama bin Laden’s al-Qaida: Profile of a Terrorist Network, App. 1B (2001) (“The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies—civilians and military—is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it”). This was not mere rhetoric; even before September 11, 2001, al Qaeda was involved in the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City in 1993, the bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia in 1996, the bombing of the U. S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, and the attack on the U. S. S. Cole in Yemen in 2000. See id., at 1. In response to these incidents, the United States “attack[ed] facilities belonging to Usama bin Ladin’s network” as early as 1998. Dept. of State Fact Sheet: Usama bin Ladin (Aug. 21, 1998). Based on the foregoing, the President’s judgment—that the present conflict substantially predates the AUMF, extending at least as far back as al Qaeda’s 1996 declaration of war on our Nation, and that the theater of war extends at least as far as the localities of al Qaeda’s principal bases of operations—is beyond judicial reproach. And the plurality’s unsupportable contrary determination merely confirms that “ ‘the Judiciary has neither aptitude, facilities nor responsibility’ ” for making military or foreign affairs judgments. Hamdi, 542 U. S., at 585 (Thomas, J., dissenting) (quoting Chicago & Southern Air Lines, 333 U. S., at 111).

None of the smart ones talk about doing it themselves. They do talk about the fools that did so,and ended up going bankrupt because of it. You have to leave all of your options open in case you get into trouble.

I think we are talking about different contexts.

I'm almost certain we are.

I enjoy her ironic sense of humor.

I dare say most people that read her column regularly get the jokes.

At least not documented.

I cannot vouch for he source but these guys claim: "May 30, 1993: Term ‘Al-Qaeda’ First Mentioned in International Media"

May 30, 1993: Term ‘Al-Qaeda’ First Mentioned in International Media Edit event"

The term “al-Qaeda” is first mentioned in the international media. An article by the French wire service Agence France-Presse on this day entitled “Jordanian Militants Train in Afghanistan to Confront Regime” uses the term, although it is spelled “Al-Ka’ida.” The article quotes a Jordanian militant who says he has been “trained by Al-Ka’ida, a secret organization in Afghanistan that is financed by a wealthy Saudi businessman who owns a construction firm in Jeddah, Ossama ibn Laden.” (The spelling is the same in the original.) [Wright, 2006, pp. 410] The term will not be mentioned in the US until August 1996 (see August 14, 1996).

Might as well add this from the same source:

August 14, 1996: Term ‘Al-Qaeda’ First Mentioned in US Media Edit event

Based on a review of the Lexis-Nexus database, the term al-Qaeda is first mentioned in the mainstream media on this day. A United Press International article draws from a State Department fact sheet released today (see August 14, 1996) and states, “Earlier, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Usama Bin Ladin drew on his family’s wealth ‘plus donations received from sympathetic merchant families in the Gulf region’ to organize the Islamic Salvation Foundation, or al-Qaida. The group established recruitment centers in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan that enlisted and sheltered thousands of Arab recruits to fight the Soviets. ‘This network remains active,’ the State Department said.” (The spelling is the same as in the original.) [US Department of State, 8/14/1996; United Press International, 8/14/1996] The term was first used in an overseas article by the French wire service Agence France-Presse, in May 1993 (see May 30, 1993). The CIA has been aware of the term since at least the start of 1996 (see Shortly Before February 1996) and possibly by 1991, if not earlier (see February 1991- July 1992). However, the term will remain little used and little understood by the media for the next several years. For instance, the New York Times will first mention it two years later in quoting the courtroom testimony of one of the plotters of the 1998 African embassy bombings (see 10:35-10:39 a.m., August 7, 1998). It is referred to as “al-Qaeda, an international terrorist group, led by Mr. bin Laden.” [New York Times, 8/28/1998]

I think the majority of his supporters are more in the line of "starry-eyed dreamers",ready to follow any piper that pipes the "no more immigrants" tune.

Since that is the most important issue facing America today,it's easy to see the attraction.

Are you implying Trump supporters like him because he says what they want to hear?

I thought Trump was not a politician. :)

Again your link has quotes from 2002. So it is not prior to 911. You see why people have doubts. No one can ever dispel them. I have a doubt because I had never heard the word aL qaeda prior to 911. Then they start throwing out the term like it has always been used.

