The debate on treatment of asylum seekers, read illegal immigrants if you live in the americas, has become hot after the High Court in Australia upheld the Australian offshore detention laws. We now have churches trying to impose a moral compass by invoking sanctuary, an ancient Biblical form of asylum, where a pursued person may claim sanctuary in a church.

This opens to way for a test case on constitutional law surrounding the separation of church and state. Do the laws of the land apply inside a church? interesting question. Can the church override the highest court in the land and prevent deportation of asylum seekers? Sanctuary in a church offers none of the creature comforts as might be found in an embassy, the other high profile sanctuary case that has been running in the UK.

It will be interesting to watch the howls of outrage from persons of all political persuasions but particularly from the left

Sanctuary, what does it mean in a modern age

It is a euphemism devised to confer blandness upon the process of admitting hoards of psychopathic undesirables in to attack and corrupt the basic sustaining culture of a nation.

It is a euphemism

to the contrary this is a form of civil disobedience where persons associated with a church have deciced to contest the law

Who decided this, you?

The term may have originally been applied to a harboring of people behind religious walls in an attempt to prevent their persecution. It does not mean that now in common usage. San Francisco is now considered a sanctuary city to many forms of pathology.

Rik I disagree with your point of view, this act is very specific in regard to a particular situation and one of the clergy involved has stated he will go to prison if necessary. Euphemism it is not. James I may have abolished the practicality of sanctuary in the English speaking world but there are some who look to a higher law. I respect the church's point of view whilst considering it an impracticable response since the secular authorities no longer respect the right of sanctuary
