World powers have agreed to seek a nationwide "cessation of hostilities" in Syria to begin in a week's time, after talks in Germany.

The halt will not apply to the battle against jihadist groups Islamic State (IS) and al-Nusra Front.

Ministers from the International Syria Support Group also agreed to accelerate and expand aid deliveries.

The announcement comes as the Syrian army, backed by Russian air strikes, advances in Aleppo province.

The move threatens to encircle tens of thousands of civilians in rebel-held parts of the major city of Aleppo.

US Secretary of State John Kerry admitted the ceasefire plan was "ambitious" and said the real test would be whether the parties honoured the commitments.

"What we have here are words on paper, what we need to see in the next few days are actions on the ground," he said.

A task force chaired by the US and Russia will work to implement the truce through consultations with Syria's warring factions.

Aid deliveries for besieged Syrian communities are due to begin as early as Friday.

Mr Kerry made the announcement alongside his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura.

Mr Lavrov said there were "reasons to hope we have done a great job today". An earlier proposal from Russia envisaged a truce starting on 1 March.

At the press conference Mr Kerry again suggested that Russian strikes were targeting what the West sees as moderate opposition forces, rather than terrorists, as Moscow says.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the cessation would only work if Russia halted its raids, although Mr Lavrov said they would continue.

The Support Group also agreed that peace talks involving the Syrian government and rebels should resume as soon as possible.

Initial talks were suspended just days after they began earlier this month in Geneva, in the wake of the Aleppo offensive.

Thousands of people displaced by the fighting have been stranded at the border with Turkey and aid agencies have warned of a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation.

A spokesman for the Syrian opposition, Salem al-Meslet, told the BBC "if we see action and implementation on the ground, we will be soon in Geneva".

Russian and Assad forces must be close to total victory. We GOTTA call a ceasefire before this can happen and stability ensues.

Of course we can't let Putin get the Kudos and the Peace Prize, but more than that Assad will be able to exact his revenge and we know arab revenge has unplumbed depths. Besides Trumpet wull be robbed of his victory or at least his talking points and a victory during a democrat presidency, it isn't to be contemplated

"The West" meaning islamic invaders that Obama supports. They are taking it on the chin and Obama (and Kerry)want to set up conditions where they will be unobstructed winners.

Not going to happen, you can't reward rebellion even if the US has a long history of supporting it when it suits them. This is difficult ground, there have been enough people still living in the government held parts of Syria to suggest it can't be all bad but no doubt the rebels have suffered. Syria has been devastated and you have to say what was the point? In fact with millions displaced and 250,000 dead, I wonder how was this war conducted in such a surgical manner? a few dissidents have reduced their country to rubble, they should be tried for crimes gainst humanity as, of course, should Assad.

Same was in the eastern Ukraine. When the insurgents started to win against Kiev troops, West pressured, begged for the Minsk ceasefire.

Once ceasefire is signed, it can be used in creative ways.

and again the Russians ,who have been pounding fighters and civilians alike in a free fire zone ,look like the magnamous good guys for ceasing hostilities. A week you say ? Should give them enough time to move right up to the Turkish border (where the refugees are swarming now ,and the Turkish Army is planted ).

The refugee population at Bab al-Salama UN camp inside Syria is expected to swell to 600,000 - 700,000 in the coming days .

Mercenaries on every side of the conflict . The emperor's position has again shifted and is taking the Russian /Iranian side calling the offensive a binary fight between the Islamic State and the Assad Regime ....a complete fiction.

So what happens when a US trained Sunni fighter looks to the sky and sees Russian planes attacking him and Iranian led Shia proxy forces from Lebanon shelling Sunni cities ? Well he quits the fight joins the refugees ;and remembers the betrayal by the West .

Yes there are many morons in this conflict. The rag rag few who though they could beat one of the largest aries in the ME, the US regime that sat on the sidelines and supported them, the turks who thought the conflict wouldn't spread to them, but Putin judged it well, he waited four years before helping out, now the moron think peace can be had with the stroke of a pen, ceasation of hostilities, only snipers allowed