This has to be the most ridiculous claim from you on this site.

Do you think the government would be capable of lying about doing a deed like that. Do you think people in our government would be capable of lying about it. I'm not asking you if they are capable of pulling it off. We can talk about that another time.

The government is capable of lying. Yet they are not capable of keeping large scale deception secret.

Pulling it off? Only if the entire Military was complicit. Which means no.

Sure that's because Hezbollah and the PLO were visibly active in certain geographic locations since the 80s and 70s respectively.

AQ came on the scope after Khobar towers in 1996. They were mentioned as early as 1992 in defense planning guidance. You won't find that on the internet. Why? No body here in the States cared some obscure terrorist organisation was killing Embassy and military personnel overseas. Until 9/11 when everyone watched the attacks on TV.

Your line of reasoning is quite unreasonable. It is akin to saying "I never heard about it so it didn't happen."

Perhaps you should pick up one of the many books written on the history of AQ.

Here's one:

I'll keep looking for a link to the primary source (although I have no intention to pay for retrieve a link from the 90s) . The State Dept must've taken down the link years ago .

There are sources here:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_World_Trade_Center_ bombing

Here's an open source timeline of AQ attributed attacks.

-- Dec. 29, 1992

In the first al-Qaida attack against U.S. forces, operatives bomb a hotel where U.S. troops -- on their way to a humanitarian mission in Somalia -- had been staying. Two Austrian tourists are killed. Almost simultaneously, another group of al-Qaida operatives are caught at Aden airport, Yemen, as they prepare to launch rockets at U.S. military planes. U.S. troops quickly leave Aden.

--Feb. 26, 1993

The first World Trade Center attack and the first terrorist attack on America. A bomb built in nearby Jersey City is driven into an underground garage at the trade center and detonated, killing six and wounding 1,500. Yousef, nephew of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, masterminds the attack, working with nearly a dozen local Muslims. While U.S. officials disagree on whether Osama bin Laden instituted the attack and Yousef denies he has met bin Laden, the CIA later learns that Yousef stayed in a bin Laden-owned guest house in Pakistan both before and after the attacks.

--April – June 23, 1993

Militants plan a series of near simultaneous bombings in New York. Among the targets were prominent New York monuments: The Lincoln and Holland tunnels linking New York to New Jersey, the George Washington Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations, the last to be planted with the help of diplomats from the Sudanese mission, the Federal Building at 26 Federal Plaza, and finally, one in the Diamond District along 47th Street, populated by mostly Jewish diamond dealers. On June 23, as terrorists mix chemicals for the bombs, FBI agents raid their warehouse and arrest twelve.

-- May - July 28, 1993

After two months of planning, Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the World Trade Center bombing, travels to Karachi, the hometown of Benazir Bhutto, then former prime minister of Pakistan, who is seeking to regain her old job. He and two others are in the process of planting a remote control bomb on the road when the ageing Soviet detonator he obtained in Afghanistan explodes in his face, ending the plot. Financing for the bombing comes from radical Islamic groups in Pakistan, according to Bhutto.

-- June 1993

Al-Qaida reportedly attempts to assassinate then Jordanian Crown Prince Abdullah. He succeeded his father as king of Jordan in February, 1999.

--Oct. 3-4, 1993

In a battle for the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, a unit of U.S. special operations forces gets pinned down after two U.S. helicopters are shot out of the sky. Eighteen Americans die, killed by Somalis reportedly trained by al-Qaida. “It is true that my colleagues fought with [Somali warlord] Farah Adid’s forces in Somalia,” bin Laden subsequently claims. The al-Qaida leader also insists, with a characteristic exaggeration, that 100 Americans died in the attack, not 18. The attack leads to the U.S. withdrawal from Somalia, a move hailed by bin Laden as a great victory for the Islamic world.

--March 11, 1994

Led by Ramzi Yousef, a group of Islamic militants hijack a delivery truck in downtown Bangkok, strangle the driver and load a one-ton bomb on board. Their target: the Israeli embassy. But the truck has an accident and the hijacker abandons it, leading to the discovery of the bomb and driver’s body. Several of the plotters are arrested, but Yousef escapes again.

--June 1994

Imad Mugniyeh, the military chief of Hezbollah during its 1980’s attacks on U.S. personnel, meets secretly with Bin Laden in Khartoum. Mughniyeh, at that point the most wanted terrorist in the world for his role in the Beirut embassy and Marine Barracks bombing, advises Bin Laden on planning.

Ali Mohamed, the al-Qaida security director at the time, later tells U.S. officials that Mughniyeh told bin Laden how the Marine bombing in Beirut led to the U.S. withdrawal from Lebanon and how such a campaign could eventually lead to a similar route of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia and the whole Islamic world.

-- June 20, 1994

Ramzi Yousef, working with the People’s Mujahedin of Iran, blows up the Shrine of Reza, the great grandson of Mohammed and a Shiite saint, in Mashad, Iran. The explosion took out the entire wall of the mausoleum, killing 26 pilgrims, mostly women. At the time, Yousef was motivated as much by hatred of Shiite Muslims as by hatred of America. Also involved in the plot were his father and brother.

-- Nov. 12-14, 1994

Extremists working for bin Laden conduct extensive surveillance of President Bill Clinton and his party during a state visit to Manila in anticipation of mounting an assassination attempt when Clinton returns to the Philippine capital in November 1996 for an already scheduled APEC summit. Bin Laden orders al- Qaida to use still and video cameras to follow Clinton and Secret Service personnel. The Secret Service later learns from an al-Qaida defector that the surveillance was extensive, and the tapes along with maps and notes were sent to bin Laden, who was then living in Sudan. The Secret Service was unaware of the surveillance although there was some concern at the time that the president was exposed during the trip. “We did not know there was a plot to assassinate the president,” said a high-ranking Secret Service official. “We only found out later.”

--Dec. 8, 1994 - Jan. 5, 1995

Ramzi Yousef rents an apartment in the Dona Josefa apartment complex on Quirino Boulevard, in Manila, Philippines, believing that Pope John Paul II will take that route on his way to a huge outdoor mass planned for Jan. 15. The apartment is only 500 feet from the Manila home of the Vatican ambassador to the Philippines where the Pope will stay during his 5-day visit to the country. In addition, he rents a beach house to train his compatriots for the attack and purchases two Bibles, a crucifix, a large poster of the Pope, several priests’ garments — accurate down to the tunic buttons and confessional manuals. The plan, investigators said, was to place a bomb under a manhole cover along Quirino Boulevard. The attack is thwarted when bomb-making materials catch fire in the sink of the apartment kitchen. As it turns out, the pope travels to the Mass by helicopter.

-- Dec. 10, 1994

As part of the planning for the Day of Hate [see below] Yousef plants a crude bomb on board a Philippines Airlines plane from Cebu City, the Philippines, to Tokyo. When the bomb detonates, it kills one passenger, a Japanese businessman, and forces the plane, a 747, to land in Okinawa. Yousef calibrates the damage and increases the size of the bomb so it can take down an entire jumbo jet.

-- Jan. 21-22, 1995

In what would have been an attack with a higher death toll than the Sept. 11 attacks, bombs placed on board 11 jumbo jets are to be detonated by timing devices as the planes fly over the Pacific, killing an estimated 4,000 people. Most of the jets are to be American carriers and most of the dead would have been Americans. The bombs would have been timed to go off over a number of hours to heighten the terror. The plan, called the Day of Hate, was conceived by Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the first World Trade Center bombing and his uncle, Khalid Sheik Mohammed. Only a fire in Yousef’s Manila apartment on Jan. 6 thwarts it. Mohammed later modifies the plan and takes it to Osama bin Laden. That modified plan becomes the blueprint for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

--June 26, 1995

Less than an hour after Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak arrives in Addis Ababa to attend the Organization of African Unity summit, several members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a group working with al-Qaida, attack his motorcade. Ethiopian forces kill five of the attackers and capture three others. Ethiopia and Egypt charge the government of Sudan, where bin Laden is living, with complicity in the attack and harboring suspects. Privately, Egyptian officials tell U.S. intelligence they believe Bin Laden is behind the attack. Later, Egyptian officials learn that the terrorists had conducted surveillance of the last trip Mubarak had made to Ethiopia, just as they had with President Clinton.

-- Nov. 13, 1995

A truck bomb explodes outside the Saudi National Guard Communications Center in central Riyadh, killing five American servicemen and two Indian police. Four Saudi men, all self-described disciples of bin Laden, are quickly executed before the FBI can determine their ties to al-Qaida.

-- June 25, 1996

In an attack whose authorship is still debated by intelligence and law enforcement officials, a truck bomb is detonated at the Khobar Towers complex in Saudi Arabia, killing 19 American servicemen and wounding 400. Although an indictment in early 2001 pins blame on Shiite Muslims backed by Iran, many U.S. officials still believe bin Laden is responsible. Bin Laden himself states in a 1997 interview, “Only Americans were killed in the explosions. No Saudi suffered any injury. When I got the news about these blasts, I was very happy.”

--Aug. 8, 1998

Al-Qaida sends suicide bombers into the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Truck bombs kill more than 240 people, including 12 Americans at the Nairobi embassy. The attack results in the quick arrest of several of the bombers, but not the mastermind, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed. Also known as “Harun,” Mohammed is involved in later al-Qaida attacks.

--Jan. 1-3, 2000

U.S. and Jordanian authorities thwart attacks planned to coincide with the Millennium celebrations. In mid- December, Jordanian authorities arrest more than 20 al- Qaida operatives who are planning to bomb three locations where American tourists gather: Mt. Nebo, where Moses first saw the Promised Land; the Ramada Hotel in Amman, a stopover for tour groups; and the spot on the Jordan River where tradition holds John the Baptist baptized Christ. Later in the month, U.S. authorities seize Ahmed Ressam at a border crossing in Port Angeles, WA. He is carrying bomb-making equipment and later discusses his plan to blow up Los Angeles International Airport on New Year's Eve.

-- Jan. 13, 2000

The cross Africa Dakar-to-Cairo auto race is diverted after the U.S. intelligence community receives word of a planned ambush in the African nation of Niger. Word of the planned ambush was passed to race organizers over the weekend shortly after it was received, leading to a suspension of the race and a massive airlift on Thursday. Cargo planes were flying some 1,365 crew members and 336 vehicles as well as tons of equipment from Niamey, capital of Niger, to Sabha in southern Libya.

-- Oct. 12, 2000

A bomb on board a small Zodiac-like boat detonates near the USS Cole in the port of Aden in Yemen, killing 17 U.S. sailors and wounding scores more. The bombing also kills two al-Qaida operatives in the boat. The United States later learns the Cole was the second destroyer targeted by al-Qaida. The attack was originally planned for Jan. 3, 2000, when the USS The Sullivans was in the same port.

-- Sept. 9, 2001

Two Moroccan men, posing as television journalists, kill themselves and Ahmad Shah Massoud, leader of the Northern Alliance, at the alliance headquarters in the Panjshir Valley of Afghanistan. The killing of Massoud may have been the first part of the Sept. 11 attacks.

--Sept. 11, 2001

Three hijacked planes are flown into major U.S. landmarks, destroying New York's World Trade Center towers and plowing into the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane crashes in rural Pennsylvania, its target believed to have been the U.S. Capitol. At least 3,044 people are killed. The death toll is nearly 10 times greater than any other terrorist attack in history and makes bin Laden, for the first time, a household name in the United States and the west.

Did not meet him. When I served in the J34 program Mr. Waugh I believe was still in the CIA. Most of my contact with the Counter Terrorism operatives were SEALS and Delta who provided red team analysis for the AT-FP program. Some were "Army of Northern Virginia." A term I'm sure you are familiar with.

Back when he was originally working with Delta, they were called B-52.

Last i heard from the rumor mill a few years ago he is really and truly retired now. Since he is a Korean War vet that was a MSG in the mid-60's,he's definitely old enough to be retired.

Too bad you didn't get to talk with him. There are very few people alive with his experience running covert and intel ops.

Will download it. The CIA really needs him back full time. The numb-nuts from the CIA I encountered in Iraq were slimy, manipulative and in some cases stone cold dumb on the environment of the fight there.

I think I told you a story a couple of years back on how a two-man CIA team with interpreter tried to take over a US Army Infantry BN to do their dirty work. With the help of my ALO we exposed the ruse before some 05 had a chance to lose his oak leaf.
